Big Bear

Post by Tommyscc »

Is this something British fighters use
And what’s the big attraction with it in terms of preparation?

It’s altitude training that made it a destination.
Very popular with Americans.
George Groves has done camps there, dunno which other British fighters have.

Yeah Lewis trained there. Obviously most famous because Ali trained there. Did Barrera not train there for the Hamed fight?

I believe so. I think that’s where the ‘Jeremy Williams Judo throw’ happened?

De La Hoya owned a big training facility there which he used to prepare for his fights. I always associated Big Bear with him. I didn’t realise Ali used it as a training base too.

Ali is synonymous with Deer Lake, Big Bear only started in the 90s so i doubt Ali trained there.

Weird that - when I saw Big Bear the fist person I thought of was Ali for some reason

Altitude, it’s almost twice the height of Ben Nevis.
Focus, it’s completely cut off from, well, anywhere. Once you’re there that’s all there is until you’re done .

You really should be training at high altitude and recovering at low altitude to maximise the benefits but it doesn't seem to be going GGG or Gassiev too much harm.

Apparently Arreola had one training camp there and felt like he was being held hostage so the solitude won't suit everyone.

I read a British Fighter went out there but soon came back as they found it so tough

I think Paul Ingle went there with Lennox during their Maloney days. Paul got homesick. That's not unusual for him. He'd get homesick for Scarborough when he was training in Hull.

I remember some huge Puerto Rican heavyweight in that camp trying convince us all how brilliant Harrison was going to be.
NeveR heard off him again either

Yeah, there was a short documentary on his time there. Think Audley had that knack of convincing folk how brilliant he was no matter how much evidence to the contrary.

Audley was a skilled boxer.

With big gloves, headguard and mediocre partners I imagine he looked the business in sparring more than once.

It was only under the pressure of big occasions against decent opponents that he fell to pieces.
