I thought Chang was going to run away with it. He was still in the fight late on and still putting the effort in, I just felt his work got scrappier as he tired and Zapata picked him off.
but they were close rounds late on and I could easily see Chang being awarded a couple of them and it being a Chang win. Don't think I could see it being wide enough to call it a robbery though, I thought it was a close fight.

I commented on the light flyweight thread that Chang barely used the jab and it's what I felt was the major factor in him losing to Humberto Gonzalez.
He did use it slightly more in the Zapata bout but again I think it was a failing in his game. He made those raiding attacks, bursting into range from distance, sometimes swinging wild shots. I felt when those stopped having success, there wasn't much to score him rounds on. If he'd put the jab out more often I'd have felt he was more involved in those late rounds.
Not sure how effective the jab might have been against the rangier guy mind you....

Based upon the scores in that fight, since there were no knockdowns or pt deductions that I remember, one judge would have to have called 8 rds even and another 6.

***NB - OK Seamus, I've amended the post to account for my stupidity.***

Harmodio Cedeno 147-144 - 3 rounds to 6, so there were 6 even, fair enough I suppose
Jae Keun Kim 145-148 - 5 rounds to 2. this guy scored 8 rounds even. That's some indecisive judging :maybe:
Tony Castellano 144-142 - 6 rounds to 8 and one even....this card actually looks like the only sane one

I've seem some funny official scorecards in the last few fights I've scored

It was a 15 rounder not 12, so the judges scored 8, 6, and 1 round even respectively.

R5.10-9 WV
R6.10-9 WV
R7.10-10

R9.10-8 ND (Vazquez down from a left upper cut followed by a left hook)
R10.10-10
R11.10-9 ND
R12.10-9 ND

Nonito Donaire 117-113

Vazquez really frustrated Donaire in this bout with his blocking and slipping punches, but he just never through enough back to win. He jabbed very well, but seemed to only do it in spurts.

Duke McKenzie vs Jesse Benavides

R1.10-9 JB
R2.10-9 JB

R10.10-8 DM (Beavides down from a right to the jaw)
R11.10-10

Jesse Benavides 116-113

McKenzie looked the superior boxer for the first minute of nearly every round, but Benavides took so many rds back with his better work rate, and his ability to pressure and crowd McKenzie on the ropes. All 3 Brit commentators had Benavides just edging it.

Tracy Harris Patterson vs Daniel Zaragoza II

R1.10-9 THP
R2.10-9 THP
R3.10-9 DZ
R4.10-10
R5.10-10
R6.10-9 THP

Tracy Harris Patterson wins by TKO in Rd 7 after Zaragoza's right eye is badly cut. 59-57 Patterson at the time.

Davie, I went back and scored Jung Koo Chang vs Hilario Zapata. I gave Zapata the 3rd, 10th, and 13th rds, and called the 15th even for an abreviated score of 137-130 for Jung Koo Chang. I seem to remember another guy agreeing it was a robbery on another thread, but I believe that was without a score. In the end, I think Zapata slipped, blocked and rolled with alot of punches, but was just outworked by Chang who just kept the punches coming. As a side note, Chang doesn't make alot of use of his jab, and yet it's decent. Guess will have to get a 3rd or 4th opinion on this one.

For a change here's a recent fight I just scored, I caught it on my phone when it happened but as ever a decent screen makes a difference

Roman Gonzalez Carlos Cuadras

115-113 Gonzalez, the judges were too wide IMO an excellent fight with loads of skill and action, Cuadras coming on late made it really uncomfortable for Gonzalez and could have come away with a draw on my card because the last round was very close

Vito Antuofermo 144-142

This like most Antuofermo fights was hard to score. Vito can get hit with 3 clean blows and then tag his opponent with one, drive him into the ropes pin him there, and then do quite alot of rough housing. I thought he beat Minter after recently watching the bout again, but this one I wouldn't dispute too much if someone insisted that Minter just did edge it. A wide decision either way however would be ridiculous.
Seamus, I scored this one today and saw you had already scored it some time ago. Here is how I saw it.

