Is Carl Froch English?
Is Carl Froch English?
He has recent Eastern European heritage so does this make him British rather than English as some would suggest?
Re: Is Carl Froch English?
Why do you care?
Re: Is Carl Froch English?
If Anthony Joshua can't be English (so say some) because of his Nigerian heritage then does the same ruling apply to Froch*?SNG wrote:Why do you care?
Personally, you are what you say you are, but apparently being English is an ethnicity with strict rules
* - Froch doesn't have Nigerian heritage
Re: Is Carl Froch English?
His name is Polish as he once explained. So you can say that he has a mixed ethnic heritage. However, I want to make it very clear that he definitely fought in front of eighty thousand on Wembley.
Re: Is Carl Froch English?
Personally I believe its personal. I've got Irish parents but would never claim to be Irish, I was born and raised here, I'd consider myself English, but I don't think it really matters. Anthony Joshua chose to fight out of and representing Britain, but can't he represent both parts of his life? I do wonder a little about guys like Joshua and Chisora, Lewis too, as it could easily be business decision, but I don't really care what they say or think they are, I just like watching them fight, their nationality or personal identity is an irellevance to me.Taansend wrote:If Anthony Joshua can't be English (so say some) because of his Nigerian heritage then does the same ruling apply to Froch*?SNG wrote:Why do you care?

My mum is from Cork & my dad's mum was a Paddy Traveller so I guess I'm not English either - although I was born in Plumstead. So I am definitely a Plum.SNG wrote:Personally I believe its personal. I just wanted to see if the same people that say Joshua isn't English feel the same about Froch but they've been evading the question. Not sure why

Re: Is Carl Froch English?
His surname is actually German as he says so in his book, he however is English as he was born and raised in Nottingham.
It's like me with an Irish surname, I was born and raised in England and hence English.

We are just one step away from the philosophically challenging threads entitled "Is English Eubank English?" and "Is English Eubank English Eubank?"
Re: Is Carl Froch English?
He is king of Wembley and a citizen of the world
Re: Is Carl Froch English?
I believe he had a grand dad that was Polish which is different to having both parents from abroad.. Common sense.

Re: Is Carl Froch English?
Froch is not full Polish, part Polish and part English. Whereas genetically Joshua is 100% African.
As on the previous thread the issue of nationality, identity etc is complex.
For example: Mikkel Kessler's mum is English, which makes him generically more English than Joshua.... However he has always lived in Denmark and fights under the Danish flag....
The point is - it's a very difficult and imprecise, and to a large extent personal concept. Especially in this age of migration and easy travel. All of my close married friends and family have married someone of a different or partially different nationality / background. Things are getting more complicated and harder to pigeonhole.

He should have a statue of him landing THAT right hand on George Groves chin infront of 80,000 people at Wembley stadium erected on the white cliffs of Dover to ward off any potential invadersBoxerbeetle wrote:He's an international superstar.clopixolacuphase wrote:He is king of Wembley and a citizen of the world

Eff a statue, a looped clip of the knockout punch should be projected onto the face of the white cliffs of Dover at all times.Stuarty30 wrote:He should have a statue of him landing THAT right hand on George Groves chin infront of 80,000 people at Wembley stadium erected on the white cliffs of Dover to ward off any potential invadersBoxerbeetle wrote:He's an international superstar.clopixolacuphase wrote:He is king of Wembley and a citizen of the world

Re: Is Carl Froch English?
he is English because he claims to be English, but no doubt he is of polish blood like he says from his heritage, which he is proud of . like calzaghe is welsh of a Italian heritage , same as aj he is a Nigerian from irish heritage
. you are who you are .who ever brings you up ,be it a city, parents ,child home , boys home , christian brothers, unless a promoter says otherwise.
Re: Is Carl Froch English?
Carl's mum is a Geordie who moved down with parents, probably due to the mining.
His dad was born and raised in Nottingham.
His grandparents on his dad's side were polish and Geordies on his mum's side.

Re: Is Carl Froch English?
Simplistically :
Froch is 75% English, born and raised in England.
Anthony Joshua 100% Nigerian. 100% born in England. 50% raised in England.
Froch = English
Joshua = adopted Britsh. Clearly Nigerian.
Calzaghe?
Chisora?
Greg Rusedski?

We live in a land, latterly nation, that has been a destination for invaders, colonists and immigrants for more than 2 millennia.
Just because some of the more recent arrivals are sporting a slighter darker shade of skin doesn't make them any more or less English than Normans, Vikings or Celts.
Maybe an 'ethnically English' race did exist once upon a time, but in the year 2016 we English are a smorgasbord of ethnicities and cultural influences.
In the age of multiculturalism and constantly shifting populations it's not unusual to find people who identify with multiple nationalities, cultures and/or ethnicities.
