not sure.Freiheit wrote:Does anybody know when his mandatory defenses are due? (Stieglitz (IBF) and Markussen (WBO))
I forgot all about Markussen. That would be a pretty good fight.
I think kessler is prepared to travel if the bread is right. he went over to Oz with a bad back and poor prep for the very dificult Mundine. kessler strikes me as a guy who wants the big fights and the big money. imo, Calzaghe's win over a US approved name will make a lot of ppl eager to fight him. Kessler's jab is so good and his technique is so sharp I believe he has faith in his own ability. this fight would rocknumpty wrote:Kessler actually going to Manchester to see the fight is basically him saying that he is interested in fighting the winner. Neither would want to give up home advantage though so I can't see it happening. Although Kessler did go to OZ! The question remains though, will Kessler still fancy Calzaghe after watching him destroy Lacy? I doubt it!!
The Beyer fight will never be made either IMO.!
if he sits waiting he has to face his mandatories. they can get in his way, especially if he wants to stay at s/m. you're right - Tarver, Woods, Glen Johnson are quite busy. Kessler and Beyer have nothing scheduled. Joe should have a nice layof then make his move.Terence wrote:I think we need to bear in mind that Joe is highly unlikely to fight more than once more this year and also that Tarver is unlikely to fight again this year after he takes on Hopkins. Plus factor in that Joe is tied to Showtime. I see him maybe taking a mandatory fight this year and seeing what happens next year.
I do think that Taylor will KO Wright late-on and think that Taylor-Calzaghe is a natural fight as Jermain is a big middleweight but it is never going to happen. Best we can hope for this year is Calzaghe-Kessler but again that won't happen. Possibly a coming home to Wales fight against a relatively easy opponent? Likelyhood is that Joe will have those three fights over the next 20 months then retire so he has to get the right opponents to make a push for great status as he does not have it just yet, only the opportunity to get it.
If his next fight isn't Kessler or Beyer, I'm going to assume a lot of people are going to come down from that high after the win over Lacy.stujones wrote:Just read he would rather fight Roy Jones than Antonio Tarver.
Damn - gutted about that, but given his history of opponents not entirely surprised.
Here is the quote, not sure of the source - just a email contact said he found it on the net... and he's usually reliable.Mattyp151 wrote:If his next fight isn't Kessler or Beyer, I'm going to assume a lot of people are going to come down from that high after the win over Lacy.stujones wrote:Just read he would rather fight Roy Jones than Antonio Tarver.

I'm sorry but RJJ is not the fight to cement a legacy. The guy has lost 3 in a row in less than average fights, and isn't getting any younger. He's just looking to add a big name to his resume, and I think he's falling back to where he was before Lacy. I don't like that fight at all.stujones wrote:Here is the quote, not sure of the source - just a email contact said he found it on the net... and he's usually reliable.Mattyp151 wrote:If his next fight isn't Kessler or Beyer, I'm going to assume a lot of people are going to come down from that high after the win over Lacy.stujones wrote:Just read he would rather fight Roy Jones than Antonio Tarver.

Its what Joe says about Tarver and Jones is alarming... he admits Tarver is the main man, but says he would rather fight Jones.
"I'll think about my options, but if I could get the likes of Antonio Tarver or Roy Jones Jr in the States and the money is right I'd go for it.
"Tarver's the main man at the moment, but he's not exciting. Roy Jones is more of a legend and would probably be my choice."
I've been thinking about this fight a lot since Saturday. Kessler has all the skills you say, and comes to fight... but I think the first couple rounds would be crucial. I actually envisaged Calzaghe starting at a blazing pace, and blowing the Dane away before the halfway mark. Mikkel comes to fight... but at a certain level. If he can get his jab going in the face of a blistering, bamboozling... erm... assault really... then it could very much be game on, but I don't know. The past couple days I've had doubts I never had before (had thought this would be a really intruiging contest... which I suppose it still might be).steve689 wrote:I agree, i have been a fan of Kessler for a while now, of course after Calzaghe's rousing win over Lacy i will have to rethink my claim that Kessler will turn out to be the best of the SM championsCalzaghe set a high standard on Saturday. Still if anyone else at SM can give Calzaghe a good fight it's Kessler, he is strong, has an excellent jab and gets stronger as fights progress, that was when he came into his own to stop Lucas and he came on strong to take the decision off Mundine in Australia.
Shame they didn't interview Kessler at the arena on Saturday, he speaks good english and they interviewed that idiot Lily Savage a while back at a a Khan fight so why not fish out Kessler for a quick word? Ask him what is immediate plans were. One would imagine he was there to make a fight with the winner. As for Beyer you may as well rule him out of the mix, he is content to stay in Germany and fight mandatories and voluntary unworthies until he retires and the next German takes over the WBC belt.
BINGO! He has plenty of fights left for him at SMW, seeing as there are not only 2 other title holders, but many young faces that are willing to make a statement. If he took a money fight, or a "legend" type fight against another huge name at a different weight class (IE: Hopkins), and got out of the game after that, I'd be fine with it. But for him to take a obviously shot RJJ, and expect it to further cement his legacy in history, is a dumb managerial move.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Screw LH, Joe can achieve more by sticking at SM and racking up three more wins against quality opposition.
Clear up SM, and then have one try and LH like Bernard is doing.
