He's looked like sh*t every time out in recent fights. Even a 6 rounder against a bum he looked like sh*t last time out. He's mentally shot. Even if he's still physically capable his confidence in himself is virtually non-existent.
Gerry Cooney...poo stacked high.
I think Cooney would've kicked Price's ass for what that's worth.

"Gerry Cooney...poo stacked high."

What are these posters, about eight years old?

Gerry Cooney could have and should have been the champ. He was terribly mismanaged, including by himself. The hardest hitting southpaw ever. Here he is against Ken Norton in 1981. Norton had fought, and beat, M. Ali three times, though in two of those fights Ali was the beneficiary of two of his many fixed fights, crook judges awarding him the unearned victories.

I grew up one town from Cooney and followed him immediately when he turned pro. Frankly...Norton was done. no where near the Norton that fought Holmes, much less Ali. Cooney had a chin as thin as a light bulb and was Orthodox. (he was a lefty that got turned around so he could get more fights, as well as the little known fact that he was all left hand in his natural stance.)...Dude got smoked by Michael Spinks, and a 40 year old Foreman, among others. I'm sorry, but I have to vehemently disagree. Perhaps if he did more training and less cocaine, he'd been better. He was no more than a side show attraction who happened to be white.

Hey, we can't all be as intellectually gifted as you are...

"Gerry Cooney...poo stacked high."

Cooney also beat Jimmy Young, yet another fighter that beat M. Ali and "lost" yet another crook judge decision.

One thing you said that was true:

"Perhaps if he did more training and less cocaine"

That AND terrible mismanagement.

Obnoxious fellow.

Wikipedia:

"Cooney, who is naturally left-handed, used an orthodox stance. This provided him with a powerful jab and a lethal left hook, but a comparatively weak right, which he seldom used except in combinations."

3 rounds max I'm thinking, and that's only if Povetkin is being kind and not throwing any right hands.
Price looks good until he steps up competition...Reminds me of Gerry Cooney.
Cooney fought decent competition... His fights with Roy Lyle and Ken Norton were blink jobs... Wladimir Klitschko proved that no matter how talented you are you need a great trainer... You'll have flaws somebody can exploit if you fight a lot of different styles... Plus you need the mental strength to overcome defeat and get better... Cooney self destructed at 25.

Price just never had the ability period... He's a one note trumpet.

Good observation about Cooney.
Many people discount him now a days.

Cooney beat not just decent, but top tier fighters - Norton, Young, Lyle. He had a couple of show biz guys for managers instead of real boxing trainers. He was terribly mismanaged. Then he was out partying all the time. He could have been champ. Watch the Holmes-Cooney fight video. One of the most electric fights ever. Cooney should have won it. But he had only fought two rounds in over two years before the fight. It was the hottest venue for a heavyweight championship fight ever, held outdoors in Las Vegas in the Mojave desert on a sweltering night under bright lights. But the worst mistake of all was they had him go out and not fight his fight, his fight being throwing bombs and going for the quick knockout, the way he always fought. Instead he tried to pace himself for a long fight. I was in NYC at the time. I listened to Art Rust Jr., a radio talk show guy who talked a lot about boxing, a rarity. Rust was a black guy and he was a Cooney fan and he was saying just what I'm saying.

Price --Povetkin doesn't exactly meet the OP 's criteria of "two guys with shaky chins."

We know that Price's jaw starts to crack at the sound of the bell, but what evidence is there that Povetkin's chin is just as dismal in quality?

None. In fact Povetkin's always shown a pretty sturdy chin. Even being dropped 4 times or so against Wlad he still made it the distance.

He is tough and takes a good punch, as compared to other top 10's.

Gerald McClellan vs. Julian Jackson. I can't think of a fight involving two guys with more P4P power. Both guys were some of the hardest hitters MW has ever seen.

Speaking of Jackson, I was certain that his title fight with Dennis The Magician Milton would be over in a flash.

Jackson's chin wasn't great but Milton's jaw was exceptionally soft.

Predictably, the Hawk made the Magician vanish in the 1st round.

With all due respect, the trio that you mention were all thoroughly past their primes when they fought Cooney.
Lyle was totally shot & had just been KO'd in two rounds by the limited Lynn Ball. And, Norton was coming off of two desperate, life & death struggles with Scott Ledoux & "Tex" Cobb sandwiched around a year-long retirement following a KO by 1 at the hands of Earnie Shavers.
Of the trio, Jimmy Young had the most left, but he was still well removed from his peak. And, even though that was the case he still gave Cooney his toughest fight. But, credit to Cooney, he was able to bust up Young's eye with his hook to force the stoppage.
As far as Cooney not fighting "his fight" vs Holmes by not attacking the champion enough early on, he certainly attempted to, but all it resulted in was him being dropped by a Holmes counter right hand in round two. It was after that knockdown that Cooney elected to box with Holmes.

Valid points you make, Sweet V. I'll have to watch the fight again, especially round two.

By the way, does anyone know what's up with Tex Cobb these days. He was my favorite, an intelligent and funny guy. He used to have a website and i think it might still be there, but untouched for years. His ex wife was actually posting on one of the boxing forums for a while. Strangely enough she really liked him.

Art Rust Jr. passed away in Jan. 2010. I sure would like to hear a recording of his radio shows at the time of that fight.

You are entirely correct. Cooney was hype. All left hand. Easy to hit. Only old guys to fight. He got a dose of reality early in the Holmes fight.

Hamed V Kelley: Crazy fight where 2 guys decide to abandon any pretence that they were professional boxers & decided to hang their chins out to dry & test each others best shots! :oo

I'm actually surprised it went as long as it did: I suppose it's a testimony as to how tough & game they both were.
