At the time of Ali-Frazier I there was a newspaper article that broke down the fighters take. Frazier, who was a stock corporation was getting just over 52% of his purse (battle money), Ali's take (of his own purse) was less than 50% (in the mid 40s.) And that's before personal taxes. Sad! I believe Dundee himself was taking 30% from Ali. That's why Leonard dumped Dundee when he could.

Anything The Nation of Islam got Ali surely gave willingly; but the good news is that when they turned on him during his prohibition period (denounced him) they cut themselves out of the big 70s paydays. Good!

Ali was dead broke when he fought Larry Holmes.... He had no chance in Hell, but he HAD to do it.

But it didn't have to go so long... Holmes got angry and started glaring at Ali's corner... "You gonna stop it?"

Dundee picked up on it... "I'M THE CHIEF SECOND... I'M STOPPING IT!!!" The other seconds were bitching at him.

Pre-Holmes, wasn't Ali's biggest purse was for 6,500,00 vs Norton?

It's funny but it was Leonard (Leonard-Duran) not a HW who opened the door to the eight figure payday. Most of the other payday big jumps came from HWs. Sullivan was the first to take it up into the ten thousands; Dempsey to six figures, and Ali/Frazier to multiple millions. But I think it was Leonard who first broke the 10 million mark (guarantee plus PPV revenue share). Then Holyfield took it to 20 million, and finally a mere LW, Floyd Mayweather took it to $100,000,000.
It was Leonard/Tommy from my recollection.
