He really did! The hubris of Eubank to think he could step up to face a battle hardened, natural cruiser like Thompson. I rewatched the whole interview, he comes across as a truly humble and respectful chap, absolutely sure of his own ability yet prepared to give credit to his opponents when due...

Rocky Balboa v Mason Dixon.

After coming out of retirement Balboa pulled out a stunning fight fight against the unbeaten champion. Fair enough it was only an exhibition of sorts over 10 rounds but Balboa was getting stronger as the fight went on. Dixon broke his hand early on in the fight Nd it's possible that had a big impact on how the fight progressed.

Balboa had the champion down early on in the fight and showed ring rust as he could not find the range. Balboa himself tasted the canvass but showed true grit to get up and take the fight to Dixon.

It's quite possible Balboa could have stopped Dixon very late on or if over the extra 2 rounds could have well beaten the champion on points.

Losing to a split decision Balboa received a tremendous reception but showed that age is not always something that should stop you following your dream

Back in the dressing room Balboa said that he had extinguished the demon in the basement and that was definitely his last fight.

Mosley vs Margarito was a great shout. Mosley at his peak was one of my favourite fighters: he inspired me to take up boxing myself. It was also really satisfying seeing the disgusting cheater Margarito get the stuffing beat out of him. It was a real shellacking Mosley handed out.

On a British level and because of the recent thread on him, made me think of Danny Williams beating Scot Gammer who was undefeated at the time. Williams showed up in amazing condition - I really low weight for him and took Gammer out in style when everyone thought he was past it.

He should have retired then and was talking about it.

Yep, you're absolutely right actually.

Not in the same category, but Maske coming back after nearly 10 years out to beat Hill was still a noteworthy achievement. You can justifiably say Hill wasn't the force he was, but he'd still handled the unbeaten Brudov in his last outing prior to the Maske rematch.

She couldn't have stopped a pig in an alleyway, I was so astonished I got a look in I must have nobbed her a good 5 or 6 times in one night, just as well, never got another go!

Is there a better example than Thomas Hearns beating the then unbeaten, future hall of famer Virgil Hill? Hearns had struggled with James Kinchen a few years before, but pulled this result off. Amazing.

Its definitely up there. Hill was a fine fighter, and hearns past his best and fighting at a much higher weight. Great result.

Duran v Barkley for me too, what a performance.

Yes, Duran pulled everything together. Barkley fought a superb fight himself but his aggression inspired Duran to draw on everything from his box of tricks. Barkley had improved so much from his gruelling fights as a contender (flawed but thrilling fights with Amparo, Tinley, Williams, Kinchen f Sims) - but here he looked like a champ, with good variety, compact punching and use of pivots f angles to set up attacks. Duran took monster head and body shots that night and responded with outstanding counters. He just seemed to land the right punches when he needed to - getting Barkley’s respect at the end of round one, with that sneaky right over the slow jab; & the late knockdown, sealing the very narrow victory.

I see Toney v Jirov as an eerily similar fight. Old pro conserving energy and winning on toughness, smarts and superb timing and punch placement.

Gonna say it: Eubank v Thompson 1. As we know Eubank arguably cheated the fans (and himself) many times by just doing enough or - even worst! - what he believed was enough. This gave him the appearance of con man, a trickster who doesn’t really have the goods. Yet, when someone attacked him with genuine spite, when someone dragged him in the deep end, he had the uncanny ability to pull something from nowhere. The great contradiction, never to be resolved during his career (a hugely successful, prolific and high profile one).

I felt Eubank dominated the first 6 rounds including the knockdown. And when Thompson, a heavy punching warrior with amazing recovery, laid on the hurt, Eubank bounced back with inspired attacks to wobble Thompson in the exhausting late stages. Eubank, punching through the exhaustion, with pinpoint counters, continuing in one of the most savage fights seen in the U.K., in spite of horrific eye swelling. IMO Chris won this fight but the defeat did make him more likeable (and Eubank got the decision in many close fights during his prime). For all these reasons and more, this was a really satisfying bookend to a highly decorated career.

Great result for Hearns. At this stage it was good for Hearns not to face an aggressive & physical light heavy. Hearns was able to time Hill very well. The only asterisk against this win is many feel Hill was intimidated and didn’t perform. Nonetheless Hearns boxed the boxer extremely well.

While that was Hearns’ last great result, Tommy was phenomenal knocking out Andrew Maynard on the Holyfield-Bowe 2 undercard. Hearns smashed him with tree knockdowns in one round. Technically this was cruiserweight (180-odd pounds), albeit small for cruiser even with the old limit of 190. Yet, this is the last time the “real” Hearns showed up.
