I love Dylan's song "Hurricane."
The use of harmonica is outstanding.
More than 40 years after it was released I still play it on bar jukeboxes.
But Dylan made Carter out to be some genteel gift to society instead of the thug he really was:
"Ruben could take a man out with just one punch, but he never really liked to talk about it all that much
'It's my work,' he'd say, 'And I do it for pay. And when it's all over I'd just as soon go in my way.'
"Up to some paradise, where the trout streams flow and the air is nice. And ride a horse along a trail, until they took him to the jailhouse where they tried to turn a man into a mouse "
Somehow I can't picture bad ass, ghetto dwelling Ruben Carter going horseback riding in some Shangri-La setting.
Dylan made Carter, who spent much of his pre-boxing youth in various detention centers, sound like Jesus Christ incarnate.
Several Canadians believed in Rubin Carter's innocence so much that they sacrificed years of their lives to free him... That’s why Denzel was so taken with the script. These people who didn’t know Carter painstakingly compiled a record of the lies, paid off witnesses, and manufactured evidence that corrupt police and prosecutors complied to frame Carter... Carter had to get out of the corrupt state court system and take his case to the federal courts to get justice...
His last ditch shot was very conservative Federal Judge H. Lee Sarokin... Once you appeal to the Federal system from state court you get one (1) shot... If you don't win you're dead.
However all the facts were undeniable and all in Carter's favor... There wasn’t a scintilla of credible evidence against him. Nothing stood up to the least scrutiny.
Judge Sarokin was so incensed at the racism and coaching of witnesses who later changed their stories, and the revamping and coordination of police reports, that he ordered Carter freed immediately on a Writ of Habeas Corpus.
Habeas Corpus is a recourse in US law where a person unlawfully imprisoned can be released immediately..,. It’s a harsh and dramatic step.... Had the prosecutors and police believed in their case they could have appealed, but they would have to defend their lies and manipulations in court and be subject to prosecution for perjury.
Needless to say they didn’t dare challenge Sarokin’s ruling… That’s why Denzel Washington wanted to do the movie… A lot of the courtroom drama was acted out directly from court transcripts.... It’s one of those decades long legal fights that have a happy ending.... John Travolta and Julia Roberts also did movies involving high profile legal battles where the little guy beat down the multi-million dollar legal teams of corporate giants... They all were gripping.
