Just watched this fight tonight funnily enough, Berbick did give him a good fight, especially first half, Holmes championship experience and class told in the end though, Pretty sure Berbick had only 20/21 fights going in, very commendable performancebennie wrote: ↑11 Apr 2018, 08:50Berbick gave him a good fight and snapped a run of eight straight stoppages in world title defences for Holmes.handsofstone wrote: ↑11 Apr 2018, 08:18 Ive been watching a lot of Holmes lately, i'd already seen his fights with Ali, Tyson, Norton, Cooney, Michael Spinks(x2) and Holyfield but Ive recently watched Shavers(x2), Weaver(x2) and LeDoux and tonight I'm gonna watch Berbick
IMO Holmes in his prime stands a chance with any top HW in history, of course theres guys who may beat him but id make him fav against everyone including Ali and Louis, he has the most effective jab of all time

Berbick could fight but he was clearly unstable and is best remembered for his lamentable performance against Mike Tyson in 1986. He was the first man to beat Greg Page back in 1982 - when Page was being touted as the new Ali, and he also ended the world title aspirations of unbeaten "Mad" Mitch Green in 1985. He was a 4/1 underdog when he challenged Pinklon Thomas for the WBA heavyweight title in 1986 but exposed Thomas for the one-paced plodder that he was.

Page had a broken thumb, and probably lost weight the wrong way, for the brier time up to that point in the second, it was a close fight.bennie wrote: ↑12 Apr 2018, 04:54 Berbick could fight but he was clearly unstable and is best remembered for his lamentable performance against Mike Tyson in 1986. Holmes is a particularly bad style for joshua btw
Re: Frank Bruno v Larry Holmes (Nov 84)
For most fighters I'd say. I think he was the most balanced HW in history.

It's hard to imagine a worse style matchup for AJ. What makes it even worse is that Shavers landed a home run right hand on Holmes and Holmes was back on his feet at the count of 5.

Holmes wouldlve poggered him
Re: Frank Bruno v Larry Holmes (Nov 84)
Bruno would have no business in the same town as Larry Holmes never mind the same ring

I mentioned earlier in the thread ive been watching a lot of Holmes, he's a superb boxer, one of the best technical boxers of all time but he gets rocked at least once in every fight just about but always comes back firing and winning

It would have been the usual story with Bruno every time he stepped up in class (apart from one occasion); a plucky effort until the gets tired & pummelled on the ropes mid to late & stopped by the referee.
Re: Frank Bruno v Larry Holmes (Nov 84)
Larry would’ve busted big Frank up with the jab and probably forced a stoppage.

Bruno would struggle to beat the Holmes that beat Mercer.

But Holmes was on the slide in late 84.
Struggled with Bonecrusher. Unimpressive against Bey. In 83 Snipes gave him the scare of his reign.
He probably would skate by the immobile Bruno in the battle of the jabs, but I think it very well could have been competitive in 84.
Holmes championship class would still prove the difference.

Re: Frank Bruno v Larry Holmes (Nov 84)
The gulf in class would have been enormous. Holmes’s jab was a thing of beauty and he had a chin made of granite. Some of He bombs he took against Norton was unbelievable. The Shavers knockdown also showed what a true chin looks like.
He’d have beaten Frank black and blue and we’d have seen Bruno lumbering on the ropes in a stupor with Holmes teeing of on him. Ref would jump in.
Every time Bruno jumped to world level he fell short in the end (Tyson, Lewis, witherspoon) he gave a great account of himself against Lewis and Witherspoon but ultimately he didn’t have what it took to win.

And Bruno was a big, strong dude who caused many problems for good fighters early-midway into a fight, before running out of stamina and ideas.
When Larry settles he dismantles Bruno perhaps slowly and painfully. But Holmes, toward the end of his reign, might have to overcome some uncomfortable momentsto get there.
Re: Frank Bruno v Larry Holmes (Nov 84)
Bruno was competitive against Lewis and I could see him doing the same here until falling apart in the second half of the fight. Frank is much underrated.
Re: Frank Bruno v Larry Holmes (Nov 84)
Larry wins a tough fight in 11 rounds.
