It's like someone said, he's come up short when stepped up to world class against the 3 P's, but quite capable of brushing aside the domestic standard boxers, although not always impressively.

He's now 26 and could still do something big, but his habitual negativity is a major drawbacks for the fans.

Wach does provide the in between of world class and domestic. It's high time Hughie made a statement on the international scene.

He undoubtedly has the frame and skill set to beat anyone in the division, just hasn't put it together - but can hardly say he's been outclassed in his three loses and those were against 3 of the very best in the division (champions aside) -

Very much an arguable case the Fury did better vs Parker than Whyte - but just didn't get the decision. Yes he lost (close but lost) vs Pulev and Povetkin - but now compare those to the loses to how Chisora and Whyte did vs these fighters - yet these are classed as fringe (Chisora) and geniune (Whyte) world class fighters.

Yes he needs to put it together and develop confidence - will it come, possibly but probably not - but at the same time I think he's been terribly managed (even now) - He should not have faced Povetkin after such a layoff.

He also lost widely to Pulev, maybe won 3 rounds. He didn't handle the cut well and panicked . very generous to call that a close one.

i don't get the leap from losing to pulev, parker, and povetkin to being able to beat everyone in the division. he's failed each time he's stepped into the top 10, and these aren't the absolute best guys either

now, he does have some skill to him, that's for sure, but he needs to commit more offensively and also, for all this talk of how young he is, i've seen 0 improvement or realization of his weaknesses in there. no chance is he beating the top guys with his current air jabbing style

Its more a state of the Heavyweight division - name your top 5 heavyweights - I would be quite surprised if one of his 3 losses are not in it..... At a push for me the worse one of these three guys is - is 5...... Fury, AJ, Usyk, Wilder - at very maximum you could be ahead of say Povetkin now - you cannot make a case for Whyte being ahead of Povetkin now. I guess then whether you count top 5 as "absolute best" is open to more debate. Would even a Usyk or Wilder victory be against the "absolute best" - really there is only 2 "absolute best"

Anyone else think Hughie would be better off training and honing his style at Wincobank ? If you're gonna do the elusive thing, go to the best place to perfect that style.

Hughie might come good in time. Tyson wasn't the boxer he is now for much of his earlier career. He has matured, and fine tuned his skills impressively but in the early days it was a bit messy and scrappy and for such a big lump it appeared he didn't really have much of a punch. Its been great seeing it all come together for him.

I just think with Hughie, his style is between coming forward, and backing off, and its messy. Almost like he can't quite decide what the plan is. Works against lesser opponents but he comes up short against more seasoned and experienced opponents, and what he does, doesn't work against them. The Sheffield artful dodger style would suit him well, he is half way there anyway, so might as well go with it. "Shades of Ali" and all that.

I mean there is an argument. I’m in the camp that thinks Parker would of beat the shit out of Whyte without that head clash, and still very nearly stopped him., where as hughie was never hurt and was close on points.

I wouldent say he did better, because of the result, but I think in a fair no head clash situation he gives Parker a more difficult night than Whyte. Pre head clash Parker was beating Whyte up. The. Had a rough bunch of concussed/hurt rounds then started beating him up again. That’s how I saw it.

Whyte hurt Parker and scored a solid knockdown too, something no one else has done to Parker.

Until the last round Whyte held most of the control and no one really disputed the decision.

The other overriding memory is of Hughie back peddling against Parker and blowing a great opportunity he had delivered to him.

Without the fake KD and with point deduction for Whyte's blatant, consisted fouls I would have scored it 114-113 Parker.

Whyte is the most overrated Hw in recent years, maybe only Lucas Browne tops him in this aspect.

Yeh, his team did try to argue the fake KD and the fact that Whyte was fighting dirty the whole fight as well. They weren’t gonna get far though.

He knocked him out in the one of the final rounds (11th or 12th? I was there so I've never watched it back as I was heavily rooting for Chisora and was pissed off at the end) of a fight he was apparently losing on the cards, despite the point deduction. I think Chisora and Whyte are so evenly matched that they could fight a rematch and Dereck could get it, possibly even by KO. I thought he won the first time around, although I don't have any problem with a draw or the fight going to Whyte by a point. There's nothing between them, really. In fact, I think Whyte's chin might have declined a little: both of his losses have been real devastating highlight reel KO's where he definitely wasn't getting back up again.

Did anybody ever rate Browne highly? He went to points against James Toney's fat little ghost! I think even the Australians knew he was just a big hard bastard but not a boxer. His finest moment was surviving an ancient pregnant Chagaev to win a trinket in Chechnya in a properly entertaining up and down, mad fight with short rounds, that Chechen Tyrant/King bloke in the audience full of gangsters. It was excellent entertainment. But he was always considered a bit rubbish. I don't remember anybody anointing him as any sort of world beater? The Whyte fight was shocking in that people considered it a good win, I suppose? Didn't Dave Allen KO Browne or did I dream that? Yeah, in 3 rounds to Dillian's 6!

I do have to say I’ve changed my mind on this fight. At first I’m like Jesus why in gods name pick Wach. Nobody looks good against him. Fury’s gonna win a UD where he loses 2 or 3 rounds and gets stick for it.

I now feel like Mariusz Wach is the ideal gate keeper who gives these young guys the seasoning they need. Against Kevin Johnson guys like Dubois and Adeleye etc will go the 10 or 12 round distance for the first time with absolutely no pressure on them at all. Against Wach it’s that little step up, in the sense your fighting a guy who’s very likely to take you the distance just like Johnson because he has his survival tricks, but he’s also 6ft7, 260lbs+ and has a degree of offence where you’re going to have to fight 10-12 rounds at pace, not your pace.

Had Daniel Dubois fought Wach instead of the Dutch cruiser weight he would have got criticised for the win and would be told he looked knackered in the end and needed to improve his jab. Those things may have made a slight difference when facing Joyce.

`Just watched these two weigh in. Both look like I did after I'd been on the piss during lockdown 1. Grotesque physiques on the pair of them. Why does Hughie think adding a beer belly means him putting on good weight? The strength and conditioning in the Fury camp has always been terrible.

If Hughie just let it all hang out when stepping up I'd have a better gauge of how good he is, the way he dealt with Sexton and Norrad shows he has aggression in his locker albeit at a much lower level but he cant seem to summon the effort to turn up the heat when falling behind at the level him and Peter think he deserves to fight at

I think a stoppage of Wach would be a pretty good win for a non puncher like Hughie

Hughie just has to keep playing the rankings game and hope he gets a mandatory shot st some point.

Can't see it happening anytime soon though.
