Anthony Joshua out protesting today. Will the board take action?
Re: Anthony Joshua out protesting today. Will the board take action?
Good luck to Anthony Joshua.
I have no problem with these protests - they arent false or manufactured. They are real. There is a problem with racism in this country and the wider world. Its only when you take certain actions that change will occur.
There have consistently been loads of people at various beaches in past few weeks without any repercussions or strong outrage. Dominic Cummings behaviour and Boris Johnson's impotent response and the list of government minister who backed Cummings undermined the whole lockdown.

The point is not to be missed here, the persons who make the law and the regulations have always been White middle aged/old men despite the evolution and development of the sport and that is what needs to changed. Those decision makers, inspectors and regulators (The Board) should include Ethnic minorities and women and that would be a fair representation of the participants(boxers). Now I have put it in Black and White, deal with it.

He's ok, the guy next to him is covering his mouth.

Some people look at MLK as the end of this inequality rather than green shoots of real change.
Nothing wrong with that. If white people refuse to buy from an Asian-owned shop, encouraging them to rethink and maybe support that person is fine. Likewise, Mickey, if people refuse to hire GRT workers then there's nothing wrong with encouraging them to rethink their position on that.mickey1975 wrote: ↑07 Jun 2020, 03:47In the uncut version he’s encouraging black people to shop in black owned shops and for whites to do the same.
It's only a problem if it's encouragement to use one group exclusively, i.e. stop buying anything from white people. But good luck trying that anyway, when 99% of the things we buy are from rich white men.
C19 creation aside, I'd much rather have China's daily infection rate right now than ours. China does have some serious political problems, but that's taking an outside-in view that doesn't question the US and UK. We've been taught to hate China and Russia for decades, when the reality is that we're all shared victims of propaganda. I know someone in China and it's a harsh government, but they're not the evil monsters the West paint them as. I'd say their worst practice is worker exploitation, with many recruited from countryside poverty to work in factories with anti-suicide nets around them. But then we recruit Romanians on the cheap to work our fields...
The current Tories would bring back workhouses if they could. It's crazy that Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson and Rees-Mogg (whose Somerset Capital is currently earning him millions for nowt) are regarded as 'men of the people'. We live in a culture where working-class men are made to feel like failures if they can't provide for themselves/their families, it's still Boys from the Blackstuff to this day, and the likes of Johnson prey on this macho bullshit to keep us grafting for them.
Corbyn wanted to raise corp tax to a level that would've been lower than it was in Thatcher's day, and he was demonised by all of our media, TV and paper. He listened to the IRA because he wanted peace in Ireland and was branded a terrorist sympathiser, despite always condemning violence, and so on. To vote for Corbyn was seen as unmanly — as something for the snowflakes. Hating these 'woke snowflakes' is what you're supposed to do — what you've been instructed to do, because it divides us. And sure, there are lots of prime tossers on the left as well. But the point is that we shouldn't be living in a culture where some men consider killing themselves (and some do) for losing a job.
We're always saying how losing a fight shouldn't be such a big deal in boxing, but then voting with the idea that all unemployed are scroungers, hence how hard it is to come to terms with unemployment if you've grown accustomed to bashing others for it. We actually argue in favour of a more positive view to boxing losses because we can relate to how likely they'd be for us! We can imagine being in that position so we're much less hard on those fighters, respecting what they *have* done.
They're trying to disallow it with horses and kettling, Peterloo-style, and causing way more tension as a result. I personally agree with social distancing taking precedence over demonstrations, but as a demonstrator you have to get out there when the opportunity arises. If protestors could somehow collectively agree to gather later in the year that'd be grand, but their motivation might've fizzled out by then, and since the US are going hard it's currently the best time to get the attention of those in power.
It won't bring about any change in the short term, it just feels good to throw a few back at the racists in charge, not just in politics but big business. Especially in big business.
Obama was a huge disappointment to many black people, and his popularity dropped throughout his terms. I think in some ways his era was even worse, because you expect a white man to support the status quo.
Mayweather and Jordan were outstanding athletes, who've always been fine as entertainment for white people. Black singers were employed by rich whites in Edwardian times, but never treated as equals for it. Recall how Jesse Owens was hated by Hitler at the same time as the White House refused an invite after he'd won Gold for them.
Oprah's chatshow was the product of corporate white America, who saw the burgeoning profit in appealing to an untapped socially conscious viewership in the '80s. Oprah landed the job because she was articulate and likely the best candidate, but hers is a chatshow that would've been created to capitalise on that emerging market anyway. She's now massively rich, and the whites who gave her that platform even more so, but for all she's talked about over the years, very little's changed. Oprah's presented as a catalyst for change — a decades-long voice for equality, but it's been cemented beyond doubt in recent weeks that the US police are still incredibly racist.
As someone else said (I don't have their name): “If you've 10 bad cops to 1000 good and the latter do nothing, you've 1010 bad cops.”
Apologies for the essay, but let's please try and sympathise with people who've suffered things that most of us haven't, and not just point out that so-and-so was a wrong 'un anyway. Overlooking injustice because we don't care about those it's affected leaves those that we'd care about vulnerable. Unless of course you don't care about any black people, in which case you know what you are and you should confront that for your own and everyone else's good.
There's no we're-better-than-you sentiment in any of this — there's no judgement on my part for any history of racist thinking because if you go back far enough I'd be guilty too. But surely, seeing all this poo going on, we can try and be better people when asked to review our collective history.
Eddie Colston had nothing to do with me, but when I see his statue getting dunked I ain't in nobody's way!
Tell you what, though, I really miss our days of Wilder's armour bants (or indeed Mitchell's cockfeeding). At least we're all united in hating Covid, eh.

