What good fighters had the goofiest styles. Kinda similar to the more effective than they look, but not quite the same.


I've been watching some Gio Rossi lately, 2x world champ. Man did he look like a goof when he boxed, so herky jerky and slappy but he was pretty successful with it

Good question. So much of unorthodox (or goofy) styles are about head movement and angles.

As far as unorthodox styles, most successful may be Naseem Hamed with the funky angles.

Emmanuel Augustus was also all over the ring throwing punches in a lot of weird ways -- but effective.

A guy who exploited an unusual style -- but still a master boxer -- was Saoul Mamby. Good footwork, clean punches, nice head movement but quirky.

The KO is good but it's pretty crap up until then if i remember correctly mate.

Think about Tszyu's other career loss. It came against Vince Phillips who spent a great deal of that fight, roughing Tszyu up in close, getting inside his power, and pushing him around.

Apparently Tszyu was more comfortable when guys were trying to box and move against him as opposed to get inside and maul him. He needed distance to punch.

I’ve personally known a few athletes go quickly down the tubes when they hit the cocaine. I think Hatton could have been so much better without his alcoholism and cocaine use.

More of footnote really....but the moderately successful British fighter Matt Barney had a deeply peculiar style, it basically involved never, ever taking a step forwards unless "in extremis" and forever skirting the perimeter of the ring.

Horrible fighter to watch, especially as his counter punching was not a thing of beauty or remotely potent.

He was a guy who sort of deliberately wanted to be properly chased all night long and not have a fight.....I think his main strategy was to simply exhaust guys and nab them with just enough clean jabs to pinch rounds.

He was the most passive-aggressive fighter I can recall; must have done miles going from corner-to-corner each fight and the more someone came right at him the happier he was. A little tap whilst sliding away was a major shot for Matt

Davey's record going into the Gavilan fight was 37-0-2 including a win over Carmen Basilio and a KO over Ike Williams.
