Is the Wincobank style inherently boring?

Post by JimStone »

Other than Naz with his nuclear power and a couple of fighters with excitingly vulnerable chins are there (m)any other examples of Wincobank boxers that weren't boring to watch? Ryan Rhodes to some extent but who else?

I don't know if that is fair, they are defensively minded, but maybe Nelson, Witter and Galahad have given them a bad name. They have also been in plenty of good fights too but when up against it they are safety first.

Kell Brook in his prime was a good watch.

Btw, I am not slagging the style in terms of its effectiveness. Hatton avoided Witter for a reason, for example.

Early on good domestic and area level fighters that came from there were quite conventional..I.e. mick mills,Pete bennet, Walter Clayton, Brian Anderson, chris Walker to name but a few. Since then and after bomber, predominantly, looking from the outside they are more box/punchers erring on the side of caution. John Keaton tbf had some real humdingers and will tell you himself he was no defensive master. Jon thaxton also came for a go most times. If the right kid with the right attributes take to this style of boxing and coaching it is devastatingly effective

Yes, the reason being he had built his career on exciting, action packed fights and entertaining people. He avoided it as it would always be a stinker

I loved watching Herol Graham - his dismantling of Mark Kaylor was very entertaining. Granted, there are only a few boxers with the natural ability to pull it off.

I don't know if it's the style, or just against certain opponents. But when they stink a place out, they REALLY do it.

I was going to write part way through the fight that I think it’s a style that requires big power to be able to make the step to genuine World title winning level.

Witter had big power in the lead up to an during his World title run. Naz we know about and Bomber nearly got there.

Fidel Castro Smith was good. I think the Wincobank style is
more awkward than boring.

Agreed, that style with the ko punch was ok,although to be fair Bomber Graham nearly always went for the stoppage/ko and paid the price,Witter against Harris was good, against Bradley was terrible.

Except when he fought Porter. He clinched non stop in that fight. Very ugly fight to watch.

I've got bored of watching Liam Williams banging everyone out since he moved to Wincobank.

i wouldnt say its boring, i think alot of it stems from Johnny Nelson's fight with de leon, but that was more to do with Nelsons nerves and confidence then the style its self.

He doesn't have what most people would fairly describe as the Wincobank style, does he.

I'm talking about those built there from being kids.

I loved Herol Graham, and it would be harsh to call Naz boring......

I agree with this on the whole, when they can’t hurt their opponent it can lead to very messy, scrappy fights., Even Naz was really boring when he couldn’t hurt someone - Soto, McCullough, Calvo.

Is it a 'Wincobank Style' or did Herol move it there from Nottingham?

No I definitely wouldn't call it boring. It can be used both well for attack and defence. Ultimately it's down to the fighter how he goes about using it. Rhodes used the style very effectively and was in some great fights to watch

I find the fighters now days who are trained under Dominick switch far less than the Brendan trained fighters.

Naz, Witter and Eesham Pickering we’re switching 4 or 5 times a round usually.

Not sure if it has changed since Brendan's days, but that no head shot sparring is/was the issue. So defensively minded and just looking to avoid at all costs taking a head shot.

They've certainly had fighters who've not fitted the mould...... Kell Brook certainly never fought like a traditional Ingle fighter - don't think he was elusive enough and had a fantastic jab..... and yes those with KO power are usually exciting - but were known to have dull ones - Naz and Ryan Rhodes spring to mind.

Very effective, but also very frustrating - Gallahad looked frightened of taking any shots at the weekend.
