Mike Tyson's fight with Roy Jones Jr has quickly descended into a farce following yesterday's announcement.

The ring legends, who have a combined age of 105, are set to touch gloves in Los Angeles on September 12.

They will fight over eight rounds in what has been termed an exhibition bout.

The fight will be broadcast on pay-per-view and will feature a YouTube star against a former NBA player on the undercard.

But when all is said and done, fans will be asking just what the point was.

Because although Tyson and Jones will not wear headguards, they will be encouraged not to knock each other out.

In fact, if the referee decides one of these faded legends is trying to do just that, he can stop the fight.

And if they do hear the final bell, it will matter not, as there will be no ringside judges to score the contest.

"Tyson and Jones Jr won’t be wearing headgear for the fight," California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster told Boxing Scene.

"They’ll be lacing up 12-ounce gloves and there won’t be any judges present at the fight to score the action.

"So, technically there won’t be a winner unless a knockout somehow occurs or either fighter is deemed unfit to continue.

"They can move around and make some money, but I told them, 'If you get cut, it’s over'."

And Foster also clarified to Sky Sports that the official can step in to stop the fight if they become over-eager.

"In this match, the referee will have the authority to stop the fight if it strays outside the boundaries of a competitive boxing exhibition," he said.

"Mr. Tyson and Mr. Jones Jr will have to submit all CSAC medical tests for fighters over 40 as well as CSAC's emergency regulations that have been put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19."

IF IT WAS REAL FIGHT then I imagine Roy relies too much on reactions and hand speed, and Mike always had incredibly tight technique. At the age they’re both at, there’s a load more variables, but I just think Mike’s style and age will age better.

Having said that, this all seems a bit money money WWE for my tastes.

The only confirmed fight on the undercard is between social media influencer and YouTube sensation Jake Paul and former NBA star Nate Robinson.

I understand that we all need to move with the ever changing times and sport is no different but Boxing is becoming more like a sideshow as the months goes by. How can it be right that top quality boxers at the peak of their careers earn nothing like the money their talents deserve, and yet a couple of youtubers can earn a small fortune when they can't even throw a decent jab?
