Hide was so powerful for his size. He could have easily done the 13 stone 8lbs cruiserweight limit. If he'd been about in the 14 stone 4lbs days he'd not have been one of the naturally biggest men in the division. I understand why they campaigned at heavyweight and he did well but he was always going to get rag dolled by the real heavyweights.

I agree mate, one of the great "what ifs". Just no money or status at Cruiserweight at that time. I don't think people took it seriously as a division even when (until?) Toney had that great win over Jirov.

Hide was a china chinned , on-top fighter. Could look good against 4th raters or has beens, but flopped terribly against top tier opposition. Haye was a Cruiserweight too, but faired much better against the big boys.

Yep, loved the Eubank snr stories Hearn told. The weekend in Paris funded by Hearn after a good performance was funny, to which Eubank replied "Barry, you gave me a rope and I hung you" !!!

Very few modern uk boxers have truly crossed over. AJ definitely, Fury almost certainly , Haye definitely, Khan probably. Hatton probably. Bellew no way. Even someone like Froch with his megafights and standing in the game I don’t think has truly crossed over.

Hatton indisputably crossed over.

In terms of (for want of a better term) the Sky Era, I'd put Hatton up there with AJ and Fury in terms of crossover.

I imagine as an unscrupulous promoter it’s relatively easy to keep your own counsel when you’ve trousered, probably illegally, several hundred thousand pounds from your boxer. There has been nothing classy about the McGuigans behaviour during this affair.

I would ask Booth for some of the reasons that made him decide to win the ones he won. There are obviously dozens of losses against lads he was better than but that's the journeyman game, not interested in that at all. But why some of those wins?

There would be an endless list of Nobby's ex fighters, spent endless hours in away changing rooms with them, proper characters, obv Pete Buckley, Tony Hanna, Arv Mittoo, Brian Coleman, Howard Clarke, add to that the likes of Nigel Rafferty, Paul Bonson, Tony Booth, Miguel Matthews.

Those boys were journeymen who regularly took on champions in warm up fights, rather than taking on tickets sellers in their debuts.

I asked him why he turned it up a level when he boxed Jamie Warters, who is from my home city. He said he’d never let a York kid beat him in Hull! Then he knocked out Billy Wilson in Doncaster. Think he’s not keen on our lads. Had more wins than Calzaghe!

I went to see a mate of mine in HMP Hull when Tony was there. My mate is a boxing fan and got Boxing News delivered. Tony asked for it after he’d read it. He said he never got a bit of cheek since..... Even screws, one a pro trainer, had respect for him.

Tony also swears he’s never been knocked out. He admits to sitting out the count but never been chinned. And he’s a natural light middleweight.
