Which of our laws and institutions are based on christian principles, and how so?

Stealing, murder, adultery.

As far as i know, the ancient German legal traditions brought over by the Saxons predated their accepting of Christianity by at least 200 years and probably more, so you cant say those prohibitions or their place in English law were based on Christianity at all. These traditions were the English law till 1066

Then you had William the Conqueror bring the next change, post roman era, and his magistrates were secular not religious, and basically all English common law stems from the above two sources. AFAIK anyway there is almost no christian influence in the laws that were made, why they were made or how they were carries out

I'll take your word for it, it was just a guess. I don't realy know where our laws came from, but before I read that I would have guessed at a Christian influence.

Tiny bit of googling tells me, for example, that trial by jury was brought to England by pagan Vikings. And obviously, there were countries with laws that preceded Christianity, and these laws tended to look darkly upon murder and theft, so the idea that those prohibitions is a christian inheritance doesn't convince me at all.

I've read a fair bit on Anglo Saxon culture/ law and the transition through 1066 and onwards.

The presence of a legal system in itself was pretty much antithetical to religious authority, in the sense that it shows the community (earlier) or king (rather than god) has the prerogative to judge.

But seriously, it doesn't really matter if you're a Christian or not, we all live in a Christian country, our laws, monarchy and institutions are based on Christian principles, and if anyone doesn't want to accept these values then there's plenty of other places they can live in perfect harmony.

We live in a culturally Christian country, in the sense we have Christmas and Easter holidays for example, but we don't really live in a practising one. Christians are fewer in number than ever with the biggest increase being people who simply have no religion. We know church attendance has pretty much collapsed, and surveys show belief in God just keeps on falling.

So whilst we may still look forward to Christmas, it's more about family/food/booze/presents than the birthday of Christ. Interesting thread mind!

The common law is based on the laws of Moses, in the Old Testament. All judges in this country take their judicial oath on the bible,or Koran.
The monarch swore her oath on the bible to uphold Christianity in this country and its dominions. As I said you don't need to be a Christian but it IS a Christian country. Every argument about where our laws come from has a counter argument , and they change over the decades. The opinion shifts depending on the political view prevailing at the time.
It's funny how nobody seems to have much faith nowadays, but I've a story from the Falklands war. At night when the Marines were attacking Goose Green they came under heavy fire. They were a tough lot, but from speaking to someone who was there, you would be amazed at how many Christians suddenly appeared when the bullets were belting off the ground around them!

Faith is just belief without evidence. Be nice to people, do unto others as you would to yourself, don't steal or murder. There's plenty of evidence for why these things are good.

Needing to believe in a bloke who could walk on water and who's father was actually the omniscient creator of the universe so you can go to a heavenly domain when you die? Sounds like bollocks to be fair, just like Allah, Buddah, Odin, Zeus and all the other made up figures in religion.
