The Best Fighter in Rematches

Post by elmersalsa »

The great Azumah Nelson proved that he was a bad mutha when it came to rematches. Who was the best fighter, or name fighters that were the best the second time around?

Joe Louis. He did better the second time against Max Schmeling, Bob Pastor, Abe Simon, Buddy Baer, Billy Conn, Arturo Godoy and Jersey Joe Walcott.

Lennox Lewis always seemed to be better the second time around. He defeated Mccall Rahman and Holyfield.

Lewis looked better than Rahman and McCall, but worse against Holyfield in their rematch.
One guy that did surprisingly well in rematches was Max Baer. Lost to Schaaf, Risko, and Farr the first time; beat them the second time. He did lose twice to Nova at the end of his career.
Ali fought a lot guys multiple times and almost always did better in the rematch.
Holyfield did pretty well in rematches as well.

Tarver had a great start, Dawson the only blemish. But jones, Johnson and Harding was top notch.

Nelson is a good shout...especially going second time round with Fenech in Oz who was pure quality himself.

Patterson came back well (twice) after a right tanking from Johansson...definitely settled that argument.
Joe Louis also properly sorted out Max Schmeling.

Koichi Wajima - was once called by a boxing mag as 'Mr. Rematch'. Performed better in all 5 of his rematches with Tetsuo Hoshino, George Carter, Miguel DeOliviera, Oscar Albarado and Jae-Do Yuh.

Azumah Nelson had:
Mario Martinez
Jeff Fenech
Marcos Villasana
Jesse James Leija
Gabriel Ruelas

Would have he beaten the great Salvador Sanchez in a rematch?

Floyd. Not that many rematches but I’d bet if he fought 5 more he’d have done better in all of them

Fury did better in his 3 rematches, turned 2 decisions (1 often considered a gift to him) and a draw into 3 stoppages, arguably didnt lose a round combined in the redos

I dunno. Some times he did better in the rematches. However, against Ali and Liston, he did worse.

Floyd only had 2 rematches his entire career. I'm leaning towards Carlos Ortiz. He had 9 rematches throughout his career and performed better in 8 of them. The rematch and rubber match with Loi I'm not certain of. Both took place in Loi's stomping grounds of Milan and I've heard some dubious things, but suffice to say Ortiz did not get the decision in either of them. But still, with the level of comp Ortiz was fighting, 8 out of 9 was pretty damn good.

I know, that's why i said 'not that many rematches' but given his ring IQ and ability to adjust within fights, and how well he handled his 2, i'd be happy to bet he'd have got better in every single rematch if he'da had more of 'em :TU:

Oh, Mayweather. :D Well, obviously Mayweather should be credit for fights that never happened. Not Patterson though.

Floyd always gets credit for fights he never had. On a current scene debate Leonard was criticised for not taking fights less dangerous than the ones he did, while Floyd was praised for taking fights long after the opponent had ceased to be dangerous.

Mayweather casts an amazing spell over people.

Best answer! Lost to Lamotta and destroyed him in their final bout, decisioned Zivic , kayoed him in the rematch, also when he was past his best defeated Turpin, Fullmer , Basillio, and Olson in rematches. He finally lost to Paul Pender twice in a row, but was pushing 40 by that time.

Sugar Ray Robinson
Carlos Monzon

Not in their league obviously but Wilfredo Gomez 2-0 in rematches..

And thought he "lost" to Michael Spinks, Larry Holmes was good in rematches too.

Muhammad Ali was something like 8-0
in rematches.
To me, Joe Louis takes the title though...

Depends on how far off his peak Sanchez would be.
