The sheer guts and resistance Ricky Burns showed against Crawford looks better and better over time

Re: Overrated/underrated performances
also the fact that Crawford didn't really seem to try to step up and stop him, which i would say has to speak to Burns's boxing ability otherwise Crawford just overwhelms people he knows can't box with him
Re: Overrated/underrated performances
I remember at one point thinking that Golovkin was showing signs of severe fatigue and that Alvarez was going to overwhelm him. GGG seemed to be struggling. Then he started boxing, jabbing and moving around Alvarez. Great fight, wrong result.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑05 Mar 2020, 13:39That’s the trouble - the consensus is that Golovkin won both fights in a close but clear manner. The extremely predictable pro-Canelo scorecards left a very sour taste, so his excellent performance does get overlooked.

Re: Overrated/underrated performances
A very underrated performance was Tim Witherspoon vs Frank Bruno - a very hostile atmosphere, he took shots off Bruno that would have knocked down a house and he outlasted him and beat him to the canvas - his shape detracted from the actual performance. I think if Bruno had got Berbick instead - he would have got him out of there (said in hindsight because Berbick was known as a very tough customer in those days...)
Charlie Magri vs Santos Laciar - Laciar was a 1980's flyweight standout and Charlie beat him convincingly on points
Joe Bugner W KO 1 Richard Dunn - when Bugner could turn it on and play Mr Nasty he could get them out in double quick time.
Joe Bugner and his wins in Australia vs David Bey, Greg Page and James Tillis - they were all good fighters and Bugner was past his prime - got him a WBC top ten ranking they did.
Pat Cowdell vs Salvador Sanchez - took an ATG to a split descion in Texas! Three knockdowns in the final round saved Sanchez's arse - amazing result in hindsight.

Hardy Canizales and Fenech Nelson are two fights that sometimes get overlooked because of the emphatic nature of their rematches.
Hamed seems to get a lot of stick just about everywhere you go but he absolutely blitzed a top level performer in Vuyani Bungu and made him look a complete novice. Around that time Espinosa walked through McKinney in two rounds, completely smashed him and effectively killed his career dead.

I was going to mention Hardy-Canizales - I thought Hardy won the first one but like you said - the rematch in the hot sun of Laredo Texas probably exposed it as a bad night for Canizales in Sunderland. Hardy showed tremendous bravery though.orbtastic wrote: ↑06 Mar 2020, 08:39 Hardy Canizales and Fenech Nelson are two fights that sometimes get overlooked because of the emphatic nature of their rematches.

I don't think many americans even know who Danny Williams is. So here it's massively underrated.

Maddening but true.
Re: Overrated/underrated performances
Khan was wobbled late, turned his back & should’ve been stopped.Controversial wrote: ↑06 Mar 2020, 05:29 Amir Khan didn't seem to get a lot of credit for beating Marcus Maidana, which considering Maidana was 29-1 (27 KOS) at the time, went on take the 0 from Broner and give FMM fits it really was a decent win for Khan.
Also, I felt it was a draw.
Re: Overrated/underrated performances
The Cobra beating King Arthur so easily.
He was an absolute monster bearing down on ATG status @ MW and a short-armed small gatekeeper at SMW.
Froch had his part in that - showed how it was done.

Re: Overrated/underrated performances
Yes, perfect performance. As was the beating of Bute, a clinic of how to beat up a southpaw.
Re: Overrated/underrated performances
I was a big fan of his, but Groves' win vs Chudinov for the title a bit over-rated. It was a bit too close than what I was expecting and I think showed (in hinsight) that he was past his prime. I don't think a fight for the vacant WBA Super Middleweight world title, should not have been elevated to "Super World" status and certainly not with the ring magazine belt on the line also.
Re: Overrated/underrated performances
Can I throw Rees vs M'baye into the equation. Great unexpected win.
Re: Overrated/underrated performances
I think Carlos might have nailed it with Cowdell's incredible challenge against an out & out all time great in Sanchez.
I can't think of a more undervalued effort than this one by a British fighter.
I think Tris Dixon could do with interviewing Cowdell and spend an hour on this fight alone !
On a lesser scale, Billy Schwer ripping away the European title against Oscar Garcia Cano in Spain
Billy's career seemed to be on the line that night and was so fired up for his challenge.

Re: Overrated/underrated performances
The most overrated win in my opinion is Lennox vs McCall 2. The shape McCall was on that fight makes the result totally meaningless. Anyone would have beat him that night. It still gets mentioned a lot. Lennox avenged all losses and yada yada
Most underrated to me is Fury vs Wlad. Beating Wlad on hes own game in Germany was fornicating epic. People just don't seem to understand what happened that night and are making all sort of excuses for it. Great win for Fury.

Nobody here thinks Mike ever legitimately lost a fight. His fans are maniacal. I actually don't think Barton gets enough credit for tszyu and kostya doesn't get enough for the Mitchell rematch. Ali/spinks 2 is underrated big-time. Overrated, Jones/Hopkins.

Re: Overrated/underrated performances
Ford put on an even better effort against Sanchez. In Patrick's next fight pedroza completely dismantled him, very underrated performance by eusebio. One more that just popped in my head, he was a vile man but Ayala against Yuri boy was pretty bad assTHEBUTCH wrote: ↑10 Mar 2020, 15:21 I think Carlos might have nailed it with Cowdell's incredible challenge against an out & out all time great in Sanchez.I can't think of a more undervalued effort than this one by a British fighter.
