He seems to have gained popularity now that he's been knocked off his perch as the UK's top promoter, we all love an underdog don't we but no more than a few years ago he was doing what Hearn was and was slated just as much on these forums - Khan PPV's, WBU reigns of terror etc.
absolutely.
We never like the ones in power. And we never believe what they tell us on the telly box!
This forum is good, but you have to sift through the paranoia, toward the current power brokers, and sentimentality over yesterday’s. There is a huge level of resentment over anything in a position of power, or that represents the establishment.
Plenty of bad days and good, due to Warren. Many of the current posters would’ve abhorred him, 10-15 years ago.
Personally I enjoyed the warren era. There was a sense of ridiculousness that is lacking from today's promotions. I wasn't adverse to the odd knockover job either, so I could get some shut eye early doors
In all seriousness, if you listed the 30 best boxing nights in the uk, it's likely warren was involved with a good 20 if not more. Lacy vs calzaghe, Gomez vs Arthur, Bruno vs McCall,Hatton vs KT, calzaghe vs Kessler, benn vs McClellan, Eubank vs Thompson, the naz era.... bringing Tyson over..... yes he could pad a record like a motherfucker and put on a shocker of a match up, but he also delivered some great nights. Ultimately all promoters are arseholes, it doesn't take long to work that out. Hearn is starting to deliver a few anal bananas himself lately.
There’s no question FW delivered some good shows but it seems when people think of his shows from 10-20 years ago they do it through rose-tinted specs.
Some of those fights you mention were good but firstly they, more often than not, had extremely poor undercards. Check out the undercard for Hatton vs Tszyu. Or Calzaghe vs Kessler - a great main event but woeful undercard. Compare that with Joshua vs Parker - another unification fight but I would argue a much better undercard.
We seem to forget all his poor cards (Calzaghe headlined against Bika albeit with a decent undercard and Manfredo Jr after beating Lacy). I don’t think that kind of match making would be accepted now.
Also look at the Khan vs Prescott PPV. The opponent in the fight was someone very few of us had heard of and in the fights before this Khan had been fighting for the Commonwealth title. There was one competitive fight on the undercard - Alex Arthur vs Nicky Cook. I know there are far too many PPVs nowadays but are any of the Sky PPVs of recent years worse than that? I would argue not.
I personally don’t have any respect for FW as a person. He’s been involved in legal proceedings with at least 6 boxers (and even IFLTV) just in recent years and many more before that. He’s had several claims of late payment for fights and has also gone into administration several times and avoided paying what he’s owed to people.
I’m not a huge fan of Eddie but Matchroom have never gone into administration to avoid paying someone, have always paid what’s due on time and, as far as I’m aware, haven’t taken any boxers to court.
