Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
Who wins, how and why, both in their prime?

Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
Witherspoon had a clever defence and a good jab which would stand him in good stead against the big punching Shavers.
Shavers had stamina issues.
Witherspoon by late stoppage or points.

Agreed, and Tim had the chin to withstand anything Shavers threw at him.nobleart1978 wrote: ↑25 Jun 2020, 13:51 Witherspoon had a clever defence and a good jab which would stand him in good stead against the big punching Shavers.

Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
Bonecrusher Smith would strongly disagree.
Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
Witherspoon was on the other level in comparison to Shavers. Although Shavers' clean punch could easly provide lights out for Tim. Anyway, Witherspoon had enough skills and power to outbox and KO Shavers. I'd pick Tim to score a KO.
Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
Shavers wasn't that bad. He'd have a fair shot of stopping Tim.

Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
I don't think it's that clear. The Shavers that faced Holmes in the second fight was far better than the one who lost to Lyle.

Terrible Tim by decision or late round stoppage

Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
That was a different Tim.When they fought the first time, Terrible Tim shutout Bonecrusher.
Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
Tim far too much of a cute defense and wins inside 10. Always a chance with shavers but tim a confident pick for me.

Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
Of course, he isn't. But he even had a better overall performance against Holmes in comparison to Shavers.
Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
Holmes was 34 when he faced spoon and 30 (prime) when he met Shavers. In addition, "styles." Can't triangulate sir.
Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
Witherspoon could take a real good shot. Earnie wasn't flooring everybody.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑26 Jun 2020, 16:19You could just as easily say that was a different Smith.
If shavers lands one of his bombs, Witherspoon would be in serious trouble.

Rumors are he lost on purpose..he wanted out of his contract with DK.
Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
Nonsense. He may have been unprepared, as he often wasn't, but he was hurt from the first punch.AntonioMartin wrote: ↑01 Jul 2020, 16:46Rumors are he lost on purpose..he wanted out of his contract with DK.
Smith just rolled over him, similar to what he done to Weaver.

Your right, Shavers wasn't flooring everyone; nobody does. Occasionally he got out boxed, didn't finish the guy off, or was nailed himself before he could nail the other guy.Nile4000 wrote: ↑28 Jun 2020, 21:38Witherspoon could take a real good shot. However, Shavers was a much harder puncher than Smith. Maybe Witherspoon survives if it was a the end of the round or something; Shavers was not a great finisher.
However, if Shavers lands one of his haymakers, Witherspoon would be in big trouble.
Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Tim Witherspoon
I could see Tim in trouble in the right circumstances, like maybe post-Smith. But prime Tim, I think could deal.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑02 Jul 2020, 10:59Your right, Shavers wasn't flooring everyone; nobody does.
