Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
Most purses aren't reported which is maybe why most people overestimate it.
Cleverly got $100k as champion v Jack on the PBF undercard. Jack only got $750k.
If Fielding got a million he already has retirement money and should be in Eddies debt.
Cleverly's money is more top whack for a typical world title defence, a lot ore on much less.

Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
i heard clevs real payment was actually more like 400-500k . a lot of times for non american fighters especially the 'offical' purse reported by the commission in the us isnt the full thing. happens regularly for mexican fighters fighting in the us too, salido and jhonny being examples i know of

lomas side doesnt seem to be entertaining the crolla fight much. i dont know how it will end up with the sanctioning bodies but they clearly want the commey-chaniev winner for the ibf, then it seems berchelt for later in the year. much rather have that then ant so i hope lomas side get there way
Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
I hope they get their way too
Crollas a decent fella, but has no business being in there with Loma

Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
It's a good deal/opportunity for the fighter but it's not great for the fans as we know what's gonna happen before they're even in the ring!
Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
Just checking it was $30k
But of course if we are talking in pound notes and after expenses, he will see £12k.
And this ladies and gentlemen is the reality of boxing. If you are adding this type of money to your wage it's nice, but in itself even at this level it's not a wage in itself.
Fielding has had a proper touch.
As I mentioned before Cleverly as champion in a top show getting top whack was $100k before expenses.
Precious few fighters earn anything in boxing that could contribute to your retirement, it is a contribution to your existing salary.

Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
British fighters have never really excelled in world title fights in America (with a few exceptions). When Alan Minter outscored Vito Antuofermo for the world middleweight title in Las Vegas in March 1980, he was the first Brit to win a world title in the States since Jack "Kid" Berg in 1917, which says it all. Dave "Boy" Green never stood a chance against Sugar Ray Leonard in Maryland in 1980, and Maurice Hope was also thrown to the wolves against Wilfred Benitez in Las Vegas a year later, even as defending champion. Both Brits picked up big paydays but were badly knocked out. John Conteh suffered five knockdowns in his rematch with Matthew Saad Muhammad in 1980 before he was rescued in round four but he gave the Philadelphian a great battle in their first encounter in Atlantic City, dropping a narrow decision. However, Conteh was special. Dennis Andries ventured to Detroit in 1987 to face local man Tommy Hearns and took a prolonged beating. That was a terrible match.

Alex Stewart vs Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson and Michael Moorer.
Though Stewart actually lived in the US

I have feeling Hearn and Gallagher know that and are expecting Crolla to fight for a vacant belt in the spring.jamamb wrote: ↑16 Dec 2018, 19:16 lomas side doesnt seem to be entertaining the crolla fight much. i dont know how it will end up with the sanctioning bodies but they clearly want the commey-chaniev winner for the ibf, then it seems berchelt for later in the year. much rather have that then ant so i hope lomas side get there way

Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
I think we all know that Cleverly will have got more than $100k from avenues outside of the released purse. Just the same as Callum Smith and Luke Campbell did not fight for free on the undercard of Brook v Porter as was reported.

Very poor performance. Never really wanted to be in there from the first bell.
Don’t body shots hurt more than head shots?

Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
You won’t get a tougher assignment than British Champ Andy Holligan getting sent over to Mexico to take on Julio Cesar Chavez.
Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
George Jupp getting a shot at Miguel Berchelt on Mexico was a pretty one sided affair. Don't think he's fought since.
Edit:
Actually he has 2 wins but nothing since Feb 17.

Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
I didn’t say domestic level. He was a paper world champ....headlining shows or chief support would take him 4+ fights to earn that money...you’ve only got to look at the companies these guys set up for (ahem) tax purposes to see how much they get

Although not a title shot John L Gardner vs Michael Dokes was pretty brutal.
Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
Gardner was actually given a chance against Dokes because the American, though unbeaten, went through a spell in his career when he looked a bit 'iffy'. He was held to a draw by the cagey Ossie Ocasio and struggled to outscore the face-first Tex Cobb before suddenly hitting hard, stopping Ocasio quickly in a rematch and also blowing away Lynn Ball. Hindsight tells us that Dokes had matured and was coming into his own but hindsight comes after the event.Old bones Ian wrote: ↑20 Dec 2018, 02:23 Although not a title shot John L Gardner vs Michael Dokes was pretty brutal.
Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
Suppose Kirkland Laing qualifies although he didn't read the script !
Re: British boxers taken to sacrificial altar in USA
You're right. Harry Mullan was up in arms about the match and people were writing into BN and saying it was going to be another Pintor-Owen. Undaunted, Mickey Duff went ahead with the fight and had worked out that Duran didn't like movers and Laing was nothing if not a great mover. However, Duff got it wrong a year later when he pitched Laing in with Fred Hutchings, so you win one, you lose one.
