Channel 7 Thailand will have it, at the moment it's unclear on international distribution
jujigatame wrote: 04 Oct 2020, 11:36 Is there any reason a Menayothin vs. Freshmart unification doesn't happen in Thailand? I have no idea what the promotional landscape is like over there.
They are both backed by the same financial group. It's in their best interest to keep the guys apart. A unification bout is great if fighters can draw more for unified champion, but in reality having these two guys unify take the teams from being able to get 2 sets of paydays to a single one.

Given both are also backed by CP Freshmart, they would cut their marketing reach from the sport, so won't want them to unify.
Seems like bad news for the division.

Seems like a division they should get rid of (but won’t) when you have four belt-holders and maybe 20 semi-legitimate opponents for them to fight, but that’s long been the case at the weight.

Been a long time since any division had 20 semi legitimate opponents

Although it's TRUE that many Thai's take the name of their gym CP Freshmart is not one of those cases. Instead they have taken the name of a sponsor, CP Freshmart are part of a huge food group in Thailand.

It will ALWAYS BE
Fighter name (For example - Knockout, Petch, Petchmanee) followed by Gym or Sponsor (CP Freshmart, Kokietgym, Sor Rungvisai, Nakornluang).

Typically those following the Thai scene will referee to a fighter by their Fighter name (so instead o Srisaket Sor Rungvisai it will be just be "Srisaket".

"CP Freshmart" is a full "surname" if you want to Westernise like "van Rensburg" or "Van Barneveld".

A fantastic explanation can be found here:
https://www.siamfightmag.com/en/muaytha ... i-fighters (more specifically Muay Thai fighters but the tradition is now well and truly set in professional boxing too)

Just going to add, fighters can (and do) change their gym and sponsors quite regularly, so can get more confusing that it perhaps needs to be. Also first names can be shared, so at one point recently we had two "Petch" and two "Kongfah", we also had "Petch CP Freshmart", "Petchmanee CP Freshmart" and "Apichet Petchmanee" (which I believe is actually his real name)

It’s a supermarket, I believe, that sponsors the fighters and they incorporate into their name

So Thai fans would refer to Moonsri as Menayothin? Or Wanheng?

Wanheng, Wanheng is his fighting name, Menayothin is a gym he fought under

It does kind of feel like a capitalist hellscape, though, taking on a corporation's name like that. A step worse than the ads on the trunks or on some dudes' backs. "I loved it when Roy Amazon beat Bernard Google."
