Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
Mancini would win about KO8
No offense to O'Grady I absolutely loved watching the guy especially when he became a commentator even for Art Dore's Toughman Contest on FX but his record consisted of Oklahoma scrubs by and large.
His high rating was strictly because of his old man who not only promoted but managed and trained large stables of fighters--- mostly tiersmen & journeymen who he fed to Monte Masters, Wimpy Halstead, Bobby Crabtree, and his son--- and owned an organization (the defunct WAA title).
He was 29-0-0 before losing to Danny Lopez in the 4th round. Then he fought 38 times against complete bums, winning the USBA title over Arturo Leon (22-17-2) in a fifteen round decision. That was 1979. The following year Jim Watt cleans his clock in the 12th. The next year he decisions Hilmer Kenty over 15 to win the WBA title, only to lose it to Andy Ganigan by 2nd round knockout.
Compare that to Mancini... 19 fights and becomes a top contender winning the NABF title and has a helluva war with Alexis Arguello losing in the 14th round... The following year he wins the title and defends it 4 times (plus 2 non-title bouts) including the brutal battle with Deuk-Koo Kim & Bobby Chacon. Then he has two wars with Livingstone Bramble, then loses a split decision to Hector Camacho.
I change my mind... Mancini kayos O'Grady in the 5th... He's too tough and too good for Bubblegum... He's a completely different kind of fighter well outside of O'Grady's level.

Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
I don't see how anyone could disagree with your points. Mancini by tko mid rounds is spot on.
Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
I don't think Jim watt cleaned his clock! I remember watching that fight as a kid and it was a bloody attritional affair.
Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
Mancini would ko him though obvs

Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
Saying Watt cleaned his clock is the kind of comment makes me assume he didn't watch the fight. O'Grady gave Watt loads of problems. Without the cut he could have won that fight.
Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
Mancini would stop him in 7-8 round
Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
I do recall watt being really lucky. He was struggling and there was a clash of heads and o Grady had a brutal gash. That's how I remember it anyway.

Agreed. And Sean was a decent fighter, just not Ray's level.HomicideHenry wrote: ↑13 May 2019, 19:49 Mancini would win about KO8

Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
It was incredibly controversial, O'Grady was winning. Watt cleaned Howard's clock. I agree that Mancini wins, but O'Grady was a step above a gatti type that couldn't fight at that level. Kenty was very good when Sean beat him up.
Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
Hometown ref let Watt get away with a lot of roughhousing and the scoring at the time of the stoppage was out of whack. O'Grady was a great watch, but I agree that he loses to Boom Boom.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑14 May 2019, 20:49 It was incredibly controversial, O'Grady was winning. Watt cleaned Howard's clock. Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
I agree Mancini wins. But also O’Grady was winning the Watt fight. He didn’t lose the WBA title to Ganigan. He was stripped for not fighting Claude Noel of all people. Lost to Hawaiian Punch and Verderosa consecutively I believe. Non title affairs (waa not counting)
Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
Mancini was far above O'Grady (who I loved to watch). Mid to late TKO.

I would never pick Gatti over Ray, so I don't know what you are referring to. Mancini is one of my favorite fighters of all time.

Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
I'd pick Mancini over Gatti, yes. Levels? Nah. That's a UK term. Gatti was a tough SOB. It would be a war while it lasted. I could see picking Gatti too just because of size.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑19 Jul 2019, 17:42No poo? My bad, I had a discussion with someone I thought was you that Mancini was levels above gatti.

Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
I don't see where O'Grady is winning at the time of the stoppage.
From Watt's perspective: referee: Raymond Baldeyrou 109-105 | Harry Gibbs 108-104 | Arthur Mercante 104-103 -- it looks to me like the first post that said Watt was kicking his butt is correct one; judge wise only Mercante has it close but for Watt, for two of the judges the fight is already out of reach by decision for O'Grady (save a KD); but I didn't watch the fight.

Perhaps you should? Ever see escalera/Everett? If you didn't reading those scores and forming an opinion could embarrass you.APerno wrote: ↑19 Jul 2019, 17:50 I don't see where O'Grady is winning at the time of the stoppage.

Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
it looks to me like you're a fricken idiot trying to assess fights from a scorecard, in favour of a dude in his own home town, when you haven't seen the fricken fight. ffs
Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
Wow you are insulting me because I interpreted scores./statistics -- I said I didn't see the fight so that would be understood, but never the less you had to insult me anyway by pointing out I didn't see the fight.
You two need to build a little confidence in yourselves; you are the ones embarrassing yourselves.

Re: Ray Mancini versus Sean O'Grady
Let's just analyse this thread a little.
We have yet another tedious debate about which boxer from one era would have beaten another boxer from a different era.
Not only are these debates polluting a sub-forum that is supposed to be about ACTUAL boxing history but this particular one shows why these endless diatribes are so monotonous and uninteresting.
We have just had counterpuncher calling a fellow contributor an idiot for trying to assess an ACTUAL contest from a scorecard when he didn't even see the "fricken fight". He is doing this to support his theory about a contest for which there was no scorecard because there never was a "fricken fight" in the first place.
We then have APerno responding to what he sees as an insult. In other words, they are squabbling about something that never actually happened in the first place. The thread has degenerated into a petty argument.
For heaven's sake, will you take this repetitive claptrap, for which there are endless similar examples, to the newly-created Mythical Fights sub-forum and leave the rest of us, who actually want to talk about REAL boxing history, in peace