Bunch of white people talking about something they have no clue about.

Until the man hands back the money earned in Saudi and rejects sponsorship from corporations with iffy history in regards to their labour, I will not take his voice seriously on any matter regarding human rights

I'm not sure Josh even understands human rights in Saudi or how him fighting there relates to human rights, don't see it yet as him picking and choosing tbh, plus is it better to be concerned about 1 injustice or none at all just so some internet guys cant call you inconsistent?
My biggest thing still is, ffs man, put a mask on at least. One of arum's boxers fighting this week just got it. Being young and fit and having a 10 inch bbc don't mean you wont be covided, dude next to him is yawning or coughing or some sh!t too

Re: Anthony Joshua out protesting today. Will the board take action?
Yeah, I really doubt he understands the Saudi controversy, and it's not like Fastcar's gonna fill him in. But he knows about this because he lives with it. Same as Naz knew a bit about Yemen but nowt else political. It's a credit to boxing that it's given so many troubled young men better lives, but sport shouldn't be anyone's only good option.
As for Corbyn and a united Ireland, I agree with that desire and who in their right mind wouldn't. Did he actually do much? I dunno, honestly, but that he wanted to help is enough for me. Palestine also, where the Israeli government bomb families and then point out the retaliations (who've way, way less firepower) as the bad guys in all of it. It's possible to condemn those terrorists at the same time as understanding and sympathising with what brought about their creation. Strong parallels with BLM.
New Zealand have no cases right now, so it seems like a pretty crappy weapon if all it takes to defeat it is a half-decent government. Unless the Chinese dudes were so clever they knew Johnson'd be hopeless, or they were working together. You need evidence for this sort of chat, bro.
It's a double standard if you're having a pop at BLM protestors but didn't say anything about all those white beachgoers the other week. I've said myself that I wish protestors weren't going out putting us at risk right now, but like I say, I believe this is their best shot at being heard and bringing about change.
This is having a go at minorities for occasionally getting a bit more help to go one rung higher, and remember that only a tiny minority benefit from this tokenism, because tokenism itself is done to placate and create a false image of equality. So we're fighting over the first couple of rungs when the rich feckers are ten up!
So us whites get together and campaign to have a statue of Idi Amin removed, but after decades of writing letters about it it's still there outside the Tesco. Finally we get together and protest, and a white man we wouldn't recognise if not through a sport (one of the hardest at that) stands up, and all he really says is “Yo, let's only buy from each other until we get fairer treatment”.
I don't agree with him either, but thinking about where he's coming from is vital to building bridges, and they're bridges that deserve building. Rich whites have been taking advantage of everyone else for hundreds of years, including plenty of other whites. So if all of us who've been shat on by authority at one time or another get together, we'll have the strongest voice we've ever had.
In 2016 the ONS calculated the top 10% of UK households had 44% of our wealth, while the bottom 50% had 9%. And then along comes old millionaire Johnson and people vote for him to make this better. I'd be voting for independence from this shower if I were Scottish.
Dunno, but they were happy to choke the guy for 9 minutes instead of cuffing him, standing him up, and having two officers hold onto him. They're not cops I'd want looking out for my community. Proving the police are incredibly racist? Well there's loads of footage of them attacking peaceful protestors over the past week. As I said, all it takes is for good cops to do nothing and they're all rotten.

