Regardless of the injury, and in my opinion that was caused by the punching strength of Golovkin, Brook was being pushed back, with tripe G being able to walk forward and dictate the fight. Yes, Kell had some successes. He found angles that maybe Golovkin hadn't had to deal with before. He backed up Golovkin at times and put some nice combinations together, but overall, Golovkin was walking towards him the whole time, slowly cutting off the ring as the rounds went by. In a similar vein to Khan vs Canelo, Khan's best work came in the early rounds when he was fresh. That's to be expected and it was the case with Kell. After all, he is a world champion, a fit and strong fighter with some skills, so i wasn't expecting him to roll over after a few rounds. As the rounds went on, Kell went from a fighter who looked strong and game, to one that was realising the effect of Golovkin's power and strength. He started to retreat and was getting caught a lot, no doubt aided by a concern for his eye and the double vision he was apparently getting from round two.
I think if the fight had gone on, Kell would have been worn down and stopped. He was taking a lot of shots through out the fight and the cumulative affect of those punches wold have told as the fight went on. Weighing the same as another fighter, is not the same as being as strong or as powerful. In the end, the strength and power of Golovkin was the deciding factor. For someone to give Triple G a competitive fight, you have to have a fighter who is a natural middleweight, with skills and speed, but also enough power to make Golovkin respect his opponents power. Golovkin measured Brooks power very early on and decided he didn't really have any, so decided to walk forward throwing bombs. There was no real respect or concern for whatever power Brook had, meaning triple G didn't stand off and consequently there was little room for Brook to move about the ring. Brook will be a force at 154lbs i think, but this time, reality smashed the dream, which was always going to be a long shot, regardless of the eventual eye injury that forced the stoppage.
On a final note, i do think this fight happened because of an issue that seems to be apparent in modern day boxing. No one is fighting the people they should be fighting. It seems that promoters want an alphabet title. Then to defend that title against inferior opponents, until the figures are large enough to compensate for any loss of a title against any truly world class fighters. So in this instance, Khan should not be fighting Canelo, he should be fighting Brook and Golovkin shouldn't be fighting Brook, he should be fighting Canelo, but these obvious match ups aren't made. So boxing politics comes to the fore and the result of that is miss matches taking place, that are hyped by the tv companies as being mega fighting events. The boxing public aren't stupid and with what happened last night and with the Khan Vs Canelo fight, the public's appetite for these kinds of fights have been almost saturated. Yes the sport is about money, but that ultimately comes from giving the paying public realistic fights they actually want to see.
