I just found the De Leon vs Nelson waltz on YouTube, I randomly skipped through various parts of it and whenever I pressed play no one was throwing a punch lol

Got to be Nelson v De Leon for me as well.

Followed by Nelson v Warring.

Strange how someone known as "The Entertainer" could be in two of the most boring fights ever.

One of the worst that I can recall was the 12 round waltz that was Michael Nunn vs Alex Ramos. That one really stunk the joint out.

You are remembering this through rose tinted glasses Senor, it was 15 rounds! The most interesting thing about it was watching Muhammad Ali at ringside.

But whenever this subject comes up it's always DeLeon v Nelson for me.
You're right, Flump.

I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention to that epic struggle. Big surprise.

But 12 or 15, it sucked.

It must have been a "fight" that was near the end of the 15 round era.
Indeed. From the top of my head I think Holmes-Spinks II would have been the last heavyweight title fight to go 15 rounds.
That was an interesting bit of trivia so I googled it.

You're right. It was the last to go the distance.

Holmes vs Spinks ll was held in April 1986.

However the last scheduled 15 rounder in heavyweight history was Tucker vs Douglas in May 1987 for the vacant IBF title.

Tucker stopped Buster in the 10th round.

Page's WBA title was on the line, but both fought as if the belt was infected with AIDS.

Luckily I suspected beforehand that the bout was going to be a real snoozer, so I wasn't disappointed by it. It just lived down to my low expectations.

Somehow the judges decided that Tubbs did enough to deserve the decision and the title.

I felt that it should have been declared No Contest and both fighters' licenses revoked.
I was ringside for THE BLOCKBUSTER IN BUFFALO & it wasn't much more exciting in person than it was on TV, believe me. Lol.
As for the decision, there wasn't a whole lot to choose from between the two skills-wise as they were mirror images of one another in many ways but Tubbs definitely wanted it more than Page did that night. Had he not set the pace & kept his hands busier than Page did there would have virtually been no fight. It was a dull affair for sure but Tubbs deserved the nod.
Even in training camp Greg Page was unmotivated & listless in the weeks heading into the fight. I was there sparring with Louis Howard, Hector Camacho & the Hilton brothers who were all on the undercard & even got to go a few rounds with Page. Of course, being a welterweight at the time it wasn't actual sparring. He just liked to have "move arounds" with lighter fighters to work on his movement & defense. He usually used bantamweight Louis Curtis for that purpose but he wasn't available for some reason that day & so I got the opportunity. Which, rather than moving around much, mostly consisted of me belaboring his midsection while he lay on the ropes. So, yeah, he was even lazy in camp preparing for the fight.

How much did you pay to witness that shlock?

Or did you get a freebie?

At least I only had to pay my monthly HBO bill for it. It was cheap back in 1985. Probably under $8 monthly.

Didn't you realize that the fight didn't figure to be scintillating? That was the era of the lazy, fat heavyweight.

I couldn't remember where that fight was held. I knew it wasn't Las Vegas and probably in the east, but I never would have thought of Buffalo.

There's been some boxers, names etc on Boxrec over the years, but I'm not sure anyone who has actually shared a ring with a heavyweight champ has posted. Amazing.

I didn't pay a dime. Actually, I got paid that night for working in Louis Howard's & Matt & Alex Hilton's corners. Even if I hadn't been working I'd have gotten in for free with my fighter credentials for being a sparring partner.

Thanks , Jim.
Yeah, having been in the ring with the then-reigning WBA heavyweight champion before his title defense wasn't at all lost on me, but honestly, I don't bring it up too often because it takes too much effort to try to explain to people what a move around is to most people & I can't really say that I was Page's sparring partner since he wasn't hitting me back ( thank God, Lol ). Besides, providing sparring for Camacho & Matthew Hilton in the weeks leading up to the card gives me plenty to talk about.
My pro career wasn't all that I'd hoped it would be but my career as a sparring partner exceeded my biggest dreams. IOver the years I also got to work with Livingstone Bramble, Johnny Bumphis, Dave Hilton, Simon Brown & others.

