Random things you notice in the boxing community

Post by margaret thatcher »

The idea of luck in boxing is regarded as utterly awful and disrespectful to the boxers

People say losses don't matter and call for better fights, but then they absolutely do dump on guys a lot of the time for losing

More than ever, non boxers have their own fandom, and more than ever people root against fighters just because of who their promoter, manager, or advisor is

Never compare an active fighter to an ATG in any respect. Even if you just mean to draw attention to one similar aspect of their style, like a focus on body punching, you will get met with 'don't even mention them in the same sentence!!'

In boxing these days, even if you are mid 20s, you are still called a baby by a lot of people. I've recently seen people say this with Gervonta Davis for example

The fans turning on fighters for a single loss is one that bugs me quite a bit, as it must discourage promoters from putting Dan favourites in dangerous fights unless the money is unbelievable (which usually it isn't).

Totally agree, very unhealthy mindset for the sport unfortunately. Whereas you look at MMA, and even most top fighters have all sorts of losses, yet the fans still support the fights

I guess part of the problem too is that sometimes a guy does that a tough fight and loses, and instead of getting right back in there with a credible opponent they go right back to the record building and safety of before, hence they don;t gain back credibility

Regularly see fighters clearly losing a fight over the distance, then strongly insisting they thought they won when they know they haven't .

Very rare you see honesty and it's great to see when it happens .

Probably has been mentioned before but I think the community generally is starting to ignore/mute the commentary during bouts - grossly biased and often disrespectful to the fan watching

great post.
I use the example all the time of people saying there has to be better fights and for boxers to take chances then literally after a couple of losses they are finished,How can you call for genuine 50/50 fights and when someone has six fights and loses two they are finished and were never any good anyway its ludicrous. If they really are 50 50 fights then there should be losses half the time.

In the past a few losses on the way to a british title were just part of the learning curve.
Imagine Dennis Andries,Tony Sibson,Lloyd Christie,Alan Minter,Randy Turpin,Tom colllins and so many others if they were wrote after a few early career setbacks.

The whole promoter and adviser thing is basically a wrestling fan type scenario like WWE fans boxing fans now support a brand or like to boo against a bad guy.Boxing hasgone down the route of promoting it self this way so is getting simeler casual fans.

Fighters will always say their hardest fight is a fight that they actually ended up winning. Nevermind the fight where they got outclassed and starched.

They'll say the hardest hitter is also someone they ended up beating. Nevermind the time they got put to sleep by a punch.

 Like Khan’s toughest opponent being Maidana, with no mention of Prescott / Garcia / Canelo etc.

To be fair when you are knocked out you rarely feel a thing, its instant and your unconscious. Getting punched without being knocked out is more painful.

Forum posters making definitive comments about what the outcome of a fight is going to be based on perception of fighters' appearances at weigh-ins, perceived nerves in pre-fight press conference etc.
Rarely proves accurate and yet is repeated ad infinitum. :TU:

The Prescott fight was easy, he slept through most of it.

It pisses me off that a couple of social media f*ckwits (excuse my French, but there isn't another word for them) can earn more money for their "fight " than Loma (hallowed be his name) did for his fight.
And in the same vein, how social media and boxers blathering on it, actually enhances their careers.
Sometimes more than actually fighting someone.
Stuff all that crap!

I think even boxers say that they’re only referring to wins. A fight where they had to go the extra mile to win. His toughest win.

And toughest and best might not be the same person. If Calzaghe said that Lacy was the toughest he fought we'd know what he meant. And it's hard to give full credit if you're wiped out in a round or two, or especially if you're knocked out when you're in front.

Because Loma and Usyk don't have big power everyone appreciates how they break their opponents up. Their opponents then have to admit to being second-best on the night; there's no hiding. I think that's the main reason McCallum was so avoided: not through fear, but the possibility of being outclassed round after round. No ifs, no buts.

Why would you want to think about your losses?