Round 1: 10-9 Minter
Round 2: 10-9 Minter
Round 3: 10-9 Minter
Round 4: 10-9 Minter
Round 5: 10-9 Vito
Round 6: 10-9 Vito
Round 7: 10-10 Even
Round 8: 10-9 Vito
Round 9: 10-9 Minter
Round 10: 10-9 Vito
Round 11: 10-9 Vito
Round 12: 10-9 Vito
Round 13: 10-10 Even
Round 14: 10-8 Vito (disagreed with the knockdown but the ref counted it)
Round 15: 10-9 Vito

Total: 145-141 Antuofermo

Antuofermo's style can be unappetizing at best. A crowding/mugging style that is lacking in finesse, but nonetheless effective. I felt his mugging and explosive punches negated Minter's effective jab. The knockdown was dubious. Minter looked like he may have tangled his legs when that punch/push came in. Hard to say. But I do think Antuofermo got robbed here.
Here's how I scored it on Horses 52 week challenge., I had a bit more love for Minters boxing
1. 10 - 9 Minter.
2. 9 - 10 Vito.
3. 10 - 9 Minter.

7. 9 - 10 Vito.
8. 10 - 9 Minter.
9. 9 - 10 Vito.
10. 9 - 10 Vito
11. 10 - 9 Minter.
12. 10 - 10 Even.
13. 10 - 9 Minter
14. 8 - 10 Vito.
15. 10 - 9 Minter.

144 - 141 Minter

When I looked at the judges score cards I wondered how Dakin could score it to Minter by 12 rounds and Sanchez to Antuofermo by 2. But I think I understand now.
I landed somewhere in the middle but this was a fight where Jim Watt would not have tired telling us "it's a bit of what you like"
There were a few I scored to Vito where he was having success but he was crude and Minter looked fairly well in control with his boxing.
Equally there were a few where I scored to Minter for cleaner work, particularly straight head shot (which I ussually give more credit to) while Vito was the aggressor and landing some solid, albeit messy shots and getting some good work in downstairs.

I must be on a Vito Antuofermo kick because I decided to re-watch the first fight between Vito and Marvin Hagler. Now, I haven't seen this fight since I watched it live back in '79 and at that time I scored it 8-7 in Hagler's favor. So, I really didn't have too much of a problem with the draw decision. Click on 38 years later and here is my scorecard today.

Round 1: 10-9 Marvin
Round 2: 10-9 Marvin
Round 3: 10-9 Marvin
Round 4: 10-9 Marvin
Round 5: 10-9 Vito
Round 6: 10-9 Marvin
Round 7: 10-9 Marvin
Round 8: 10-9 Marvin
Round 9: 10-9 Marvin
Round 10: 10-9 Vito
Round 11: 10-10 Even
Round 12: 10-9 Vito
Round 13: 10-9 Vito
Round 14: 10-9 Vito
Round 15: 10-9 Marvin

Total: 145-141 Marvin Hagler

I recall back in the day I had the fight dead even going into the 15th and gave the last round to Marvin. Looking at it now I obviously have 2 rounds scored differently. One round that I had for Vito back then I now scored for Marvin and another round for Vito I now have even, which makes up a 9-5-1 card in rounds. A herculean effort by Vito but Hagler scored with the cleaner shots. I looked over this site and another site and there does seem to be a question over rounds 7,8 & 9, where some people scored those rounds for Vito and I had it for Marvin. Anyway, I would love to hear some of your views

Did not. Had to attend a family wedding, which I feel was very inconsiderate of them. Did they have to schedule this on a fight-night? LOL! I had done a bit of studying on Chocalitio's opponent and was so impressed with his record that I predicted to a buddy of mine that I think Gonzalez is going to scrape home, but not without a scare. Of course I know now (because he called me) that the scare came in the first round. But I am seeing all kinds of mixed views over the net on the decision. Did you feel it was correct? I should be able to catch this next weekend, but I respect the views of all you guys on this thread. So, talk to me, dude.

