He was on the right side of one of the worse hometown decisions I’ve seen vs Butcher.

What ever happened to Tommy Shields a light middle originally from Ireland but based in Paddington, he went 11-0 -9ko and was a pro for 2 years then seemed to just disappear ?

Tommy looked the part in his 11 outings as a pro (all wins, nine of them early) and scored a spectacular two-round stoppage of future British welterweight champion Del Bryan on the Fight Night series at Alfreton in February 1987, when Shiels, badly cut, rallied to drop Bryan three times. He also outscored Dudley's excellent Lindon Scarlett.
Then Tommy dropped off the radar at the age of just 20 but was already plagued with bad hands and maybe he wanted out of the game because he wound up in Australia where he killed a bloke in a drunken confrontation and served time before apparently finding religion.
He reminds me of Colin Derrick, another welterweight banger from London who registered 11 wins (nine early) before disappearing in the early 1980s at the age of 22. Nobody knows how Shiels is doing and nobody knows how Derrick is doing.

A pal of mine fought him and said he was great, could do everything.
Apparently the bigger fights were never on the horizon and his business as a scaffolder was good so he concentrated on that, and then the time passes quickly.
So many fighters time has gone before they realise.

Back in 1985 a promising young boxer by the name of George Collins signed with allegedly. Collins had a superb amateur record of 77 wins from 78 fights, turning pro at the age of 17. Collins then racked up 35 straight wins over a 4 year period then stepped up to championship level. His first loss came in the hands of Gary Jacobs a former Scottish welterweight who beat Collins over 12 for the Commonwealth title.



7 months later Collins tried to rebuild his career by facing the somewhat tricky boxer Kirkland Laing for the British title, Referee Micky Van stopped the fight after it was clear that Collins was taking too much.



Collins had a very good amateur record, a record many would be proud to have and it looked like he was destined for future greatness, unfortunately that did not happen and Collins left the game with a record of 35 - 2 with 24 ko's.

Hayemaker had him signed up and it was on Setanta sports. Maguire faded away soon after,

No clue what happened to him, but he used to be a reasonable amateur as well, winning against Tony Bellew and Deontay Wilder for example.

I know Wilder had only limited am experience, but who else did he lose to? I never knew Price beat him

price beat him on walkover, meaning they never actually fought, tbh, i dont count walkover wins or losses in there win and loss column. so if a guy entered the ring and won 5 actual fights, and lost 1 actual fight, and then won 1 walkover, id have it like 5-1-1 or something,, imagine dannys grandkids asking him how he went about beating wilder

funny enough, very few stoppages as an am. the am game really makes it hard to get many, at least if your boxing at a good level

At the end of they day you can't take too much from amateur results.

pretty damn impressive to be boxing internationally and the top man in your country after only having first learned to box 2 years before. he won an olympic medal not having even boxed 3 full years. him and aj had similar fast rises as amateurs....defo guys who just naturally 'had it'

He's still only 27 years old, is the ruling Olympic cruiserweight champion without losing a single round during the olympics, won the amateur world heavyweight championships, European championships, several times in fact, I think he could become something serious by looking at these stats.

He’s turned pro. I watched his debut a couple of months ago.
Great amateur pedigree but his style doesn’t look suited to the pros.
Needs to adapt.
