That's not the full story. Chavez Jr agreed to the fight purse for the first option but didn't want to sign a contract extension with Top Rank. So he declined the bout and joined forces with Al Haymon.
A legal battle ensued with Top Rank claiming they were still owed one more fight with the highly-lucrative Chavez Jr., resulting in an out of court settlement.
Chavez Jr. not taking the Golovkin fight, was a decision based on his sour relationship with Top Rank rather than any perceived fear of fighting a man he used to regularly spar with.