Their numbers could easily be fudged, agreed. But let's take your argument and suppose China created this as a viral weapon, because then we can ask why the UK has (until recently) had a higher daily fatality rate than the rest of Europe? We can also ask why South Korea (I'm guessing they weren't involved in this weapon?) have had fewer deaths in total than we had most days last month? Especially when they were one of the first to be hit.

I wouldn't say most, but more than none, sure. The difference is that Cummings has never suffered because of his colour... he gained his wealth from family connections... he was supposed to be setting an example before any of this kicked off... and it's taken this pandemic for a lot of white people to pay attention to racism. In other words, this is the best opportunity for minority voices to be heard, and the worst time for a man in power (not officially, but he is) to be flouting lockdown when C19 was still in full force.

Or due to the public school? If your daughter's working-class, has good qualifications, and Oxbridge don't want to know, I totally get where you're coming from. But this is the infighting the elites want, when the solution is that both white working-class and BAME people should have a fair shot at top unis.

Aye, let's agree that AJ's out of line on this. But we can also imagine living in a country with our roles reversed, where all the big corporations are owned by greedy, tax-dodging black men, our government's been majority (and entirely until recently) black for centuries, and our predominantly black police need to be filmed in case they abuse us. And even then they still might.

We do need some boxing to chat about again though, right enough! I actually preferred watching Gaethje-Ferguson without a crowd, but I think boxing needs a few fans for atmosphere. Straight out the door if they start on Sweet Caroline, mind.

It's the right forum for it. Even when it goes askew and off on tangents. But it all good. Caught a few fights from the past on youtube over the lockdown. Just so many great fighters and fights that I have seen before but get another take from the original viewing and have a bit more apprecriation.Grilling Machine wrote: ↑08 Jun 2020, 22:34 We do need some boxing to chat about again though, right enough! Watching UFC without a crowd I can now appreciate the physicality when nothing much seems to be happening. It's like how in some old boxing matches you can hear the punches landing, and I think the sport loses that connection with us when the crowds drown out all the fight noise.
All this national anthem bollox as well. “Our boy's gonna beat your boy!” Who the fack cares?! It's not my-dad-could-have-your-dad, is it. UFC has a much better flow.

I would say that most of those UFC guys are physically stronger than most comparable boxers. Different sport. Would same the same for wrestlers. Never been into UFC, just seems a mish mash of disciplines that should be apprecriated but I cant. Like the to and fro when too equally matched opponents meet with a mixture of their style, movement, power and heart.

Their strength stamina's likely higher on average, but maybe not cardio. But it's down to individuals and who really knows. I'm pretty sure Derrick Lewis'd gas in a few boxing rounds, say.
If I trained for UFC I'd do bicep curls because there's a lot more pulling involved, whereas in boxing I think it's generally best to concentrate on your core, shoulders and tris. But then Tyson did curls and they didn't hurt him.

But overall on the whole island the majority would certainly be in favour of it
