not sure.

I forgot all about Markussen. That would be a pretty good fight.

I dont see a Markussen fight happen, he will "price" himself out of the fight like he has done the two other times that fight was surposed to happen.

just been reading one of the online papers. calzaghe quoted as saying 'i've been trying to unify for years, it'd be hard to give up on'

i can see exactly where he's coming from. anyone think he'd want to give up the belt he's had for 9 years AND the one he's just added? there's some unfinished business at 168, what with Kessler and Beyer.

Kessler was in Manchester, what are they waiting for? Showtime were interested in showcasing Kessler vs WILLIAM JOPPY... i'm sure they'd approve of Calzaghe-Kessler since they aired those excellent cruiserweight unification fights.

(btw, Rawling says Warren has ruled out Clinton Woods &, uh, Carl Froch)

Kessler actually going to Manchester to see the fight is basically him saying that he is interested in fighting the winner. Neither would want to give up home advantage though so I can't see it happening. Although Kessler did go to OZ! The question remains though, will Kessler still fancy Calzaghe after watching him destroy Lacy? I doubt it!!

The Beyer fight will never be made either IMO.!

I think kessler is prepared to travel if the bread is right. he went over to Oz with a bad back and poor prep for the very dificult Mundine. kessler strikes me as a guy who wants the big fights and the big money. imo, Calzaghe's win over a US approved name will make a lot of ppl eager to fight him. Kessler's jab is so good and his technique is so sharp I believe he has faith in his own ability. this fight would rock

much more interesting than Jones or Tarver, who can stink the joint out WITHOUT farting

ps, i like the way Bute is coming along. the way he bashed up Kabary Salem...

Terence wrote:I think we need to bear in mind that Joe is highly unlikely to fight more than once more this year and also that Tarver is unlikely to fight again this year after he takes on Hopkins. Plus factor in that Joe is tied to Showtime. I see him maybe taking a mandatory fight this year and seeing what happens next year.

I do think that Taylor will KO Wright late-on and think that Taylor-Calzaghe is a natural fight as Jermain is a big middleweight but it is never going to happen. Best we can hope for this year is Calzaghe-Kessler but again that won't happen. Possibly a coming home to Wales fight against a relatively easy opponent? Likelyhood is that Joe will have those three fights over the next 20 months then retire so he has to get the right opponents to make a push for great status as he does not have it just yet, only the opportunity to get it.
if he sits waiting he has to face his mandatories. they can get in his way, especially if he wants to stay at s/m. you're right - Tarver, Woods, Glen Johnson are quite busy. Kessler and Beyer have nothing scheduled. Joe should have a nice layof then make his move.

i'd love to see him JC fully unified s/m champion. There isn't a fighter i the world that would give Calzaghe a better fight than Kessler.

I agree, i have been a fan of Kessler for a while now, of course after Calzaghe's rousing win over Lacy i will have to rethink my claim that Kessler will turn out to be the best of the SM champions :D Calzaghe set a high standard on Saturday. Still if anyone else at SM can give Calzaghe a good fight it's Kessler, he is strong, has an excellent jab and gets stronger as fights progress, that was when he came into his own to stop Lucas and he came on strong to take the decision off Mundine in Australia.

Shame they didn't interview Kessler at the arena on Saturday, he speaks good english and they interviewed that idiot Lily Savage a while back at a a Khan fight so why not fish out Kessler for a quick word? Ask him what is immediate plans were. One would imagine he was there to make a fight with the winner. As for Beyer you may as well rule him out of the mix, he is content to stay in Germany and fight mandatories and voluntary unworthies until he retires and the next German takes over the WBC belt.

Just read he would rather fight Roy Jones than Antonio Tarver.

Damn - gutted about that, but given his history of opponents not entirely surprised.

Kessler.

Who he fights thereafter is less relevant to me.

If his next fight isn't Kessler or Beyer, I'm going to assume a lot of people are going to come down from that high after the win over Lacy.

Here is the quote, not sure of the source - just a email contact said he found it on the net... and he's usually reliable.

Its what Joe says about Tarver and Jones is alarming... he admits Tarver is the main man, but says he would rather fight Jones.

"I'll think about my options, but if I could get the likes of Antonio Tarver or Roy Jones Jr in the States and the money is right I'd go for it.

"Tarver's the main man at the moment, but he's not exciting. Roy Jones is more of a legend and would probably be my choice."

I'm sorry but RJJ is not the fight to cement a legacy. The guy has lost 3 in a row in less than average fights, and isn't getting any younger. He's just looking to add a big name to his resume, and I think he's falling back to where he was before Lacy. I don't like that fight at all.

