Its a shame he ended up with the Ingles

He had amazing reflexes, good ring intelligence, great speed, great power, very fast feet and hands etc. If he'd been trained in a conventional way he would have been an exceptional fighter and achieved much much more.

Good point. At top level there isn't too much to fall back on when things go wrong.

Although very fit and physically strong many fighters can be on a tightrope mentally.

They have to believe that they are the best but when they get beat they cannot compute and fall apart

:OhYes: the fat lads probbly tucking into a brick lane curry house right now since the 02 has no inside catering. I cam picture naz now leaning over the table to stuff his mouth with a nan dripping with ghee and butter and enjoying it.....what a man what a fighter bless him he entertained us and lets not forget the wild excitement he bought to british boxing......

Benn, eubanks had cleared the way but imagine Naz emerging in a 1987 on the bbc with harry catpenter

Tuan_Jim wrote:It was indeed a wide decision. If the young, fresh Hamed was a "shell" when Barrera beat him, God only knows what sort of pulse Kelley, Boom boom et al had. I like fighters like Mike Tyson, who romp through the champs all at once - not these conniving sorts who sit on a B-class title, milk it at home and wait for a champ to reach a certain age, or scrape through a defence. For how many years was J.M. Marquez Hamed's mandatory? An unusual and entertaining talent, but the jingos do seem to put him on too high a pedestal.
:TU: spot on.hamed was not shot at 26/27 just poorly prepared.
Vasquez is a legend only in puerto rico not in the true legend sense.tom Johnson yes he reigned 5 years .....but it goes back to my point ...the fw division between 1991-1995 was very weak so good b level champs like johnson, vasquez even robinson could set up camp without fighting each other.

If hamed had fought Barrera in 95 i think hamed would have won too

A shame that he lived on the doorstep of probably Britain's most successful gym and that a man who has been recognised as one of the world's top trainers took him under his wing from the age of 7?

I'm not sure but he lost to Freddie Norwood in 99 and didn't really box anyone until beating Manuel Medina in 03 (7 years after Naz knocked him out).

Very well said.

JMM was not the fighter he would grow into.

He had his night vs Pacquiao and the rest is history, he'd prove himself over and over.

But when Naz was champ JMM was a bit of a timid, albeit unerringly accurate, counter puncher.

But God wouldn't a decision over any version of Marquez look lovely on Hamed's record?

If I recall Marquez had Norwood on the floor in that fight? Also, HBO thought JMM won.

Yeah.

Just my opinion. And it's hard to visualize him as a conventional fighter.Almost like trying to imagine Juan Manuel Marquez as an Ingle fighter.

Does anyone know how much money he made?

Must be living off the interest as I'm not sure he works? Does he have a business now?

He made about £30 million in boxing but what naz did as soon as he became world champ was to start buying up property left right and centre up north.im sure his brothers helped him but with the way house prices have increased in that time ,and with mass EE migration equalling ready made tenants..... naz has made huge sums of easy clean money since he retired. His,stable family life, family values and investments on property make him a huge success out of the ring. He will likely double his inring earnings in retirement..........despite not earning a penny in endorsements...

Undoubtedly the spell in prison and his religiousity after he retired stop him getting endorsements........ and have kept his profile very quiet since he retired........again he prefers it that way apart from when a world champion Sheffield fighter or Amir khan has a big fight he comes out.........amazing now i think of it....when u consider how huge naz was here and in mainstream USA and the middle east during his championship years............probably he doesnt do all the celebrity reality show crap or public charity work for all his ebullience as a boxer....naz is leading the perfect life............ good on the lad.

Probably one of the most over rated British fighter of my life time.
Sure he was very talented, and had a huge punch; but so much is over looked nowadays.
He fought well past their best, or smaller guys in all his best performances ... The Robinson fight is often credited as his best ever performance, but Robinson was in big decline by then, and Kevin Kelly almost did the trick, and he too was about 5yrs past his best.
Lots forget that Barerra was also regarded as past it then too, and was chosen to whet the appetite for Naz to fight Eric Morales who was the big fish back then.

I always find it amusing when people slag him off for being fat, letting himself go etc

I've never heard it from anyone who had a quarter of the athleticism or athletic ability as Naz had in his prime. Why not be fat? He always looks extremely happy.

Robinson had won his previous 8 - the best winning run of his entire career and these were all world title wins!
Kelly had not even boxed for a world title 5 years before!

Oh, definitely. That's a first ballot hall of faker right there.

JMM's featherweight defeats are both controversial, though I just think he was too timid, overthought both fights.

Whereas Vazquez will get in - on the strength of titles in 3 weights, a comfortable points win over Canizales and one of the most spectacular featherweight KOs ever, vs Rojas - but has been overlooked a few years now.

Kelley had just KO'd Derrick Gainer in a remarkable fight on HBO's boxing after dark to EARN the Naz fight. He was back.

After losing to Naz and Morales he'd rebound up in weight with a thrilling 12 round win over Humberto Soto, future lightweight title holder.

Kelley is one of the most exciting feather weights of all time, before he won a title - the Great War with Troy Dorsey -during his title run - winning the war with Goyo Vargas and losing the war with Alejandro Gonzalez - and he was still a talented warrior afterward, the come from behind KOs of Ricardo Rivera and Gainer...

Yeah why not Im sure his heart is in better health than most of us with that 20 years of elite level aerobic performance....

I guess Naz is both a comfortable northerner and also arab....in both areas weight is more readily accepted as normal than the celebrity obsessed south east and London.......

Naz enjoys the richness and variety of Yemeni cooking and why not! :OhYes:

Naz would be great on one of these great british bake up type programmes....Id like him to have his own show like Floyd in that old school vein where he travels around the world and in his personable warm style cooks on the street.......it would be great!

really?

A Libyan mate told me Arab people were more trim and that when you're on the hunt, back there, you don't have to go looking for a thin one, only a good looking one. Unlike over here.
