He definitely got the benefit of the doubt, but I don't think he had many full out robberies on the cards. A lot of his fights were genuinely very close and I could see how he could get them. He had a knack for stifling opponents despite being totally absent of any serious raw athletic talent. I respect that he did as well as he did with what he had.

The phantom was a great ring moniker for Otkker. He was very slippery and elusive.

He did, however, seem to benefit from some dubious decisions. The Mads Larsen "win" was as bad a decision as I can remember. Far worse than than the Robin Reid decision which wasn't that controversial IMO, although the referee was !

Anthony Mundine seemed to have found the key to beat Otkke, but Sven then pulled out a punch from nowhere and knocked Mundine out cold.

Mundine would've been ahead on the cards had he not 'inadvertantly' put his head in play.

Never really understood why the Germans loved ottke so much.
Probably because he was that rarest of creatures - a successful Germany-based boxer who was actually German

Right. I find it really weird the way german promoters often give there Eastern Europe fighters fake german names. Surely the German fans are not that naive? Maybe they should of called Wladimir Klitschko Helmut Von Schmitt or something
A lot about the way boxing is promoted in Germany is straight out of a bad acid flashback. Rammstein playing their shitty cheese-metal in the ring; ring-card girls that somehow manage to look like they belong on a white-collar show in Plymouth; TV camera angles that make the action look like early PlayStation technical demos; referees that give out warnings to foreign fighters for punching local fighters in the face; promoters who openly brag about buying title wins; and for the very best fighters, apparently non-ironic nicknames from 50s B-movies like "Dr Ironfist"

    I don’t think it’s possible to some up german boxing any better 😂😂😂 They are a weird bunch the krauts. Personally I’m not that keen on them 😂
I tend to view them with a mix of amusement and envy. Envy because they continue to excel at things we used to be good at, such as football and making massive amounts of complex machinery in exchange for money; amusement because, well, see above

I don't know if it was ever a possibility, but Calzaghe never entertained the idea of going over there. Their parallel careers
should have led to a fight but too much risk/reward on show for either? For Joe a judges verdict too dodgy..for
Sven a good chance he would have been sparked out.

Spot on about Starie, very good boxer but no pop and any real controled aggression. I'm no too sure he had the passion for the game either. I think it was just something he was very good at, got himself a nice few quid and and walked away. Good luck to him
I think that could be it. Loads of ability but didn't want it enough. I got impression that he didn't mind so much when he lost where others would be upset or furious.

Perhaps, but having wiped him out in one round first time he probably didn't fear the judges having anything to do with it. Plus he was apparently paid far more than usual to get Viet home advantage.

Never really understood why the Germans loved ottke so much. However flattening Mundine was pretty damn funny given Mundines quite that ottke hit like a girl
He was already something of an amateur celebrity before he turned over. I was in Germany during the 88 Olympics. He got a lot of coverage.

Calzaghe's first fight overseas sez a lot imo. If nothing else, The Calzaghe's weren't mugs at matchmaking so Viet
was a different proposition to Ottke. I don't like having a go at fighter's records but Viet's was the epitome of a padded
ledger, and as dookus says they were rewarded well for going over there. Hells bells, he was probably only the 4th best
German SM at the time.

Veit wasnt as tricky as Ottke but prob still a bit underrated based on how feeble he looked vs Joe

Veit did beat Charles Brewer and took Jurg Braehmer's 0, also beat a few title challengers like Salam and Pedromo, and Mock. So had some recognizable wins at least. He wasn't totally sh!t compared to the lot of title challengers.

There's been plenty of Brits that have done the same mapped out rout so not a dig. Braehmer did
stop him later on. Brewer was getting on, I'd have him levels below Ottke and even under Inkin. He had his level
and Joe had no fear going over there.

Forgot these guys existed.... frank used to really line up bum after bum for Joe at one point.
Joe often made them look like bums, they were all at least European championship quality, I remember the stick he got for fighting Bika

Calzaghe is overrated due to his padded record. Here is a guy who fought garbage and got put down by the likes of Salem and Mitchell. He was very fortunate to get Mitchell back with a lucky shot instead of being taken out himself. He lost the Hopkins fight if you care about counter punching. He beat Kessler, a guy who got outboxed by Carl Froch.
