Well, let's put it this way.

Gatti is my all time favorite fighter, but he dropped his guard, and looked at the opponent in the middle of a fight, and he got clocked.

Again, I can't fault Mayweather for doing what any man should've, and what I would've done in his shoes.

If you ain't got your guard up. That's your f*cking problem.

"Protect yourself at all times" ain't just a catch phrase. It's the reality of life inside a Boxing ring, and hell in any fight in general. Don't ever take your eyes off of the guy attacking you.
The referee clearly says "stop punching"
Gatti stops
Mayweather hits him twice.
Gatti is like wtf to the ref. The ref starts motioning to break.
Mayweather hits him again.
The referee counts Gatti.

Fair enough, but to take that argument to an extreme degree means there is no such thing as a cheap shot in a boxing ring. Nor outside of it for that matter.

There's definitely a cheap shot outside of it.

If you just walk up to a guy who doesn't have the faintest idea you got a problem with him, and hit him full force. That's a cheap shot, and a sucker punch.

Or hell even if it's a guy you're having a problem with, if you hit him when he's thinking the situation has died down yeah that's a sucker punch.

If you're actually in the middle of trading blows, and for whatever reason you look away from the guy you're trading blows with. You just ain't thinking well.

What about a dude who puts his hand out like he's touching gloves, then hits the other dude as that guy goes to touch?

Yeah that's a cheap move.

However, if one guy is going to touch gloves, and the other guy is all business, and that other guy takes the opportunity to just clock him. That's all well and good.

That's a pretty extreme case.

But actually, someone tried that on me in my 20s in Manchester. I was on my phone. He took a swing at me as I walked past. I blocked it and he nearly fell Infront of a car.

But maybe that isn't a sucker punch, as I knew it was a rough neighbourhood and he looked like a wrong'un. So I was half expecting it.

Maybe if it was a priest as I'm leaving confessional. Yeah, I probably wouldn't have reacted fast enough in that situation.

Yeah I'd think anybody that's about to take a shot at you would at least have an angry look on their face.

If somebody just walked right by you on the street, looking calm as can be, and decided to deck you. Chances are that person is a f*cking psychopath, and will be in Prison in the not too distant future.

I ain't for hitting guys when they're down. Those were definitely cheap shots, and should be penalized, and almost always are.

As for the obey my commands at all times. I don't remember if Earl Morton said "Stop" or if he was warning Floyd about getting on the back of Gatti's neck, but generally if you want guys to "Stop" as the official, you need to be stepping in as you say that.

You don't say "Stop" and just keep your distance from the guys. Because then sh*t like this happens.

I suspect it was either an attempt to steal my phone, or an attempt at "Happy Slapping."

Either way it went wrong for him.

He said "Stop punching" loud enough for the mics to pick it up clearly, but that's fair enough, the fight was a long time ago.

You maybe can't 100% explicitly fault Mayweather, but it was definitely a moment of chicken-ass refereeing. Gatti was basically punished for being the one that obeyed the ref there. That "stop punching" order was never acknowledged by the commentators either, as I recall, though you could hear it plain as day.

Wasn’t the referee standing behind Mayweather?

And shouldn’t Gatti have been experienced enough to have his guard raised in order to “defend himself at all times”?

It was it is.
Floyd takes a 'win by any means necessary' approach, but no one is going to attach the term good sportmanship to him.

The guy's a bit of See You Next Tuesday. But he is a very rich one, with an army of fans.

He's certainly no 'Gentleman Jim', that's for sure. But hey, it's a tough sport and the words 'protect yourself at all times' are an instruction not merely half-assed advice.

Watching Mayweather fight I was surprised at how opponents refused to clobber him when he used to duck down low and expose the back of his head. I'm pretty sure he'd have had no qualms whatsoever about landing the odd loose blow himself if the positions were reversed.

As for the sucker punch against Victor Ortiz, I witnessed something similar when Sean O' Grady came over in October 1980 to fight Jim Watt in Glasgow.

Rather naively, after a clash of heads, 'the Bubblegum Bomber' from Oklahoma started looking over to the ref in a similar fashion after a clash of heads.

O' Grady felt that Watt had deliberately butted him in a fight that Watt was losing whilst defending his WBC lightweight belt.

Watt, in a flash seized his chance and hammered him and the direction of the fight reversed itself in a matter of seconds.

There was considerable controversy afterwards, (there would have been a hell of lot more had it happened the other way round), but Watt prevailed to continue his career until he came up against the excellent Alexis Arguello one year later in London.

I wouldn't even consider myself a fan. I just can't fault him for doing what any man in that position should've done.
You have a fair point to some extent.
Like I kind understand a rush of blood to the head, when you're annoyed, so you give back in kind.

But Floyd is on the list twice, so he clearly has form for it, which makes it look more like a cynical series of punches - I don't think any man in that position would do that, personally.

But one thing I have to acknowledge is that Floyd is a winner at an elite level of a sport. He does whatever it takes.
I have to agree with you.
