I'm really surprised that more people picked Sanchez so far than any of the others!! I really think if Salvador hadnt died at 23 that he would have eventually faced Chavez since they were close in age and weight. As a world-class boxer-puncher I'm convinced Sanchez would have outboxed JCC much like Randall & DeLaHoya did. His wins over Azumah & Gomez were phenomenal. :OhYes:

You men are all wrong. The question and poll asks who is the greatest "fighter", so, not limited to boxers, the greatest Mexican fighter of all time is: Poncho Villa.

I thought I remembered someone saying that there was a way to change your answer but I cannot remember what it was (or who it was who said it). But now that you made your intentions known, we can just mentally add an extra vote to the 5 that show Sanchez as the GOAT!! :TU:

Size probably has a lot to do with it. A lot of people just aren't as aware of Bantamweights. Also, you could make a strong case that Zarate is better than Olivares, and he fought in the same weight class.

I picked Marquez, He is my favorite. I could make a case for Chavez but I will just go with my favorite. I have only seen Salvador Sanchez fight once on tape and that was against Azumah Nelson. I was more impressed with Azumah although Freddie Pacheco and others claim Salvador Sanchez the greatest Mexican fighter ever he was a little before my time.

Canelo is way far away from the greats for me maybe 4th on the list, although my respect for Canelo has grown as he has fought many great fighters, even if he gets some advantages here and there.

Not by me. I regard him with Zarate as probably the greatest among Mexicans.

I think that in the Olivares era, he wasn't really seen by most fans. His fights were pretty much only televised in Mexico.

Growing up in Southern California I was very familiar with El Puas since he became a huge favorite at the Forum in the 60s and 70s.

But I suspect that for most of the country, Olivares was just a name in your newspaper's agate type boxing results.

Your last sentence hits the nail on the head. Add to that the fact that because most of Ruben Olivares' title fights were on the West Coast, those of us who grew up back East didnt even get the results in our newspapers since the last edition went to print BEFORE the fights out West were completed!! :verysad:

I watched him on UHF Boxeo Professionale as a kid in NY. They were always showing fights from the forum and other locales. All the great fighters at BW; FW; LW; etc. That's how I learned so much about them. Must've shown fights three times a week or more.
