Goofiest styles
What good fighters had the goofiest styles. Kinda similar to the more effective than they look, but not quite the same.
I've been watching some Gio Rossi lately, 2x world champ. Man did he look like a goof when he boxed, so herky jerky and slappy but he was pretty successful with it
I always thought Mike Spinks had a touch of goof to the way he moved

Remember Carlos Maussa?
Re: Goofiest styles
Maussa is a good shout. Remember Hatton struggling to figure him out early. Didn't make for great viewing. Remember him hitting Vivian Harris on the deckWee Tommy wrote: ↑04 Jun 2020, 07:30Good shout on both.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑03 Jun 2020, 23:59 What good fighters had the goofiest styles. Re: Goofiest styles
One of the worse! LMFAO!
Re: Goofiest styles
I remember reading about Hatton struggling with Maussa but not having youtube and stuff then I never saw it. Is it worth a watch?

Re: Goofiest styles
Good question. So much of unorthodox (or goofy) styles are about head movement and angles.
As far as unorthodox styles, most successful may be Naseem Hamed with the funky angles.
Emmanuel Augustus was also all over the ring throwing punches in a lot of weird ways -- but effective.
A guy who exploited an unusual style -- but still a master boxer -- was Saoul Mamby. Good footwork, clean punches, nice head movement but quirky.

Hell it was his first title defense after beating Tszyu. He was prime as could be. Maussa was just an awkward guy. Ricky did eventually catch up to him though.
Re: Goofiest styles
Even though he's well liked Emanuel Augustus had a goofy style. Intentionally so.

Re: Goofiest styles
I know but it was the beginning of his slide, he looked terrible in that fight and done everything wrong. He’s hit the booze and the gear massively after Tszyu.
Re: Goofiest styles
I mean if he was so undisciplined that he supposedly started going downhill immediately after becoming Champion, he's lucky he ever became one in the first place.

In a way he represented Tszyu's achilles heel as a fighter.
Think about Tszyu's other career loss. It came against Vince Phillips who spent a great deal of that fight, roughing Tszyu up in close, getting inside his power, and pushing him around.
Apparently Tszyu was more comfortable when guys were trying to box and move against him as opposed to get inside and maul him. He needed distance to punch.
Yeah I think we'd all agree he never has another win particularly close to the Tszyu win, but I don't think it's as simple as he started going downhill immediately after the Tszyu fight.
Now perhaps it was a matter of just everything working in his favor for him to pull out an improbable win in the first place. Tszyu's age, the style matchup, etc.

I’ve personally known a few athletes go quickly down the tubes when they hit the cocaine. I think Hatton could have been so much better without his alcoholism and cocaine use.gilgamesh wrote: ↑06 Jun 2020, 11:25In a way he represented Tszyu's achilles heel as a fighter.

I agree about Tszyu tho
Re: Goofiest styles
More of footnote really....but the moderately successful British fighter Matt Barney had a deeply peculiar style, it basically involved never, ever taking a step forwards unless "in extremis" and forever skirting the perimeter of the ring.
Horrible fighter to watch, especially as his counter punching was not a thing of beauty or remotely potent.
He was a guy who sort of deliberately wanted to be properly chased all night long and not have a fight.....I think his main strategy was to simply exhaust guys and nab them with just enough clean jabs to pinch rounds.
He was the most passive-aggressive fighter I can recall; must have done miles going from corner-to-corner each fight and the more someone came right at him the happier he was. A little tap whilst sliding away was a major shot for Matt
He actually went the distance with Froch for the vacant British SMW title and Froch was thoroughly disgusted with the whole experience.....why won't the guy engage even for a moment or do something-anything?