I've been thinking about this fight a lot since Saturday. Kessler has all the skills you say, and comes to fight... but I think the first couple rounds would be crucial. I actually envisaged Calzaghe starting at a blazing pace, and blowing the Dane away before the halfway mark. Mikkel comes to fight... but at a certain level. If he can get his jab going in the face of a blistering, bamboozling... erm... assault really... then it could very much be game on, but I don't know. The past couple days I've had doubts I never had before (had thought this would be a really intruiging contest... which I suppose it still might be).

One question – if you were Calzaghe would you rather take on Kessler or RJJ?

The Kessler fight has no US appeal at all beyond hardcore boxing fans. The Jones fight has mainstream appeal. Is that right? No of course not, but that is a fact.

Think Joe and Warren are making a big mistake if they try for Roy Jones. They should be capitalising on his win, making up for lost time:
not back tracking with a pointless match against the shot to hell and back Roy Jones.

Warren says it's a marquee match against a superstar - but no one outside the world of boxing knows who Jones is. And the people who do know who Jones is, the boxing fans, also know he is all washed up.

JC will look bad going after this fight - it's 3 years too late and the press and fans will see this for the cynical mismatch it is.

C'mon Frank, don't f*** it up now - let's see Calzaghe in with a live one.

we want Kessler! would we want to see Joe run after a couple of stale reluctant light heavies, or have him fight Kessler, who could give him a great fight. Kessler is brilliant and his cool skills will be a perfect foil to Joe's fire. make up a poll and send it to JC's site

Surely they could sell a Calzaghe v Kessler fight over here at least. They could get a fornicating humungous live gate for that fight in Wales, and British TV would pick it up. The problem of course is getting Showtime involved.

I have no interest in him fighting Jones, Jones is shot to pieces and I honestly believe Calzaghe would spark him out. look how poor he was against Johnson, Calzaghe would have knocked the fuckries out of him if he fought like that.

I am very happy that Joe has won, seriously. I like his style and I have been always thinking that he can reach more.

He should destroy the "LHW paper heroes" like Woods, Johnson, RJJ or Tarver to end all these stupid discussions about who is best in LHW.

In Super Middle the one who will follow Joe is Jürgen Brähmer, provided he won´t have any conflicts with the law....... He will fight for a title this year. His first target is Beyer who will do anything to prevent this fight.....

Screw LH, Joe can achieve more by sticking at SM and racking up three more wins against quality opposition.

Clear up SM, and then have one try and LH like Bernard is doing.

If Joe fights Jones, it's a waste on a par with Toney taking on Holyfield. Remember all those great fights Toney could have had at cruiser - Jirov II, Mormeck, Bell, Koncrete Kelvin, Expanding Man Jones, Cunningham and Cora. What does he do? wrecks an old shot HOFer, and then flounders. it's now three years after the Jirov win, and now he may get another belt...

Now, Calzaghe has been making super middle all this time. Hell, I can remember him beating down Delaney on the old Big Fight Live, back in the days when Adrian Dodson was hot shit! Because he has been, he still can make 168. Joe can attract big fights now, his name is hot.

SN and Joe are very conservative. They won't want to give up that old WBO and new IBF title, surely. What if he moves up to 175, suffers an injury and flounders without a title? Wood can't fit him in yet, Tarver may price himself out, etc.

as i said before, Showtime want to showcase Kessler, vs W Joppy. If they could even dream of putting him in vs a guy who Jermain Taylor got stick for fighting, the paymasters can make the effort for a WBO/IBF and WBA unification

i'm gonna write this for my next column on BS. imo as many of us as poss should try and get the message across.

BINGO! He has plenty of fights left for him at SMW, seeing as there are not only 2 other title holders, but many young faces that are willing to make a statement. If he took a money fight, or a "legend" type fight against another huge name at a different weight class (IE: Hopkins), and got out of the game after that, I'd be fine with it. But for him to take a obviously shot RJJ, and expect it to further cement his legacy in history, is a dumb managerial move.

BIG - so
Hits harder than Joe - so did Lacy
Skilled - not as much as Calazage/Tarver/RJJ

Adamek is currently unproven

Adamek proved a lot in his gut check vs the very tough world class Briggs. an dhe looked excellent breaking down the classy Ulrich. If Joe cleans out the s/m champs, when he moves up to 175 Adamek will be the man to beat imo. i just wonder what the fornicate king is doing letting him waste away.
