Funny. But that wasn't the general feeling at the time of the bout.

Lewis opened at around a 9-5 favorite and the odds steadily dropped.

For a while, Golota was actually a slight favorite.

As I recall, I took Lewis at about -160.

Golota looked pretty imposing against Bowe, despite the eventual outcome.

Few suspected Golota-Lewis would be a mismatch on the scale of Liston-Patterson.

The Pole was considered to have a decent chance to win the title that night.

To suggest otherwise is revisionist history.

Lou was all about holyfield. He was a great motivator, which is all the use Tyson would have for a trainer at that point. Mike had a very low ring iq, cus drilled into him what he had and it was the same with any of his trainers. What changed were his opponents and age.

Actually -- a lot of people believed Patterson had a good chance to beat Liston... They pointed to the fact Ingemar Johansson KO'd Eddie Machen in the 1st round -- and it took Sonny all night to deal with Machen... The same with the Foreman-Frazier match-up ... Little Joe was a solid favorite to win.

I think what a lot of people miss is size, strength, and fighting styles.. Golota was not only shorter and smaller, with shorter arms than Lewis -- he was a clod who couldn't get out of his way.. If you missed him with a right hand shot he was insulted.. Punching bag versus Pugilist Specialist.

He was whole inch shorter than Lewis. Accidentaly, he was also an inch shorter then Bowe.

It is easy to rewrite history retrospectively, but actually it was the way SenorPipino said - Lewis was the slight favourite, with most people expecting Golota to give good fight.

I had read (somewhere) that after the fight when Andrew Golata went home,he started complaining about numbness in his arm
and feeling naucious but he didnt want to go to the hospital, but around 3 in the morning his wife insisted
and the doctors discovered that he had a concussion and a fracuted left cheekbone as well as a herniated disc in his neck (between
the fourth and fifth cervial veratbrae) he also had some bleeding on the brain,
as well a cut over and under his left eye from Mike Tyson's headbutts.

What MOST people expect doesn't mean CRAP!!!! .... Most people expected Joe Frazier to beat George Foreman and he didn't have a shot in HELL!!! Technically Frazier was only giving away 3 pounds to Foreman.. but in reality, if you removed the fat it's more like 20 pounds and a massive strength deficit.. Liston was barely taller than Patterson but they looked like Mutt and Jeff.. Lewis was very formidable looking as an athlete at that time and Golota looked like crap.. Golota was so stiff an immobile it looked like Lewis was going to run over him like a slow muskrat on a rural Montana road.

Bowe was nearly as inept and slow as Golota.. I remember Herbie Hide boxing the crap out of Bowe for 3 rounds until Riddick started mauling him.

Lewis's weight was better distributed which actually made him a lot bigger and stronger... Maybe you missed my previous post about Foreman being only 3 pounds heavier than Frazier... In truth he was HUGE and Frazier was teeny... And that's the way that fight played out.

Does anybody??? ... You're never going to take up Boxing as a sport and later a profession if you're too adverse to getting hit... Nobody likes to get killed or badly injured.. You'll quit a boxing match if you believe that's about to occur.. For this particular fight there was good reason to believe that.

Ali actually seemed to like to get hit.

Of course, it's a matter of degree but I've seen some pros that really hate it. Wlad, Mark Breland, and Golota come immediately to mind.

What a lot of good that did Ali

IMOP Golota didnt fight anything like Tommy Morrison.
Golota sort of resembled Joe Bugner i thought, but had some meaness in him.
BTW It was three weeks before the Tyson fight that Golota fractured his left cheekbone
during a sparring session.
Golota wanted the fight called off but his trainer Al Certo didnt
want it called off a reportedly said Golota would be a "big Baby" if it was.

One of the reasons why -- if you have a fractured cheek bone and broken neck -- you might want out of a fight where you're getting killed.

I thought Golota actually looked his best in the second half of the second round, like he was just now getting "The Eye of the Tiger"
then went back to his corner and had a melt down when he had some time to think about what was going on.

Yes, he was also ahead against Michael Grant and quit too.

He quit a lot for a good fighter. Maybe he could have beaten Tyson, but 2 Bowe wins and 1 Grant win were in the bag.

I think this "sports interviewer" now has his own talk show on ESPN or maybe CNN.(because he sounds like he may be a real jerk-off which they like their reporters to be).

Kalan, going back to my question. Did you face disciplinary action when you were in the marines and refused to go to 'nam?

Quoting from the article
"If he had sustained another serious blow to the head he could have become paralyzed," Yapor said. "There's no way I would have allowed him to enter the ring for the second round." ...

"There's no way I'm blaming the physician who was there," Yapor said. Golota told trainer Al Certo after the first round he wanted to quit, but Certo told him he could win the fight. After the second round, Mariola Golota said, "He was talking to him (Certo) in Polish." ...

Golota told referee Frank Garza more than once in English, "I quit." ...

Golata, who had a seizure and was hospitalized after being knocked out in one round by heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis on Oct. 4, 1997, became disoriented and nauseous ... Golota appeared coherent in a couple of brief television interviews immediately after the fight. Once he got to the dressing room, his wife said: "He was pretty incoherent. He was stuttering. Then after about 15 minutes Showtime came in and got a few sentences out of him." ...

Golota's wife said eggs were thrown at her law office in a Polish section of Northwest Chicago and that garbage was dumped in front of it, but that it was cleaned up before she saw it. Her husband was peppered with popcorn and showered with beer and soda when he left the ring
Fight fans, chief seconds and Boxing officials can be so stupid I can't even believe it... It's not their life at stake... Boxing can be the pits at times.

Of course not dummy... They didn't like me me being a c/o and talking about the war effort the way I did... I'm sure all those guys see things differently now.

You definitely don't act like any c/o in the history of the marines. That's your biggest lie yet.

Nothing to do with that, cupcake, you have no self control or discipline and you're an habitual liar. You're no more marine than you were a fighter or trainer to the stars. Just a sad decrepit old prune. You're to be pitied. I hate to break it to you, Forrest Gump of boxrec, nobody believes a fuckin word you say.
