Joke Calzaghe! Seven Weeks Away and No Joe Foe!
7 weeks on Saturday and Joe Calzaghe will be fighting... errr... err.... beats me!!!! what the hell is the deal here??? Beyer... Joppy... Kessler... Mundine/Green winner... the Contender loser guy... Green, ... Miranda... Andrade... and now allegely Glen Johnson????? I've already got my tickets (fourth row! Hell yeah!) because of Skelton WilliamsII but this is embarrassing for Joe... didn't Warren ripp Hobson apart for not having a Ricky opponent nine weeks out? Didn'tWarren rip on Hobson for linking Hatton with all those names and not delivering them....in a DIRECT comparision with Hobson, Warren is already looking bad here... I mean, Joe is the udercard dude in his own backyard...

As long as they get the choice right I'm happy to wait.Paul Powler wrote:7 weeks on Saturday and Joe Calzaghe will be fighting... errr... err.... beats me!!!! what the hell is the deal here??? Re: Joke Calzaghe! Seven Weeks Away and No Joe Foe!
At least Hatton was being linked with decent names and they were trying to get him in with a good name. Who the hell has Calzaghe been linked with for this fight? Nobody decent, I've not seen him linked with Kessler. They have considered Joppy, Allan Green, Manfredo, Miranda, Andrade hardly a who's who of boxing is it?Paul Powler wrote:7 weeks on Saturday and Joe Calzaghe will be fighting... errr... err.... beats me!!!! what the hell is the deal here??? But if Kessler is not on the menu by 2007, Calzaghe should be ashamed of himself. Joe has spent years fighting handpicked foes and it appears that nothing has changed because I have never even heard him say the name Mikkel Kessler
Calzaghe clearly is near the tail end of his career and wants to fight someone with either a) a big reputation or b) a light heavyweight title or c) who will be a good money fight
my guess is he fights a fight like Miranda (tough fighter, but moving up) to pave the way for Beyer (3x champ who after Calzaghe is the longest reigning current s/m champ). then, i reckon he'll pursue Woods, who is bigger and more versatile than Kessler and has the IBF light heavy title
by then woods will have beaten johnson, and will have a solid international reputation. and tarver and hopkins will probably retire
how busy has kessler been, how many title defenses has he made? apart from mundine and siaca, who'd he beat of worth?
why shold he be ashamed with wins over Reid, Eubank, Starie, Woodhall, Mkrtchain, Brewer, Mitchell, Sheika and Lacy? work out the mathematics, that means he's faced a solid fighter or a world beater just about every other fight, really shameful
don't get me wrong, Kessler's going to be an outstanding champion, but let's see if Kessler is definitely something special. if he can beat Bute, Andrade, etc my hunch will be confirmed

Boxingchat had this to say on the matter.Kevo wrote:Whoever could you have in ming Pundit?![]()
I'd be interested to here what Boxingchat has to say on this subject.
That was May 10th.No one wants to fight him at present. All pricing themselves out of it or saying they want no part of JC after the Lacy fight. . Should be an announcement by the end of the week or maybe the beginning of next.
Clinton Woods should have took the £400k he was offered
Talking about boxingchat, I've noticed Lirva has finally been banned, good stuff John

"Overpriced himself" ..
For how many hears haven't we heard that excuse.
Why is it that calzaghe has never given Kessler an offer when he has given many inferior fighters offers? Lately he even gave Beyer another offer.
I think the answer is pretty straightforward... Joe isn't too keen on fighting Kessler.

fight negotaitions are never a straight forward situation - there is always accusation and counter accusation when talks break down/never commence.
Smoke and mirrors are the name of the game here, with both sides trying to discredit one another.
For all his failings in terms of getting career defining fights, I dont think Calzaghe himself would be at all fearful of facing ANY 12stoner; its all down to the money, timing and risk/reward ratios.
I am sure JC would box Kessler in June if the fight could be made but its managers, egos and vested interests that get in the way of sportsmen doing what they are paid to.

Yeah kind of, except Kessler probably has the stones to get in the ring with Joe. I never saw any indication that Ottke wanted any part of a fight with Joe. I think he might have given Joe problems, depending on what kind of judge was appointed, but I always felt Joe would find a way to get to him and hammer him, and certainly wanted to see someone hammer the soporific one to the canvas.

It depends on WHEN they would have fought. People forget that Ottke and Calzaghe peaked at different times. Ottke peaked in 1999/2000 - this was the Ottke who toyed with Glen Johnson in the second half of their bout, who schooled Branco, and who made easy work of Brewer in their refight. In my book this was a pfp fighter, at least top 20 - almost perfect in what he was doing, and very hard to beat for any opponent. Calzaghe, in contrast, was still a bit edgy and one-dimensional - remember his struggles with Robin Reid.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Yeah kind of, except Kessler probably has the stones to get in the ring with Joe. But thereafter Ottke's legs slowed, making him much less effective; and Calzaghe became more complete and rounded. He's peaking NOW, six years after Ottke. Against Lacy he showed infighting skills that I had never seen from him before. From 2001/02 I'd pick Calzaghe over Ottke; and Calzaghe-Ottke in 2003 - which is when Calzaghe started calling Ottke out - would arguably have been a pretty one-sided affair.

Ottke was very effective at what he did, but at times it was bordering on simply running away around the ring, I watched his fight with Larssen, and Ottke spent large periods of the fight doing nothing but wheeling round the ring feinting with the jab. Hideous style to watch, and it's not like I hate fancy dans. I love watching technical boxing, but Ottke's style was the stuff of nightmares.

Yeah, but Larsen was the way-past-his-prime Ottke. The prime Ottke could run AND conterpunch, in-out before the opponent realized what had happened. The past-prime Ottke could only run OR counterpunch, and he normally opted for running.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Ottke was very effective at what he did, but at times it was bordering on simply running away around the ring, I watched his fight with Larssen, and Ottke spent large periods of the fight doing nothing but wheeling round the ring feinting with the jab. Who Joe is fighting? , but he shouldn't worry - he can come out now. He has made sure that everyone else already has an opponent - so he can just pick some random guy. He made the Eubank-win last 8 years, so he will probably make the Lacy-win last another 3 or so years untill he retires... undefeated. hurrah.....

they definitely peaked at different times. or, you could say, ottke got very old all of a sudden in 2003. i still don't think larsen beat him, which many ppl do.pundit wrote:It depends on WHEN they would have fought. ottke had nightmares with johnson, i had him barely scraping by but definitely winning
