I wonder if being American-Irish like Ward would've helped. Between McGuigan and Frampton it feels like Collins, McCullough and Magee flew under the radar in England. Neary was hyped by Sky.

Collins was a much bigger name than Frampton. My mum and nan probably know Steve Collins and wouldn't have heard of Frampton

Nigel Benn was a whole other level though

Collins by his own admission was passed his best at super middle too. And being floored by an unknown part-time fireman in his final fight must have been a clear signal to call it a day too. The Jones fight would have been a horrible mismatch, and probably Collins knew this but couldn’t resist chancing his arm. He never seemed very close to ever being made as a fight.

The hateful game. It's a good read. Saying post interview I want RJJ, and actually negotiating a fight are two different things. I don't remember there ever being serious talks of RJJ travelling in his career prior tarver Johnson ko's.

We've all read that and those quotes aren't in there. It's written by a journalist nobody.

You might want to check out Dark Trade, in which RJJ says his dream was to fight in London since the day he attended Watson-Benn in 89 and experienced that atmosphere (when NBC had wanted to build a Benn-RJJ fight/rivalry) and calls out the unbeaten Eubank saying he'll fight him anywhere.

How could Benn negotiate a fight when he was contracted to Don King (and RJJ to HBO) and a professional boxer, not a businessman.

You dismiss one book written by journalist by referencing another book written by a journalist....outstanding. At that time RJJ could have fought anyone he liked in the world, anywhere he wanted. He didn't travel and was a notorious homebody. History doesn't lie. When did he fight abroad prior to getting KO'd regularly? He wouldn't even unify vs Darius ffs

Excuse me but Eubank himself said he didn't want that fight when he was champion, as it was a kind of suicide, another Watson 2 or Benn McClellan thing possibly

I think RJJ had scars from Seoul, he'd fight Toney/Eubank but not fight in Germany. And Eubank had scars from Watson 2, he'd fight in Germany but not defend against RJJ/Toney (unless it was maybe his last fight).

But who did Jones need to travel to fight 1993-2003? The US was at the time the home of big time boxing and he was the most feared and respected name in all his divisions. It would have been great if he fought Darius but ultimately his record didn't need it. Darius beat Nicky Piper for a second division title, stayed at home defending against RJ leftovers until losing to a man Jones routed 12-0 with KDs on top.