Thanks, Counter, I just read it on the British Forum. Very comprehensive. I'm looking forward to seeing it when they replay it. BTW, I know you're a fan of Gonzalez - and that goes for me too - but do you think he's pushed the envelope one weight too many? He's won titles at Straw, Jr. Fly, Fly and now Super Fly. I didn't think he was very dominant against Cuadras and now this last night. I really think he should have stayed at Fly, but I guess you have to go where the money is.

Totally agree, his shots clearly don't have the same effect against the bigger guys,he looks 3/4lbs lighter than them in the ring and with a lot less solid muscle as though he walks around lighter than them still. Very difficult for a pressure fighter if he can't dominate physically, which goes to show the skill levels he has IMO to just shade both the Cuelar fight and last nights effort.

Re: Post Your Scorecards

Post by scartissue »

Had a gander today at a fast-paced 10 rounder between Gaby Canizales and Greg Richardson in what was - for me - a bit of a scoring nightmare. 10 point must system.

Round 1: 10-9 Richardson
Round 2: 10-10 Even
Round 3: 10-9 Richardson
Round 4: 10-9 Canizales
Round 5: 10-9 Canizales
Round 6: 10-9 Richardson
Round 7: 10-9 Richardson
Round 8: 10-10 Even
Round 9: 10-9 Canizales
Round 10: 10-9 Canizales

Total: 96-96 Draw

This is one those fights where you ask yourself, 'what am I looking for in a fight?' If it is the pop-pop-pop then you will like Richardson, who fights a very controlled fight. But then there is Canizales who trudges after him and will land one wicked shot to Greg's three flicks. I felt there was a fine line in several rounds and I am obviously in the minority because official scores were 97-93 (twice) and 96-94. I love nice boxing and Greg did a magnificent job, but I don't think enough heed was given Gaby's power shots. Anyways, I'm not going to argue about this decision because Greg did well to stay on his bike for 10 rounds. I will say this, I remember when this fight was being televised - although I didn't see it at the time - and remember thinking to myself, 'this is absolutely the wrong fighter for Canizales'. So, I don't know what Manny steward was thinking when he agreed to the match.

Would it be impossible for him to try and pack on an extra 4-5 pounds of solid muscle then do a bit draining/rehydrating?
If he wants to stay at super fly, it looks like it's what he'll need to do. I could see him winning the Rungvisai rematch but I don't see it getting any easier than last night. But I can't see him getting past Inoue with that frame and power at 115lbs.

Obviously if he were to hammer the weights and start going in to the ring bigger it would affect other areas of his game. When he depends so heavily on work rate and his engine, it might not be wise, but his lack of pop is going to see him struggle to keep walking through opponents.

Recommendation/ request has anyone seen Gilberto Roman - Payakaroon?

I started watching at that time in the night when conscientiously scoring a fight is just beyond me, but it seemed like a good one

I say 'seemed', not only is it 'that time of the night' but there is some freaky-awful camerawork going on, I don't even know how to describe it but it's a 1980s fight filmed like you'd expected n the 1920s or something, it's effed up.

Anyways I'll return to it tomorrow to score but it seemed to be a really tough fight

Here's a blast from the past - the mid '60s to be exact - Joey Archer against Holly Mims

Round 1: Even
Round 2: Archer
Round 3: Mims
Round 4: Archer
Round 5: Mims
Round 6: Archer
Round 7: Archer
Round 8: Even
Round 9: Mims
Round 10: Archer

Total: 5-3-2 Archer

This was a study in Archer's boxing against Mims fighting in spurts. Good fight and so close. I see why their was such a dispute on the decision. I just think if Mims was a bit busier than trying to catch Archer with the haymaker he could have done better.
