? Locketts arse in two slings with his frequent BN punditry????
Was watching this and the mrs was knitting and asked casually what was going on. As I often find now when I try and explain boxing to the uninitiated, there is so much bollocks going on behind the scenes, it makes me sad.
It was a cracking fight but another case of Terry O making the wrong decision.

Good point, that's probably one of his main sources of income.

I don't see what ranting and raving in the ring would've done, maybe Lockett had a word backstage with O'Connor, as mentioned TOC ruled a punch had the caused the cut so no matter if he or Gary stopped it, Smith wouldve won via TKO

The buck stops with Terry O'Connor, he was the ref and he got it wrong, trainers ranting and raving bring out the worst in the fighters I thought Lockett acted like a true pro, video technology is the answer....as well as the BBBC finally getting rid of the moron that is TOC

I don't think Pavlik does any other kind of rounds these days.

In the FW interview posted elsewhere on this forum, he says that if the corner had asked the ref to call the doctor then the fight would have been stopped with Williams as the winner. Is this correct. or would a Wiliams victory need to rely on the ref calling the cut as the result of a headclash ?

It just shows that Warren would have been gunning for it to go to the cards. It very well might have. Lockett royally f*cked this one up if you ask me. Completely panicked.

Can't the board rule it as a no decision?

Surely it would have only gone to the cards if the ref had called a headclash? Otherwise Vitali would have beaten Lewis...

Im not sure what a no decision is. Afaik theres no such thing but maybe it exists within the realms of appealing to the board, against a refs decision.
Because oconner called it apunch that caused the cut, if you pull out you lose. or if the doc says its too bad to continue you lose
If hed of called a headclash and the doc says its too bad to continue then it goes to the scorecards..
If its a headclash and your corner pulls you without seeking the advise of the doc then you lose.
I was there sat night so i didnt have the benefit of close up camers angles but if it was a headclash, which it seems to of been.
lockett as long as he or one of his corner definatly seen the clash and was sure in what happened cos lets not forget, the man who has the best view i.e the ref, doesnt always see things rightly. As long as they knew they saw a headclash they/ lockett should if been in the refs face demandin,g, what they saw.
If oconner still didnt listen then they can appeal to the board. The board could overturn the refs decision and still go back to the cards but this is highly unlikely, i suppose they could also give a no contest which is what you maybe mean by no decsion.
They cant order a rematch cos non of their belts were on the line.
This is my understanding of the situation.

That's good news. I googled him yesterday and it seemed he had some trouble with the law recently? Is he coming back?

What did you make of the fight from your view there Mark?

I thought Williams looked class; great feet+angles, changing rhythm with the jab, switching leads, feinting constantly to make Smith really hesitant, clever stuff up close with the little shoulder bumps to create space etc

Williams admitted he was tired but said he was getting his second wind, I thought he made Smith look completely ordinary and exposed the lack of head movement+ear muffs defence yet again.

In only seen a bit of the interview with Bunny but I think its him whose got his wires crossed, as far as I'm aware TOC never ruled it a head clash so either way its a TKO win for Smith

He did go mental at TOC and he was right next to officials so they got a earful to.
He's a classy guy though and his interview proved it.
He did go absolutly nuts at TOC though. Female doctor told Lockett he couldn't continue.

TOC didn't know what to do but as Smith was already jumping on the turnbuckle he decided to just let him carry on.

thats why it should be a no decision/contest.

lockett clearly shouts at the ref it was a headbutt, the sexy doctor tells lockett (but not the ref?) williams cant continue so the ref gets ready for the start of the round. no way could williams fight on with his eye like that so lockett had to pull him out, but the ref and/or doc should have already done that.

boxing news has "controversy" on the cover

christie's editorial is called "chaos and confusion" and calls for a rematch while saying perhaps its time to look at video replays. the board are quoted as saying it was hard luck for williams but the ref can only act on what he sees.

fight report from dennen wants a rematch and said williams deserved more after boxing so well but that smith had been coming on strong just before the end.

good reading so get a copy, hope more to come next week once a bit of time has elapsed.

Lockett was clearly unhappy but stayed professional. Talk of him letting down his fighter is nonsense. The fighter couldn't continue so he pulled him out. He did his job, his young fighter can heal and come again. Sensible corner work.

The doctor was waving her hands around to say no more - Lockett made the right call.

Correct on all counts, the focus should be on the ref, firstly it was not a punch that caused such a bad cut, secondly it was an intentional butt, either way Williams should of won. Liam Smith was headbutted by Williams before and then retaliated straight after with a more severe headbutt, that is intentional, the ref at worst should have called it an accidental head butt, but he he totally messed up, by calling it a punch and thus changing the whole result, yes Williams had a small cut before, but the headbutt opened up a terrible cut. Smith was coming on strong and Williams was starting to tire, unfortunately the headbutt ended the fight and we will never know what would have happened. Lockett was right to stop it, nothing worse then a trainer who has more bravery then his fighter.