Devon Alexander/Randall Bailey. One guy wouldn't throw much vs one who couldn't.

There was some IBF light middle fight tucked away on an undercard somewhere that was dire - Ishe Smith/Bundrage? One of those fights, absolutely mind numbing.

Apart from about 10 seconds in the two Juarez/John fights, they were largely devoid of entertainment too.

I was in Mexico a few years ago, and it was a dark and stormy winter night.

I searched the hundreds of cantinas fruitlessly to find a place offering the Amir Khan-Devon Alexander match.

I had feeling that it might be less than gripping, but I wanted to see it anyway.

After a few hours, I gave up. No one in the dull border town of Mexicali knew anything about Khan-Alexander.

Walking down the street I saw a bunch of bad hombres crowded around a television in a dive hotel lobby. They were watching boxeo, and yes it was Alexander-Khan.

I entered the hotel and sat down on a shredded couch. My new amigos grumbled but made room.

The bout was apparently tape-delayed since it was past midnight, but what the hell. Tape delay is better than nothing.

Well almost. What a stinker of a fight. Khan flitted around the ring, throwing fast but half hearted punches, while Alexander plodded after him, throwing next to nothing.

When the two got close to one other, both quickly tied up, apparently frightened to sample the others punch.

Most of the guys in the lobby filtered out within a few rounds, apparently disgusted by the pacifist offerings of these two gringo contenders. No Morales-Barrera tonight.

I stayed and somehow remained awake for the full 12 rounds, probably with the help of the front desk clerk who kept asking me to rent a room.

Eventually I bought him a cerveza from the cooler to shut him up, and kept watching, hoping an actual fight might break out.

It never happened. Khan won a dreary near shutout decision, and I left wondering why I tried so hard to see so little.

Leonard vs Duran III (1989).

More than 9 years after the storied Brawl in Montreal, Leonard and Duran got it on for the final time. Thank god.

Everyone knew that their best days were past, but it was painful watching these two formerly great warriors paw and grab at each other.

Leonard continued where he left off in New Orleans rematch, dancing, jabbing and letting go with some occasional flurries. But he could only dance and punch in spurts and spent a lot of time tying up Duran.

Leonard never engaged. He learned his lesson years earlier.

Duran still looked like a mean son of a bitch, but looks were deceiving this night. He was pretty docile.

He just wandered around the ring in a daze, counting the rounds down and figuring out how he was going to spend his hefty paycheck.

Leonard did receive a few cuts, his aging skin to longer able to hold up to even the very few blows Duran did manage to land. Manos de Piedras connected on a paltry 14% of his shots.

When the ho-hum 12 rounds were over, the judges gave Leonard a near shutout win.

The trilogy was complete. But not soon enough.

I saw a Lupe Pintor title defense against a guy named Jose Uziga that went 15 of the most monotonous, sleep inducing rounds that any human being could imagine. Uziga ran and ran and ran like a marathoner and didn't land a meaningful punch, which is some feat, while staying on his feet against Pintor. One judge scored it like 150-126 or something like that and I thought that was generous.

I checked. Pintor won 150-128 on one of the scorecards. Were there any knockdowns?

The other judges were a little more generous to Uziga, scoring it 148-139 and 148-136. A couple rounds to the fleeing Argentine.

Interestingly, when Pintor won the bantam title in a very controversial decision over the great Carlos Zarate, two of the judges scored it for Pintor by just one point.

The third judge saw it as a landslide for Zarate 145-133. Talk about seeing two different fights.

BTW, the maligned Jose Felix Uziga passed away last year at age 66. RIP.

Pipino,

No knockdowns, just a Groundhog Day slog of round after repetitive round of Uziga running like a frightened thief and Pintor landing just shy of what it would take to batter him down. Uziga was ungodly durable and athletic and deserved to last the distance, but Lord it was a dreadful and monotonous "fight"....
