Maybe welterweight his first years of competition, but not after. Its hard to compare different times on an even playing field, but if GGG had to fight 3 times a month instead of 3 a year, with lighter gloves and only a few days, week, or 2 weeks inbetween bouts, I doubt if he would have been undefeated. Very few boxers today would have withstood the grind and wear and tear on their body. Greb did it for 13 years, and fought injured many times.boxing_rocks wrote:Achievement wise, probably, but there is no way he could beat Golovkin. Greb is the only boxer to beat Tunney, and Tunney was a light heavy. I read he fought the latter part of his career with only vision in one eye. He is the best middle of all time easily, imo.

This is why it is practically impossible to compare eras. Does anyone seriously think Ali or Marciano or Tyson would beat the 6'9" Fury or Wilder? They would be way too small and with todays advanced training methods etc they would have next to no chance.
You can't accurately judge a middleweight from over 50 years ago with one from today. Golovkin would absolutely obliterate Greb.

so make a more accurate comparison: would Marciano at, i think 185lbs, that'd be a light heavyweight at most nowadays, would he beat Stevenson?
Re: GGG Damaged Goods
Ali beat 6'6" Ernie Terrell. Dempsey beat 6'7" Jess Willard, who was about 70lbs heavier and 6" taller. Max Baer beat Primo Carnera, who was about 6'7" and about 270. Pretty much everyone Tyson fought was taller than him, and probably most outweighed him.
Sure it can happen. Marciano, Dempsey, and Patterson were small heavys, and would have been light heavys or cruisers today. They would have been competitive, for sure.
To me it is a two way street comparing guys from now to back then. Bring the guys from yesteryear to now and they would probably be outclassed due to better technique, nutrition, etc. Now, take todays guys and throw them back in time, and doubt most would have the mental toughness to get through it. Get hammered on with 4-6oz horsehair gloves for 10 or 15 rounds and have to fight next week? No air conditioning, no gatorade, no peds! Forget it.

Tyson Fury wouldn't land a punch on Ali. It's comedic how people think a 6'3 210 pound man in great shape is puny. Marciano would blast Stevenson and Fury.Counter-puncher wrote:Ian1973 wrote: Does anyone seriously think Ali or Marciano or Tyson would beat the 6'9" Fury or Wilder? You can't compare Fury who is a good boxer with quite a few drawbacks with the ATG from 1970s, but I am sure he would beat anybody from 1920s.

It makes me laugh when we hear so much about these 'advanced training methods' and yet modern heavyweights are blowing our of their arses after only 30 seconds of sustained effort, whereas the guys in the 1970's could fight at a hectic pace for 15 rounds.
If these modern training methods are so advanced, why are the modern heavyweights such poor athletes in general?

The bigger you are, the worse your conditioning is with the same training.jamesmcdonnell wrote:It makes me laugh when we hear so much about these 'advanced training methods' and yet modern heavyweights are blowing our of their arses after only 30 seconds of sustained effort, whereas the guys in the 1970's could fight at a hectic pace for 15 rounds.

I did. I also noticed Ali being floored by Cooper who despite the adoration of the British public was never world class.
Fury in the fights you mentioned was a work in progress he isn't anymore.
