Re: PPV - We've never had it so good
It is glorious that we can give back to a sport that gives us so much. I buy PPVs on UDH and also shell out on the HD ones too. It makes me feel good knowing that every single penny will be pumped into an amazing regular Sky Sports show a few months down the line. Being so skint that I can only afford to buy a four pack of Oranjeboom (four for a fiver or £1.40 each depending on which off licence you visit) gives fight nights a bit of an added sense of nostaligia. If they add a few more PPVs I might be able to downgrade to White Lightning or Mad Dog 20/20. I feel like I'm 18 again.
Re: PPV - We've never had it so good
Personally I never buy ppv coz I firmly believe that my subscription is more than enough already

Well...
Free everything for everyone would be wonderful, but it’s not possible, money has to come from somewhere.
The argument that ‘I pay for sky sports and/or allegedly so I shouldn’t have to pay’ is a strange one. Subscription fees for a channel allow you to watch what is on that channel, not whatever you feel like or may wish was on there. People don’t expect to eat for free at a restaurant because they have given Tesco enough money.
I personally buy around half of the PPVs I would guess. If I want to see a contest more than I want £15 or whatever then I will buy it, if not then I won’t. I don’t stream because I value my time and stealing something to watch when I don’t value it enough to pay would be a waste of my time.
I believe as time goes by PPVs will get cheaper, but only because all sporting events will be PPV and the subscription channels will vanish. People will pay for only the football matches/F1 races/cricket/boxing etc that they want rather than a predetermined package. I suspect the payment platform is the only thing stopping it happening right now.

Not hard to find a decent quality stream however hard they try and block it. There’s also the radio.

I imagine that there’s a certain amount of ‘because they can’ but as I said, the money has to come from somewhere. Other sports either pay their way through ticket sales, sponsorship and advertising, give away content for free or aren’t shown on TV.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑20 Aug 2018, 12:34So why is it only boxing that does it? Re: PPV - We've never had it so good
Like it or not PPV has become an accepted part of boxing, largely in part because people have paid their subscription costs & then still dug into their pockets for lacklustre fights on PPV. Stands to reason that if people are prepared to pay then promoters & TV stations are going to charge.
It wouldn't be so bad if at least some of this extra money was being used to increase the normal boxing output but even that seems to be dwindling & only shown if it works as an advert for an upcoming PPV.
Personally I buy very few as it has to be a decent enough fight that I feel warrants the extra money on top of everything else I already pay per month to various channels.

Yeah, huge fights like Bellew-Cleverly 2 / Brook-Gavin / Eubank Jr-Quinlan just can’t be made without PPVleejonesjnr wrote: ↑20 Aug 2018, 14:11I imagine that there’s a certain amount of ‘because they can’ but as I said, the money has to come from somewhere. That Brook v Gavin card was one of the best ever in the UK which certainly needed PPV.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑20 Aug 2018, 15:16Yeah, huge fights like Bellew-Cleverly 2 / Brook-Gavin / Eubank Jr-Quinlan just can’t be made without PPVleejonesjnr wrote: ↑20 Aug 2018, 14:11I imagine that there’s a certain amount of ‘because they can’ but as I said, the money has to come from somewhere. The problem was it was 3 Saturday nights in one and the sky shows around that time were absolutely dire.

3 Saturday nights in one? Which 3 fights would have headlined their own card?
Brook vs. Gavin?
Gradovich vs. Selby?
Linares vs. Mitchell?

Indeed; it was Bellew-Cleverly 2 where the Sky PPV model changed.Naandrew wrote: ↑21 Aug 2018, 01:57That Brook v Gavin card was one of the best ever in the UK which certainly needed PPV.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑20 Aug 2018, 15:16Yeah, huge fights like Bellew-Cleverly 2 / Brook-Gavin / Eubank Jr-Quinlan just can’t be made without PPVleejonesjnr wrote: ↑20 Aug 2018, 14:11

If I remember correctly, Brook was supposed to be headlining his first title defence but got, ahem, injured, so Sky asked Eddie to keep the PPV with an alternative. As Eddie didn’t actually have a proper big fight he could put on, he ‘stacked’ the card with loads of his big names battering over-matched opposition. Predictably, the show was total poo but presumably sold enough to justify repeating the trick, and has now become the standard PPV model.
We’re now at the stage where Eddie happily admits he only put Whyte on PPV because he wanted to give him a big payday ffs. But unfortunately some idiots will buy whatever they’re served, so we’re stuck until people start to realise they’re being taken for mugs.
Re: PPV - We've never had it so good
It's the impact on the Saturday shows that bother me. For example allegedly and his BT shows. With Fury, Frampton and Warrington all set for PPV outings we're unlikely to see them on a standard BT show for the next 10 to 12 months. Similarly Billy Joe Saunders next fight is on SKY and with Flanagan and Tete busy in the WBSS what are we left with on a Saturday night? B and C level fights and fighters. It's exactly what has happened on SKY too. The product you used to get as a SKY Sports or BT Sport subscriber is being devalued. It's no wonder people are hacked off.
Re: PPV - We've never had it so good
I just want to watch boxing. I don't want to pay for the subscription to a sports channel...I feel like I'm paying twice. I don't want to pay to watch football etc...
With SKY and BN I got everything. Now I have to subscribe to BT too.
I'm lucky that I can afford the PPV but even then I rarely get control of the TV on Saturday nights...so I record and watch the next day. can't even do that with PPV...so now I have started not to buy some simply because I have other things on.
How do you guys watch the next day? Doesn't looking up the fight on the internet give away the result?

I haven’t done any investigation into this, but is there not simply a lot more televised boxing available now than there was ten years ago when Sky Sports was more or less the only channel screening it?

ITV was still involved in boxing in 2008. Primetime from 2009. Setanta were still a going concern. There were still a few ways of paying extra money to watch fights.leejonesjnr wrote: ↑21 Aug 2018, 08:12 I haven’t done any investigation into this, but is there not simply a lot more televised boxing available now than there was ten years ago when Sky Sports was more or less the only channel screening it?

As I say I haven't researched (and I am unlikely to bother) but I suspect there is significantly more televised boxing available now.

While it probably seems that there is more televised boxing I'm not 100% sure that is the case. We used to have weekly Sky fight nights but there has been a serious slowing down over the past year and the ones we get now are more like infomercials for the PPVs. ITV4 also used to have regular fight nights back then instead of this ITV PPV nonsense. In theory we probably do have more access as long as you and your family only eat once a day and you take on a second job.leejonesjnr wrote: ↑21 Aug 2018, 09:02Any idea what the show v show comparison is when compared to the combination of Sky, BT, allegedly, ITV Box Office etc that is available now?Terry Dooley wrote: ↑21 Aug 2018, 08:43ITV was still involved in boxing in 2008. Free Events:
The Olympic 100m Final
Wimbledon Final
Champions League Final
The Rugby World Cup Final

PPV:
Eubank Jr vs Yildirim
Bellew's ego vs Haye's ankle
Cleverly vs Bellew
Haye vs Harrison
Whyte vs Parker (the Everton vs Swansea of Boxing there)
who remembers Khan vs McCluokey?
Mayweather vs someone who's not a boxer
Wasn't the last Callum Smith fight PPV?
