Re: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Carlos Ocampo - June 16, 2018
I was watching some tape of Ocampo against a couple guys named Enrique Soto and Charlie Navarro.
I have to agree with jamamb and say that Ocampo isn't really true world class. Certainly not a #1 contender.
He's tall, rangy, puts punches together well, especially to the body.
He's not really a huge puncher but gets his KOs through volume. He's busy with his hands. At least against non-threatening opponents.
Ocampo can move, but it's in a galloping, jerky style. Not smooth at all.
He often keeps his hands low and can be tagged. Doesn't use his jab effectively. Despite being tall, he's most effective on the inside.
Against Navarro and Soto, it's difficult to gauge his chin. He was never hurt or shook, but those two aren't Spence.
Ocampo is the type of fighter who might have been a star on the old Solo Boxeo series, but wouldn't pass the litmus test when he moved up in class.
It's unlikely that he survives more than 4 rounds with Spence, even if Ocampo's chin turns out to be solid.

Absolutely. Have to recoup the lost sanctioning fee.

Re: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Carlos Ocampo - June 16, 2018
Spence will get the other belt holders to face him. Thurman is injured. Garcia and Porter face each other for the WBC belt. Crawford has Horn lined up. By all account the PPV for the Crawford\Horn fight isn't doing so well. Which means Arum might be tempted at a highly anticipated unification fight (assuming Crawford wins on June 9th) with Spence.
Garcia didn't want to face Thurman, but he ran out of credible options. Which is what will happen with both Porter and himself once the two of them meet.
Spence, probably, won't have to make these fights, as these fight might be making themselves.

I'd be surprised if Spence and Crawford meet up any time within the next 2 years.
They're 2 of the P4P best in the game, but at this point no one really knows them.
The money just isn't there for these quality fighters because the casuals are barely aware Spence and Crawford exist.
If they can't be guaranteed more than $50 million apiece, there's no sense in making the bout.

Why would they be guaranteed $50m each? That's too high.SenorPipino wrote: ↑04 Jun 2018, 22:40 If they can't be guaranteed more than $50 million apiece, there's no sense in making the bout.

That's my point.
If 2 of the best P4P fighters today can't get that type of money facing each other, there's no rhyme or reason to fight one another.
They deserve that number (at the least) based on talent and the in-ring excitement they bring.
But right now, and for the near term, that can't command that kind of money because they're not household names.
Let them wait it out until sometime in 2020 ( or longer) and that type of purse figures to be there.

Spence fought in January, why does he have to wait until June for this fight? I'd understand if it was a big fight, but lets be honest, he's going to be comfortable against Ocampo. Surely he could fight him in like April and then have an extra fight in the calendar year?

He probably will fight again this year.ElJefe wrote: ↑05 Jun 2018, 09:30 Spence fought in January, why does he have to wait until June for this fight? On 23rd Jan, they were given until 22nd Feb to negotiate a deal. By then, Showtime already confirmed Spence's next fight would be in June in Dallas. I suppose it's all about date availability.
In the middle of March, terms were agreed for a fight and the official press conference was on 30 April, a month and a half before the fight takes place.
So i'm thinking, negotiations and trying to reach a deal to avoid purse bids was not the reason as to why the fight is taking place in June. The reason it was in June was simply because Showtime always release their half year dates way in advance.

Betting lines have opened and Spence is not-too-surprisingly a massive favorite.
The champ is anywhere from a 1-50 to a 1-100 choice over the unbeaten, but untested, Ocampo.
But who knows? The unheralded Ocampo could turn out to be another Munguia.
Unfortunately for the Mexican contender, Spence is not another Sadam Ali.

Re: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Carlos Ocampo - June 16, 2018
He looks ripped, as he usually does.
Nothing in that photo tells me he's drained.
People often say that about a fighter during the weigh-in. That he looks gaunt and weak.
Then that fighter climbs into the ring and puts on a dominating performance.
I expect the same tonight from Spence, whether it goes 1 or 12.
Another PED insinuation? Business as usual around here.

Re: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Carlos Ocampo - June 16, 2018
Does anyone know if this is being broadcast in the UK? It seems some fights are starting to slip through the cracks over here and I cant seem to find it anywhere. Thought Sky would have picked this up. Nothing on allegedly or BT either.

Gotta love a major world title fight with one guy a 1-120 favorite.
