We must have about the least offensive national anthem in the world. It celebrates the freedom of the people and the beauty of the country.

When you open a text window to create a post, at the top of the window there are some symbols in boxes. One of them is Img, which stands for image.australiahere wrote:how do you put pictures up ??
Click on Img and 2 sets of brackets appear in your text box. You need to insert the image properties in between the two sets of brackets.

Re: Mundine calls for boycott of anthem
I see your point and agree about the original version but it's been changed and the brittania/English references removed so I can't see why aboriginals would be offended. as for the majority of posters here when it comes to Mundine yes they are blinded by their opinion of him.p4p1 wrote:No Mundine wants it changed to something that has no history of British/white supremacy. The fact they edited the song doesn't change its origin or original message. Why would you want our national anthem to be associated with that kind of song? Unless of course you agree with it. If you can't at the very least see where he is coming from then I expect it's the latter.bogan whisperer wrote:So Mundine is asking for something to be changed that has already been changed?p4p1 wrote: Yes but the original version does, that's the point he is making. I don't often agree with him but here he has a point. Just because we now use an edited version of the song does not mean it should be used. If you can't see his point of view you're obviously blinded by your opinion of him or you see no problem with white/British supremacy in Australia.

Re: Mundine calls for boycott of anthem
Time we took a closer look at what Mundine is whinging about :
Verse 1
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Verse 2
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
That is the current and official Australian National Anthem, Advance Australia Fair, in its entirety.
There is nothing there that could offend anyone.

Re: Mundine calls for boycott of anthem
The point that he is making and it is a completely fair song is that the full version which is very easy to find, is certainly offensive and laced with either obvious or thinly veiled white/British supremely connotations. I really though oh no he's being a pudendum again, then I read the interview, after that I googled and I was appalled that advance Australia fair is our national anthem. Regardless of how the edited version doesn't make any of these references it's still a fact that original text is offensive, regardless of it being edited it is still from the same bigoted writer, written during the same oppressive times. It's a shame more of Australia can't see his valid point of view due to their opinion on him.
This is the full version.
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"
When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
"Brittannia rules the wave!"
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle,
Who come our lot to share,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
Should foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand;
Brittannia then shall surely know,
Beyond wide ocean's roll,
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep a British soul.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"
Now it's certainly not the most racist thing ever written but it's easy to see why the full version is in bad taste to our aboriginals and to a lesser degree Australians with no British background who them theirselves or their families have played a great part in making Australia a far greater country than the British likely ever envisioned. Its not hard to see why there may be a problem there unless you want to close your eyes and pretend that although we are not to blame(and this is always my big issue with a lot of movements against a white majority) references/edits/takes from a song that celebrates what Australia's first settlers did and their origin is not a good look.

The current and official version only has two verses and there is not a single thing in it that could offend anyone.
Here it is again, our official Australian National Anthem in its entirity :
Verse 1
Australians all let us rejoice,

We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts

Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
That is what Mundine was trying to entice people to sit down during the playing of at the two football finals at the weekend.

Re: Mundine calls for boycott of anthem
What p4p#1 is trying to say is the version that it was derived from is offensive to Aboriginals. Not that I personally agree because I doubt most people would know the original version. Here it is.Like a Boss wrote:Time we took a closer look at what Mundine is whinging about :

Not sure what anybody would like to have changed there? It is a celebration of the people and the beauty of the country.
The 'girt by sea' thing is about the only thing that anyone ever seems to complain about.

Re: Mundine calls for boycott of anthem
This is a bit ridiculous. Yes, the original song/poem has references to British rule/superiority (if you like). It was of course a pro-british jingle. If you really want to derive offense out of it, then go on.
However, the edited version, the version from which we sing/recite as our anthem - is not. Our anthem is not racist and to pull out the original version (which yes, 99% of aussies probably didn't know existed) is really pulling at straws and simply only trying to cause a ruckus for the sake of it.
Fukking sick of people crying racism over everything and anything for nothing. Only thing that's worse is white people being offended for the minorities.
Anthony, if we pulled a traditional, native, aboriginal song for our anthem - from which tribe do we take it from so as not to offend the ancestors of the other forgotten tribes??
All that without pulling the "you're a half-cast anyway" statement, YES!..........Wait, whoops....

There isn't a more inoffensive national anthem on the planet.
Nothing in there for Racists, Monarchists or God Botherers. It does what it's meant to do "Unite Us"
Wonder if Mundine is speaking as an Aboriginal or do his allegiances lie with his concocted Islamic faith ?
I watched it. None sat down.

I was born in Australia.
I don't understand why it's so hard for people to understand where some indigenous people are coming from. Perhaps, it'a like I said, white privilege. Mundine is a bit of a tool no doubt, but you guys all keep focusing on the lyrics of the anthem. It's not about that for some native blokes, it's about what it represents and reminds them of. You all think cause it's 2016 that everything is all hunky dory and everyone should "get over it & move on". That there is where the problems arise. You grew up facing no discrimination even close to what they have and continue to. I guarantee most of you would have a hissy fit and scream bloody murder if they did one day change the date of Australia Day too.

Re: Mundine calls for boycott of anthem
Our government ran a nationwide survey to determine what the people wanted sung as our nation anthem.
60,000 people were polled nationally on it and "Advance Australia Fair" was what they chose.
Our population is now 23,000,000 and one person, best known because he is a loud mouth, calls for the national anthem to be changed.
