It's got nothing to do with football though
A lot of boxers do use their local football team to help with support. Why all these local stadium fights? They then get on the pitch at half time etc..

Warrington is just like the Leeds supporters because he is one.

Bellew and Everton.

They’re trying with Cal Smith and Anfield.

Frampton and Windsor Park, but that had nothing to do with an actual football team.

Brook and Sheffield UTD.

Imagine having someone support your boxing career because you support the same football team. Football is by far the biggest sport in the UK.

Most boxers use that to their advantage.
Yeah, no I get totally what you're saying and you're right but it's a completely different situation in Glasgow, which is divided along the same lines as the north of Ireland

Your club (or your colour... blue/green/orange/whatever) represents your (VERY STRONG) religious and political beliefs. And if you represent one side of the city, you're pretty much hated by the other

Not such a good idea up here though. If there are pubs you can’t drink in because of your background then it’s a pretty shite idea to go running your mouth on Football/Religion (both the same up here all too often). Burns played this far better than Taylor has and Taylor is twice the fighter

Yeah thats right. Also if edinburgh had a similar type arena as the hydro i doubt taylor would ever come over to glasgow!

Anyway ill watch this on tv. Could be a clean sweep for linares given how easily he dealt with crolla and how easy indongo dealt with burns at home

I am unsure now due to Linares's last fight (was that a blip, higher weight and all?), maybe Rickster has more of a chance than I thought. If it was Pre-Loma, I would given him zero chance.

I really like this fight. It feels like both are pretty much in the last chance saloon so there feels like there's a lot riding on it - just like a proper crossroads fight should.

Of course in boxing today further opportunities are often merely granted rather than earned so you never know what might unfold afterwards. I just hope the fight doesn't get tarnished by something like an interim world title tag etc. That 'stain' would actually reduce my interest in the fight. Anyone else ever feel that way?

On boxers and their football teams Lewis Ritson is another - always wear black and white stripes of Newcastle United in the ring.

Yes!!
If it's for a belt, should just be a regional WBA belt.

Watch now, they make it for the GOLD belt.

Burns is notoriously tough, but really not all that great. The fact that he's a 3 weight World Champion shows how watered down the idea of being a World Champion is these days. I don't think he's ever been Top 5 legitimately in any weight class he's ever competed in.

I couldn't get over LInares fight. Cano is not a puncher and every shot had linares all over the place.

To be fair to hearn if this is the type of main event we are going to start seeing with the new deal he’s on about, it’s acceptable. Decent undercard ( maybe McGregor-farooq) and no one can complain

Wasn't completely unusual though, was third time he's been stopped in under 2. It's only because he came to prominence during the long unbeaten run. He can and has always been able to be stopped

He beats Burns though

Yeah but Taylor ran his mouth about Rangers/Hearts fans - giving all sorts on his Twitter,
He then removed it when someone obviously told him he was a idiot - but damage was done and it was everywhere by then.

Even the card with Inoue had tickets readily available - when you alienate % of fan base in your own country is stupidity.
Yeah but have you ever met a Rangers fan? Ted Bundy's company is more pleasant
Very similar to the bullsh1t comments Taylor made no doubt.

Haven't seen Linares last fight, but I have seen a few fights where he was caught cold before, and he usually bounces back.

When he fought Mitchell I felt Mitchell's best chance was to jump on him early and hurt him before he found his rhythm.

However, Burns doesn't carry the kind of power to hurt Linares, even early in the fight.

Though, I can kinda see a fired up Burns maybe outworking Linares and maybe even climbing off the canvas and grinding it out.

But Linares should be too slick and clever for Burns here. Hope I'm wrong, as I would love to see Ricky get one more good win on his record before he retires.

In his last fight v Cano - his opponent just swamped him with workrate and kept swinging - caught him with a couple of cracking shots and he did look gone at the game. It was fair stoppage - punch resistance wise he didn’t have anything coming back.

Whether he didn’t fight correct fight and keep him at distance and got into slug fest or not - he didn’t have anything coming back to worry Cano.

Bloody hell, Burns just won’t go away. You’d think he’d possibly well outstayed his welcome. But, as with the Crolla fight (a matter of personal taste) I can actually see it being a good battle.

Well that's utter bollocks mate he was a top lightweight without a doubt

Would agree - Burns might be limited in some respects but his heart/desire took him to 3 world titles.

Even now ask anyone in Sims gym - still the fittest guy in the gym - the benchmark for all the rest. He might not have natural talent of some fighters but he put everything into his career he could to be the best he could achieve.

Yh. Wouldn’t even say he over achieved. He achieved what he did because of his hard work.

There were others around that time who could also claim to be top lightweight, but he was certainly amongst the best.
