I remember Nick McDonald, he was really good - I thought he'd do well as a pro, didn't he have had hands?maley1984 wrote:Got 2 cuz who boxed am one went pro the other didn't. There was a poster on here who'd seen Curtis Valentine box as an amateur and he said he'd scored some really big knockouts - he wasn't surprised at the Aston win.

not sure Wat happened with Mcdonald think he got in some trouble with the law. But he was a excellent am.palooka wrote:I remember Nick McDonald, he was really good - I thought he'd do well as a pro, didn't he have had hands?maley1984 wrote:Got 2 cuz who boxed am one went pro the other didn't. I think the the poster might have been damianhucker1 his local to valentine but I cud b wrong
Re: Pros that you faced as an amateur
As far as I know Valentine had somewhere in the region of 30 amateur bouts. 25 wins with 23 of those by way of knockout. I may got the figures a little wrong and I'll ask him next time I see him but those numbers are not far out.palooka wrote:I remember Nick McDonald, he was really good - I thought he'd do well as a pro, didn't he have had hands?maley1984 wrote:Got 2 cuz who boxed am one went pro the other didn't. Never, to my knowledge. But sparred with quite a few. One of my clubmates/ friends boxed Anyhony Joshua twice though.
Re: Pros that you faced as an amateur
Can't remember many names. Jamie McLevy I'm sure as a schoolboy. Mate of mine fought Craig McEwan as a senior am and Ricky Burns as a junior am. Probably more but they names stick out.
Re: Pros that you faced as an amateur
Micheal Lomax, Wayne Pinder, Jamie Moore, Danny Reynolds, Damien Brown, Anthony Hallett,

Re: Pros that you faced as an amateur
I boxed nigel Wright in the north east counties abas.He just boxed with my stable mate for England at Kulala lumpur. He was red hot I think he went on to win double aba championship. Mally Maciver from Yorkshire in the Yorkshire aba final. He won central area belt. The reverse to the question I boxed Frankie Gavin as a pro who was an outstanding amateur.
Re: Pros that you faced as an amateur
Nigel Wright was a good fighter, why did he retire? He seemed to hit hard with every punch and was very well balanced, he knew how to box alright.
Re: Pros that you faced as an amateur
Yeah very well schooled he seemed to glide in and out as an amateur very good foot work. He finished on medical grounds just before fighting for the British title

Me mates dad beat Kirkland laing and theres a bloke in my local that beat Glenn mcrory as a schoolboy, apparently his daughters got in touch with mcrory and he rang the bloke up on his 50th birthday to wish him well and had a chat which I thought was a nice touch

Re: Pros that you faced as an amateur
Yeah... He's very modest with his achievements bizarrely. I introduced a non-boxing person to him and mentioned the Benn and Watson win and he made a joke about me getting their names wrong. Great fighter, jacked it in youngstevedoc wrote:i only met him about 2 years back i was blown away speaking to him he said he went around 100 fights unbeaten .amazingreggaereggae wrote:Roy is modest and was a fantastic boxer toostevedoc wrote:I got talking to a guy Roy Connors and he boxed and beat Nigel Benn,Michael Watson and the Canadian superstar if the time Sean O Sullivan not a bad list hw lived on the same street as me when he was a kid
