Mayweather vs. McGregor: WBC Diamond belt a 'maybe'

Post by Enlightened-One »

On the 14th June I made the following prediction:

Half an hour ago the WBC president (Mauricio Sulaiman) stated the following:
Mayweather vs. McGregor: WBC Diamond belt a 'maybe'

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has told ESPN that his world governing body will consider sanctioning Floyd Mayweather Jr against Conor McGregor for one of its belts.

Asked if the WBC Diamond belt -- an honorary championship awarded to the winner of a historic fight between two elite boxers -- could be on the line for Mayweather-McGregor, Sulaiman told ESPN: "Maybe, I don't know. I'm not against it. Of course this is a WBC board decision but we have to celebrate that boxing is having world attention regardless."

I expect the WBC to formally announce a belt, given the way he gushed about both fighters during this interview.

Thoughts?

Should be the Circus Elephant belt.

He can defend it against John Cena.

What is their sanctioning fee going to be? Would Mayweather and McGregor agree to give the WBC a percentage? I know Mayweather likes the WBC, but it would be millions of dollars. People that think this fight is a farce will consider the WBC as lacking in credibility if they are involved with a belt.

One of them has never been in a boxing match at all and the other is retired lol.

This is like... Making Deontay Wilder champion of the world or something.

Oh wait lol.

Isn't the sanctioning fee a standard rate of 3% of each fighters' purses for all WBC title belt contests?

This means that the greedy WBC would pocket at least $6m by sanctioning this bout (under the assumption that the combined purse total is at least $200m).

I know the standard is 3%, but this is a diamond belt, so maybe they would be even more greedy and want a higher percentage.

You could be right, but what you're suggesting requires a rule change, since the percentage is cast-in-stone according to their rule-book.

So if the WBC decided to implement a special one-off change to their rules, by demanding a higher percentage specifically for the Mayweather-McGregor fight, then I highly-doubt that either fighter would consider the WBC's involvement in their super-fight.

I honestly don't believe that the Mayweather-McGregor bout requires any of the sports' big four governing bodies to be involved in order to legitimise this contest, since at least 4m merely casual and mildly curious sports combat fans (in general) will inevitably pay Showtime's PPV fees in order to watch this bout, even if both men were only vying for the right to possess the Barbie doll pink princess diva belt!

The WBC appear to be a profit-making organisation, whereby they persistently seek opportunities to award belts for highly-lucrative fights as long as their sanctioning fees are paid in return, even if the fighters involved don't even possess a world ranking, which I feel undermines their credibility and purpose.

Floyd was at the WBC Convention. He proudly displays his WBC belts. I don't know if he would be against the WBC being involved even if he had to pay a few million dollars. I think McGregor would like a boxing belt too, so if he wins, he can say that he was a world champion in both sports. Of course, he would have to pay a percentage of his purse too.

Just watch the fight of Kovalev and Ward and then listen to the scorecards afterwards, I bet you'll laugh again.

You're probably right, lol. I expect Ward to get the decision again and people will still say he's the victim of racism.
