This is an excellent post. I ended up with several concussions in my younger days because I thought quitting was cowardly. As I recovered from them and changed the direction of my life I realized just what you are saying here. There is much more to life than reaching the final bell; it's very hard for some fighters to see this, and even harder for the schlubs watching at home.Impractical Poster wrote:I used to find myself criticizing fighters for quitting. As I grew older I realized how selfish I was being. Especially seeing the current state of Magomedov. We are not the ones in there taking punches. I'm sure Walters did everything he could up until that point and nothing was working on Lomachecnko. He was only going to get battered going down the stretch. It's Walters who has to live the rest of his life and provide for his family, not us.
So, for those bashing Walters, or any other fighter putting their life on the line for our entertainment....eff You!

I think most of us are seasoned boxing fans and will have seen allsorts over the years, as such we will set the bar for different things like punch power, skills and heart at different levels depending on what we've seen, only a total newcomer to the sport would have his bar for commitment to the job in hand set low enough to find Walters retirement acceptable, that's me talking as a boxing fan, in reality Walters was the one in there and his decision should be respected

It's not basketball, if a fighter no longer wants to fight it's his decision. I'm surprised the majority of responses aren't venomous like all the ridiculous Victor Ortiz crap. It had grown fairly dull by then anyway. Loma is a great talent, but I watched max deep throat ward for an hour last week, giving lomachenko mouth love for 30 minutes was more than enough.

Walters quit a little bit early. It appeared to be a case of take the money and run. Walters isn't that good anyways he is case of someone who could drain down to lower weight and fight smaller fighters, when against people his own size he appears as a good fighter not great. It would have been a matter of time before Loma took him out, it did appear that Walters quit early none the less. I am not the type though that likes to see people take unnecessary punishment. But that No mas was a little early.

Walters clearly seemed on the way down. First few rounds were kind of slow, but Loma controlled them, the next few were increasingly in Loma's favour, and the seventh saw Walters backpedaling and looking weary as he got tagged with a fight high number of shots.
I was surprised he pulled out, but it's not just like he was getting outboxed just a bit or had one poor round; he was down 7-0 or 6-1 at most generous, showed no signs of being able to turn it around, was being hit increasingly more, and though some believe he didn't look hurt I think he was near the end. Of course it looks bad to many people and seems to have damaged his reputation, but from a competitive standpoint I think he was pretty much done anyway, and pulling the plug spared him more punches to the head.

Walters clearly WASN'T fine... He was taking some very sharp punches that were hard for most people to pick up on, but his head was getting batted around and they were rocking him.. Lomachenko waved goodbye to Walters at the end of the 7th.. They both knew what was going on.. But you don't quit right then.. You risk getting knocked out and try to turn it around..gilgamesh wrote:It could've went 40 rounds and Walters would've been fine. Exaggerate much?Cent0089 wrote:he was taking a beating, Loma punches are harder than you gouys think. Fighters are dying after 12 rounds like this.
Lomachenko was winning clearly, yes, but it was nowhere near that kind of beating.
If you get dropped hard or beaten down, maybe you can use some discretion.. You can think about whether it's wise to get up by 10.. But Walters wasn't down or wobbling.. Mayweather got nailed by Mosley, he would have dropped if he didn't throw on an instantaneous clinch.. Floyd staggered and wobbled around and kept throwing like crazy.. That's a significant risk, but that's what you do because you're a fighter.. You're not a choir boy.
