Scott Quigg vs. Jono Carroll - 7 March 2020

FIGHT RESCHEDULED

Alexander Povetkin v Michael Hunter and Scott Quigg v Jono Carroll have been confirmed by promoter Eddie Hearn as additions to the undercard of the December 7 Andy Ruiz-Anthony Joshua rematch in Saudi Arabia.

Hearn told iFL TV during Wednesday’s media workouts for Saturday’s Regis Prograis-Josh Taylor 140lb unification world title fight that a further three or possibly four fights have still to be announced for the world heavyweight title clash at the purpose built Diriyah Arena on the outskirts of the country’s capital Riyadh.

Speaking to Boxing Scene last week, for an in-depth interview to be published at a later date, one of the undercard’s participants Jono Carroll said “We’re right in the middle of negotiations [with Quigg]. Whether it happens or doesn’t happen, I'm not 100% but please God it does. He’s a really big name. It’d be something I’d be well up for and it’d be an amazing fight. Please God it does happen on the Joshua bill as well because it would be an amazing experience for me. Another mad country to tick off the list. It’d be an experience and a half. I’d definitely be game for it.”

Carroll did himself proud against Farmer, was outclassed but he bit down on the gum shield and got through some sticky moments. Quigg is a different proposition, he certainly hits harder than Farmer and will keep coming when he hurts Jono and get the stoppage.

He’s still a level above Carroll if injuries haven’t taken their toll.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Quigg has passed his sell by date. He took an absolute pasting in his WBO title challenge, I doubt his mother recognised him after the fight.

I think Carrol might nick this. I’ve always liked watching Quigg and he’s been a legitimate world class operator in the past but his fight against Valdez would have added plenty miles to the clock and he’s had a long career now.

Carrol isn’t much of a puncher but he’s very physically strong at Super Feather and unless Quigg can dent him I could see Jono making this a right hard night for Quigg.

Quigg’s by far the higher quality guy but this might be at the wrong weight and the wrong time for him

Quigg may well be on the back end of his career, but he'll have to have dropped a lot to lose this one.

Alexander Povetkin vs Michael Hunter confirmed for AJ bill

Former world champion Scott Quigg also faces Jono Carroll in a super-featherweight showdown, while there is more heavyweight action when the highly-rated Filip Hrgovic meets Eric Molina.

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said: "Three great fights for what is the boxing event of the year!

"The world will stop on December 7 to watch Andy Ruiz Jr versus Anthony Joshua 2 - and now they have more mouthwatering action to whet the appetite.

"Povetkin against Hunter is a brilliant match-up, with both men looking for a crack at a world heavyweight title in 2020. Unbeaten Filip Hrgovic makes his first step up against former world title challenger Eric Molina.

"In a thrilling domestic battle, Scott Quigg takes on Jono Carroll in what will be a high paced all-action war. There's more to come soon on a night that will go down in history."

Adam Smith, Head of Sky Sports Boxing, said: "Anthony Joshua's rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr will capture the attention of the boxing world - and we have an action-packed bill ahead of a massive main event.

"Expect fireworks when Alexander Povetkin is pitted against Michael Hunter, a fearless American contender, while Croatia's Filip Hrgovic will be keen to show why he is considered the dangerman in the top division.

"The exciting duo of Scott Quigg and Jono Carroll should also guarantee a frenetic encounter on a momentous night for AJ as he attempts to regain his world heavyweight titles."

I like this fight, potential to be a good tear up. As long as the Valdez fight hasn’t properly ruined him I reckon Quigg wins handily.

Fomer world champion Scott Quigg has continued his run of bad luck with injuries.

Quigg, 31-years-old, been forced to pull out of his scheduled fight with Jono Carroll in Saudi Arabia next month.

The fight was part of the undercard to the Andy Ruiz vs. Anthony Joshua rematch on December 7.

Quigg announced that a recurring elbow issue forced his hand to walk away from the fight.

“I am extremely disappointed to announce I will not be fighting on December 7 in Saudi Arabia,” Quigg stated.

“My arm needs further time to rehabilitate. I’ve followed the rehabilitation programme and everything was looking great. I went to the specialist at the start of camp and again four weeks later, everything was looking and feeling good.

“In a sparring session last week I felt a rip in my elbow. I have a recurring injury to my left distal tendon, which is going to need four to six weeks of rest.

“Unfortunately it is going to put me back out until the new year. I’m absolutely gutted as I was ready to get back in the ring and lock horns with Jono.

“Hopefully this fight can be rescheduled for next year in the first quarter of the year. I’ll be ready to get back in the ring. Thanks for all the continued support.”

Super-Featherweight contenders Scott Quigg and Jono Carroll will meet in a huge England vs. Ireland clash at Manchester Arena on Saturday March 7, shown live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US.

Former WBA Super-Bantamweight ruler Quigg (35-2-2, 26 KOs) returns to Manchester to pursue his dream of becoming a two-weight World Champion. He made five defences of the WBA crown before losing out to Carl Frampton in a Unification battle at Manchester Arena in 2016.

The Bury man was outpointed by Oscar Valdez in an attempt for the Mexican’s WBO Featherweight World Title at the StubHub Center in Carson in March 2018 but now has his sights set on a World Championship at Super-Featherweight.

‘King Kong’ (17-1-1, 3 KOs) is on the hunt for a second shot at world honours after he returned to action with a win over Eleazer Valenzuela in Mexico following his spirited World Title challenge in Philadelphia in March against IBF Super-Featherweight king Tevin Farmer.

“I’m looking forward to making my return after having 16 months out the ring due to the injury I suffered early last year,” said Quigg. “Unfortunately the injury reoccurred before the Saudi Arabia show but the arm is fully healed now and I’m already in great shape about to start camp.

“This is a fight I’m really excited about. I’m looking forward to getting in there and taking him apart and showing that despite being out the ring for over a year and the injury, there is still a lot left in the tank.

“I’ve got everything fully focussed on March 7 to put in a career best performance! It’s great to be back fighting and headlining at Manchester Arena again and for my supporters to be able to see me back fighting on UK soil. It’s a great platform for me to launch my career forward again and get my name back in the mix for a World Title shot.”

“I haven’t necessarily learned anything extra about Scott Quigg since we were first due to fight, but I have learned more about myself – how much I want this life and what I’m willing to give up in order to accomplish my dreams and goals,” said Carroll.

“I understand I need to be ready all the time and so does my partner, so I was training the day before Christmas and then I jumped on a plane out to America to help Tevin Farmer prepare for his fight the day after Christmas.

“I love Christmas and I just bought my first house in Spain, so it was quite special to wake up in my own home on Christmas morning and appreciate what's around me.

“Now it’s time for the next step. I know my worth as a person and as a boxer. I won’t let Quigg beat me no matter what type of fight it has to be. I’m good at adapting so I will see what he’s good at and then take that away from him.”

Adam Smith, Head of Sky Sports Boxing, said: “It’s brilliant to be back in Manchester as Scott Quigg and Jono Carroll, two all-action fighters, meet in a must-win crossroads clash.

“We’ve followed Scott’s exciting journey to a World Title, while Carroll still believes he can succeed at the highest level following a courageous loss to IBF champion Tevin Farmer.

“It’s going to be another breathless battle between Quigg and Carroll, with more big names to be added to the bill in the coming weeks.”

An announcement on tickets and undercard information will be made next week.

Personally I think Quigg destroys him.

Carroll is brave as they come, but he is made for Quigg.

He comes forward and throws lots of shots, but lacks any real power and will take a bit of a beating if he isn't careful.
