How boxers make a living???

Post by bigman1968 »

We are in Sept 2016

Stivern didn't fight this year and not scheduled to
Jennings the same
Scott the same
Ustinov

And they didn't earn too much in previous years also.

So what are they living from, grown men with families (I presume)??? :brick:

In Japan only the top guys can make a living from boxing alone.

Everyone else has day jobs.

• Non-big name fighters still have jobs, such as (until recently) a world champion like Ricky Burns worked at a sports shop
• Being supported financially by close friends and family members
• Social security benefits
• Working as sporting pundits for the media
• Brand sponsorship/advertising
• Social media/personal websites
• Living off savings
• Receiving funds from investments
• Assisting other fighters with training, management and promoting duties
• Public speaking, such as speeches at private dinner functions
• Typical celebrity duties, such as being paid to attend public events

A slightly interesting fact, I once attended night clubs on separate nights where Nigel Benn and Frank Bruno were DJ’s.

Also, Evander Holyfield performed a speech at a private dinner function at a venue that was about a mile from my house. I know for certain that Ricky Hatton is pretty good at this.

Stiverne and Jennings have earned over/close to a million in their careers , Malik Scott surely has had some good pay days himself.

Another reason why there should one governing Boxing Commission to oversea the sport. Not only to protect the boxers from these blood hungry promoters but I'd really like to see these fighters have some sort of retirement fund or aftercare programs to assist fighters when they hang up the gloves. Every other sport has it but not in Boxing. Sad.

I know the California athletic commission offered some sort retirement plan if you fight in California 10 times not sure what it is but the commission said I need to fight there 3 more times to get it

They tried it in the UK with the professional boxers association, from what I recall, nobody wanted to sign up to it.

boxers would have even less money than they have now if there was just one org, remember its only the fans that benefit from having one org, the boxers have never had it so good, more titles and orgs means that the sport survives

And especially medical coverage. Severely injured boxers, even a headliner like Mago Abdusalamov, have to live on charity!

The Mago situation is disgusting, the blokes a virtual cabbage stuck in America in a dingy flat with a wife and 3 kids, I would of expected the klitchkos to help out seeing as it was their promotion and just to show a bit of solidarity

The entire sport would benefit though, and the money flowing into it would increase if there was a central authority. In the end, everybody would be better off.

just cant see it mate, after all didn't work first time round did it ? the sport been operating with multiple belts far longer than without and logistically it would be a nightmare to sort, boxing wouldn't be as global as it is without the extra belts and weight divisions IMO although it is a nice idea

Well, football is pretty global, and it has a single organisation.

What do you mean first time around? There's never been an overriding organisation running boxing.

I know but the amount of world title fights on tv would drop dramatically and depending on which country your from you could be without a flag bearer for years, just meant that boxing soon cottoned on that titles meant money and what was once THE world title became A world title

on reflection I suppose the domestic scene and a boxers climb up the world rankings could be made into bigger events

Yes, we wouldn't have the situation we have now, where it's only the upper echelons or most hyped fighters who make a decent living.

Domestic title fights used to be HUGE events in the UK, drawing massive crowds, and getting wall to wall newspaper coverage. The more diluted the titles, the less meaningful it becomes to be a champion, and a lot of the belt holders are making chickenfeed relatively speaking. Prestige carries far more money.

Look at golf, even minor players are millionnaires, because the sport is so huge worldwide, with absolutely humungous sponsorship.

think your biggest problem would be making sure the one sole org wouldnt be broken up again, greed has always steered this boxing ship but heres to hoping :TU:

Less than 1% of boxers earn enough to just box.
Average male earns less than $20,000 a year
