Was a must watch for me in my teens/early 20s! Some cracking domestic heavyweight bouts back in that era.... Always had a soft spot for big Dan :TU:

One thing I envy Danny for, is that he can show up at 20+ stone and still look solid

If he had retired after the loss to Klitschko he would have been a lovely 32-4.

The domestic scene would have been contested by Audley and Skelton, and everyone would have said Williams would smash them both.

He would have retained some of his Tyson Killer mystique and, still being able to think and speak, put himself forward for heavyweight punditry. Anything would surely have been better than what he did to his body and legacy these past 15 years.

This was a good post thanks for making it.

Danny's career was a crazy ride..the loss to Sam was the turning point and sad to see.

Someone has to stop him fighting ASAP

Was it the incompetent Ian John Lewis who allowed him to take a terrible beating in the Klitschko fight..

Inspired by this thread I rewatched the Klitschko fight last night, probably for the first time since watching it live. It was indeed Jay Nady who let it continue far too long (and what the fvck were Williams’ corner thinking?). It was a complete beatdown from start to finish.

Danny was a great fighter with incredible heart. The Kali Meehan KO was insanely good, fresh of surgery following the famous 1 handed Potter fight (where the fvck did he pull that one out from?).

The Tyson fight cracks me up, he won that on grit and guts alone (let's not talk about what Tyson that was)... he fought crazily at point blank range with no jab (Lewis and Buster already demonstrated how to beat Tyson)... Danny got absolutely battered for about 2 rounds then suddenly pulled that out after 2 very odd point deductions

The Konstantin Airich has to be the funniest fight of all time... just watch it...

I recommend watching Williams vs Harry Senior on Youtube if you want a dramatic, old time British heavyweight donnybrook. Senior was a real hard nut with some skills. The fight was on Sky but didn't seem to attract much attention then, perhaps because the Francis loss devalued Williams, and is still sadly obscure.

Danny took a real shelling from tyson before winning, his punch resistance never seemed quite the same.

Did anyone really think he was going to make easy work of Samil Sam? I think Boxing News picked Sam and I certainly did! :geek:

In all fairness, I thought Kali Meehan was going to do him and it lasted 4 fornicating seconds!

What did you base that pick on? Sam's awesome 7th round stoppage of Saleta, who Mavrovic chinned in a round in the 90s? His gelatinous physique? What was it you saw? I'm genuinely curious.

Lots of people round here assumed Williams was going to do him in a few rounds.

He was as hard as nails, a decorated amateur so it wasn't like he was a pile of shit, I knew as soon as soon as he stepped on Danny's shoes and pushed him back that he would stop him inside the distance.

Good fighter, a hard hard man as a heavyweight, fast hands, strong as an ox, could do 12 rounds - any of that incorrect?

Lots of decorated amateurs flop in the pros, so that doesn't mean much. He was a bit of a mystery going into the Williams fight and his physique was atrocious. He hadn't exactly looked murderous versus the chinny Saleta, not that many people over here had seen that fight. I'm not sure even Eurosport broadcast it, I think I had to order it on tape. But everything that you write about him became apparent during and after the Williams fight, so I kick myself for not following you these last 15 years, I could have cleaned up gambling on your picks.

Except it does if he didn't.

World amateur super heavyweight champion and an undefeated EBU heavyweight champion - mystery to you maybe  I knew him and saw him fight loads of times on Eurosport. He also beat Audley Harrison as an amateur - if you read Boxing News to any degree in the 1990's - you knew who Sinan Samil Sam was.
and his physique was atrocious.

You really sound like you have been following heavyweight boxing for five seconds - so what if it was - Tim Witherspoon had an atrocious physique but was successful, so did Tony Tubbs, so did Buster Mathis - his physique has nothing to do with anything....
He hadn't exactly looked murderous versus the chinny Saleta,
You take A fight and put a whole career into context, it's like saying Mike Tyson wasn't destructive in the late 80's because James Tillis went the distance with him when Frank Bruno stopped him in five rounds 18 months later - it is absolutely ridiculous rationale. :shame:

I know more about it than you, yeah. I tell you who would vouch for me on this, James McDonnell - he was around on another forum when I picked Sam vs Williams - he may or may not remember anything from 20 years ago.

And if you read the above, I also picked Kali Meehan to beat Williams - I got that wrong and admit it, so get back in your box you auld woman.

It's good to be reminded of some of Danny's ups and downs when he was a proper fighter. Rather than just feel utter sadness at what he's become and anger at how various European boxing bodies have disgustingly exploited his name while overseeing his inevitable physical and mental decline which will soon see him as nothing more than a vegetable.
