Michael Katz
Michael Katz
Can anybody tell me what website Michael Katz is currently writing for? Always enjoyed reading his articles when he wrote for Max Boxing. Also, anybody know why he left MB?
Sorry, found it. He's at the Sweet Science for anybody interested in his articles...

He's a right miserable old fornicator. I sent him an email once (as a fellow contributor to maxboxing), and he sent me an email back saying "I don't do penpals."
Fat brace wearing old fuckwit. I don't really like his articles that much either. Too many in jokes and americanisms which don't translate well.

Yeah that doesn't surprise me too much. I don't think he cares whom he offends but the guy has a lot of respect (with regards to his work) and he does call things as he sees them. I agree there are a lot of Americanisms in his writing but I still usually find them amusing.jamesmcdonnell wrote:He's a right miserable old fornicator. Yes just about my favorite boxing writer these days, although he can be a pompous old git at times that's true!
Yesterdays article for example, speaking about his fellow writers:
"One of the silliest arguments made by these colleagues – note, I do not refer to them as peers."
Still, he sucks up to no one and has a great style of writing - BIG loss for maxboxing no doubt about that...and a real result for sweetscience: and they publish all their articles FOC, unlike MAX and the very bad kiss arse boxingtalk.
They must have some serious cash behind them to bring so many big names on board at sweetscience ( Kimball, Ken Jones, Schuyler - recently lost the great Pat Putnam too ).
One of the top sites now I reckon.

I actually also like Steve Kim & Doug Fischer, although Fischer tends to get a little bit carried away with publishing his own praises in his mailbags, particularly when it relates to some of the nonsense exchanges he engages in, which are similar to what you'd expect to see in the Current Scene forum.
i've enjoyed probst, his work has got much better this past year. don't like that rodriguez guy, i think he was a former shithouseboxing blogger. the compubox guy is good, groves. don't like brian adams, he can't write anything unless bernard hopkins tells him some kind of moral talejamesmcdonnell wrote:I like Jason Probst, nice simple style, good insights, not so much waffle.
best american writers are greg smith, lotierzo, charles farrell. boxingranks.com was the best fornicating site ever
can't stand katz. his byrd/mosley hugging, his anti-lewis garbage; he does know a fair bit of inside stuff and can write, but he pisses me off. pedro fernandez said his neck brace smells like piss. toney once pulled his brace of and wafted the "stanky ass thing" around a gym

Frank Lotierzo is a really nice guy, used to speak to him via email an awful lot when I wrote for Eastside boxing, really knows his stuff. Not the greatest in terms of actual command of English, but a wealth of knowledge.
Steve and Doug engage in their own online personas a wee bit too much, but that's the nature of a webzine I guess.
Tom Gerbasi's stuff is good, generally free from personal bias too.

yes, frank's stuff is great in content but not the best spelling, grammar etc. he did some great articles on jimmy young, just after young died. he actually did a lot of sparring in philadelphia, with mike spinks and dwight qawi.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Frank Lotierzo is a really nice guy, used to speak to him via email an awful lot when I wrote for Eastside boxing, really knows his stuff. problem with kim is he has to tell you what frigging CD he's listening to, as if anyone cares.

Kim is also obsessed with american collegiate sports.viciousmaussa wrote: problem with kim is he has to tell you what frigging CD he's listening to, as if anyone cares.
If he wants to write aboutt ALU v ACL or whatever the frig it is then find a website that caters for those sports - they mean nothing to me!
Probst, who also does good stuff on MMA, and Gerbasi are two of the best.
Groves comes off as an obsessive complusive statto.

I've never seen the video, but I'm sure most people sitting opposite Tyson are going be on their best behaviour, unless they fancy being dangled out a window with their pants round their ankles!Twinkle Toes wrote:Katz doesnt suck up to anyone?
Oh my, that made me laugh. Did you not watch his his video interviews with Tyson - there was some major browning of the nose going on there.
I prefer our own breed of internet writers, such as Ant Evans & Ian McNeilly etc

I imagine that Katz himself smells of wee and that his beard is a home to thousands of morsels from meals he can scarcely remember.viciousmaussa wrote: can't stand katz. his byrd/mosley hugging, his anti-lewis garbage; he does know a fair bit of inside stuff and can write, but he pisses me off. pedro fernandez said his neck brace smells like piss. toney once pulled his brace of and wafted the "stanky ass thing" around a gym
Hos love-in with Byrd is a bit creepy but generally his writing is enjoyable, if a bit pompous

Yes that's a strange pick, but to be fair he's usualy quite good in his tips - he said both Collazo and Juarez were worth a bet, and he wasn't far wrong.states wrote:I think Katz has lost the plot. Tipping Byrd to KO Wlad in 7? Erm.... Oh, and whilst he doesn't like Hatton's chances against Castillo, Cotto, Coralles, Mayweather etc, he seems to fancy him against Margarito. Surely that's a horrible matchup for Ricky?
But yes, the Byrd pick was just plain daft. He's obviously madly in love with the Byrd clan, as well as Johnny Bos and John Hornewer.
Tom Gerbasi is excellent and so is Fischer ( stay clear of his mail bag though )
i think margarito was his 'concession'. i.e. 'according to my wisdom gatti, merryweather, castillo, corrales will ALL beat hatton, so i'll give you margarito'. which is a silly statement, especially based on a fight with collazo, who would've killed gatti and made anyone look bad.states wrote:I think Katz has lost the plot. what made me want to puke was 'collazo landed 3 punch combinations. mayweather might land 8'
For someone so highly respected he talks a lot of shit sometimes. Noticed his dig at Hatton claiming the 1st round knockdown was a result of Hatton holding Collazo's neck down with one hand and hitting him with the other..if he'd bothered to check the tape before spouting such crap he'd see he was totally wrong. Guess integrity doesn't matter when you've got yet another non-american fighter to bash in your column.
Also the love for Chris Byrd goes way OTT.
that goes for Mayweather as well. Let Ricky Hatton fight the guy coming off a loss to Tszyu (Mitchell) and the guy coming off a loss to Baldomir (Judah) and see how much P4P #1 love he gets from Katz..
ON the subject of Max can someone let me know when doug fischer has removed those idiotic, child-crafted 'Icheehuahua' cartoons from his mailbag please? I'll tune in and start reading it again then.

boxingranks was my first boxing site I ever looked at around the 1999/2000 - it was thriving back then, great articles and a huge forum. Its a shame the forum got spammed so it had to close for a large period and a bigger shame the articles site of things slowed right down - due to commitment problems.viciousmaussa wrote:i've enjoyed probst, his work has got much better this past year. don't like that rodriguez guy, i think he was a former shithouseboxing blogger. the compubox guy is good, groves. don't like brian adams, he can't write anything unless bernard hopkins tells him some kind of moral talejamesmcdonnell wrote:I like Jason Probst, nice simple style, good insights, not so much waffle.

The forum is still quality, if small. Aticle side of things is starting to pick up aswell - although there have been one or two bad pieces I have read there.
I have to admit, I am more of a fan of the ticker tape style sites just like Fightnews and the BBC site... Its only really the British stuff that I want the big detail on - and BBN suits me fine in that respect.
I certainly wouldn't pay to read an article just because the writing is better, if I know the results from fightnews (and its so quick and easy to view) then great.
